texas tech debacle.... *

  • Im interested in what you guys think the problem was......
1: too many 3 and outs
    2: missed field goal
    3: d- line no pressure
    4: secondary getting burnt
5: secondary not lining up in time, confused
    6: all the above

I say obviously 6..... I really think our offense was flat and Those 3 and outs really hurt, esp the 3-4 wideopen dropped passes....

some blame it on other things.... what say you?

  • I know both teams had to deal with the delay and the weather but I firmly believe that OU would have won that game if it had been play earlier in the day and in good weather. We should have won the game anyway. All the things you list above contributed but the missed FG probably kept us from winning in the end.

  • The Tech game just stunk. In the Baylor game and OSU game BV came out blizing the QB, both guys got rocked hard. Then BV backed off and played scared. Weeden got hit by Wort and it drew a flag. The pressure was working.
My point is if your going to get beat then go down fighting, don't play afraid.

  • Brent Venables is "scared?" gee I tend to doubt it. Here was our main problem last year: We couldn't run because our O Line couldn't run block. Secondly- we couldn't stop teams because our DTs had NO push.

If you watch the replay and go to the play chart it tells the story. Crucial passes dropped to kill drives on third down and Broyes fumble on Tech's 30 and Hunnicutts missed field goal after Landry took us 74 yards on a drive that started on our own 4. The drops, fumble, and missed field goal the first half were killersThen in the third quarter Landry rallies us to score 17 points in 13 minutes to pull us to 31-24 after being down 31-7. It was not enough though. If you watch the replay the offense never got any rhythm really. We had about 8 drops that game.

After the season I got a call from a Big 12 assistant (not OU) and he told me Doege was on fire that game and it was easily his best game of the year.

The two best professional rookies in 2010 and both from Oklahoma City,Oklahoma.

  • The WRs dropped several passes of which many would have been a first down. Also missed too many FG's, Definitely missed Whaley & Fleming.

Very embarrassing loss. TT had the most total yards ever against a Stoops' team.. Then TT went on to lose every game.

  • We were too good to lose to Tech. At least we thought that before it happened.

  • Come to think if it, I can't think of having a great feeling about how we were playing in Norman since.... I don't know when.

    Ball State doesn't count.

All of those can be attributed to lack of focus. When the team is focused, you get the RRS beatdown. When it's not focused, you get the TT debacle. It amazes me that people still ponder this in any way.

  • Plenty of reasonable choices here, but the O having such utter failure against a poor defense in that first half, put the D on the field too long, and started a downward emotional spiral.

If the game an extra ten minutes we would have won.

Just too much first half O failures to overcome.

  • I seem to remember some pretty poor coverages, especially Gabe. And Martinez kept putting him back out there. And Venables kept calling for safety blitzes, forcing Gabe into man coverage.

  • Our defense that night was very predictable. I could tell who was covering who on any given play. We didnt give that QB much to think about at all that night. On offense, we kept passing and going 3 and out very quickly. We should have put Millard in the I behind Musil or Rip and pounded the crap out of them. That would have given things time to settle down, but Huepul loves to sling it around and it hurt us in this game and against Baylor.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

This is the first thing i thought of. They just kept targeting Gabe Lynn and he couldn't do anything about it. WHen they finally moved Colvin to CB things started to settle down, but it was too late. What a horrible surreal night that was!

  • What kills me are two things: 1. TT a 29 point underdog and 2. WE PLAYED AT HOME! but lost. Never in history have the coaches and players performed more miserably at home against a team with obviously across the board inferior players.
And I agree with several posters who make the point that offensive play calling has a huge impact on the success of the defense. No one seems to remember the reasons that Barry ran the ball--most importantly, it ran the clock and gave the defense less chance to screw up. BS doesnt seem to care about this sort of clock management and I guess it's okay if you can always outscore your opponent. To me, that is the major area that keeps BS from achieving legendary success. (reference last three regular season games in 2011).
I am not excusing BV--his defenses were prettty bad five of the least seven years, nothing near Oklahoma standards.
Prediction for the Defense: If we run the ball more this year, the defense will be better and Mike will get the credit. If we dont, I predict more shootouts in which we may or may not outscore the opponent.
In the meantime, the TT loss remains unexplainable.
