  • Dad how good are JMills hands? Is he comfortable coming out of the bacfield on those swing passes DM was so great at?

    CypressSooner

  • we don't have AP nor do we have DM, but we do have some talent. I am concerned whether one of them will develop into AP or DM but as a whole, I think our running game will still be very good because talent is good, depth is great, and the oline will improve. I can see where the OP is coming from and feel James may be a little optimistice (but that is one of the things we like best about is consistent positive spins)

J is pretty confident in his hands when he was younger I really wanted him to play receiver and had coached him to play the position until he pretty much convinced me he was a running back. As far as what his hands are like now when talking to Cale a little earlier he said that he has improved a lot so I can only go by that at this point. In high school they really didn't throw the ball that much and made the spread a running formation (which is why I think the coaches liked him). It looks sort of like a spread wing T or something. He's a pretty good zone read RB and a physical back as well. Throw in Clay (hands), Throw in Finch (misdirection), Calhoun can make you miss(Praying for you kid I know you can make it back). I just don't really see the concern yet.

  • Love them all, but I am really pulling for J Miller. He needs a couple of good years with us and then get that big check from the NFL so Dad can spend more time posting.

I can't wait to see Miller and Finch in the back field at the same time. The thing with Finch, they need to get him in space. He doesn't seem patient enough between the tackles.

not that anybody asked me but my personal opinion is this is a "RELOAD" system. I think you see plays designed to enhance the strength of a particular running back. Which throws off opposing defenses and creates this newfound love of RB by committee. JMHO

roflmaoWas wondering where you were soonersrus. What are your thoughts on J. Miller's health going into next season?

I pretty much felt like he was ready this year prior to the season I mean when I saw him in the fall scrimmage he was pretty consistent running the ball and really got those hard yards along with breaking off a couple of long runs. However everyone pretty much knew it would be the Murray show this year and well deserved for a senior with such a wonderful collegiate career. We talked about it after the first game and after 30+ carries it seemed to be the wiser to sit this one out rather than go through another 20 to 50 carry season in meaningless minutes. I personally think he's ready.

A few thoughts on our options:

    1) Finch. I wouldn't consider Finch to be coming off a "major injury". Single fractures rarely have lingering long-term effects. I expect Finch to be 100% in the fall. He's short, but not particularly slight. I'm comfortable with him being one of our feature backs next year.

    2) Miller. If we had chosen to play him this year, then yes, he was coming off a major injury. Instead, we gave him the extra time to heal up and get to 100%. By all accounts, he looks to be full-speed already. At this point, the injury appears to be history. I expect him to see lots of carries in the fall.

    3) Clay. I agree that we haven't seen enough from Clay yet to feel confident in him being one of our main guys next year. We do know that he's a versatile player, which should help him find a home in various schemes.

    4) Williams. RB is one of the few positions where true freshmen can realistically expect to make a meaningful impact. If he's as good as our coaching staff (amongst others) believe, he could easily find himself as our primary featured back by October.

    5) Calhoun. Not a factor for 2011.

All told, I'll readily admit that this will be one of the least-proven backfields we'll have had in a while, but there are four horses to choose from in our stable. If I'm a betting man, my money is on at least one of the four to pan out and have an outstanding season. Frankly, I expect multiple guys on the list above to have great seasons. This doesn't even account for Millard, who is a great change-of-pace weapon toting the rock, and who will continue to improve with his devastating blocks. The O-line returns 4 starters, and should finally start to be a position of strength rather than a liability. There is no reason why we shouldn't field one of the best rushing attacks in the conference in 2011.

Bigger concerns for me would include finding someone to step up alongside Javon Harris at safety (assuming Tony stays where he is), and seeing whether our DTs can sufficiently muscle up to solidify our run defense.

This sums it up for me.

I hope Calhoun can recover to be a true power back. On the other hand, if he doesn't, I think our OL will be much improved in this aspect.

I don't know exactly what Miller's injury was. If it was a bad ACL or MCL I wouldn't expect him to have the burst he did. What I did see of him before that I was very impressed.

I've seen a lot of tape of Brandon Williams. Folks he is a bigger version of Demond Parker IMO, maybe even faster.

I know UT is proud of getting Malcom Brown (I've watched a lot of tape of him also) and they should be, but if I had to pick I'd take Williams everytiime. That kid is electric.

One could compare Brown to Ricky Williams and Brandon Williams to Demond Parker. As I remember one fateful day in the Cotton Bowl, Parker was the best player of the two on the field, and they both had hellascious days.

Yea I think a lot of people are confused about J-Millz injury and I find myself repeating it but there was not ligament damage at all with his injury (knocking on wood) and this is a rough sport any injury is hard on a player. However with the way Willis McGahee recovered I don't knock any player nowadays with today's medicine. For Miller though it was minor cartilage damage and a very small microfracture surgery which in most cases doctors say a player only needs time to heal and he's usually back performing at the same level.

  • As usual I disagree with you Hoodles... Yes Miller will get at least get 50% of the carries and will be excellent IMO. However, when you say Finch didn't do much...he was slowed a bit, but still had a decent ypc Finch will be the shit next year- I think most people agree. With Finch and Miller splitting time and a little Brennan Clay and Millard for good measure- damn I just have trouble being worried!!!!

I'm very glad to hear this. I never knew exactly what the deal was.

Last year I only saw him carry the ball a handful of times but what I did see was very impressive,

I always thought he was underrated in high school a lot of his high school games he was done by half time and his coach pretty much wisely pulled him rather than risk injury. I'd say he would have had ridiculous numbers had he played full games but they were winning by blowout margins and there was no need to keep him playing. I'm definitely excited about his future whatever it may be. I'm a huge football fan. Our whole family is big on football. My oldest son signed with the Eagles early last year before being cut and now will be playing ball in the CFL but I near bout lost my mind this year not watching them play. It was the first year in about 18 years I haven't seen either of them step out on the field and play a game.

I definitely appreciate all the nice things said about J and I'm much like you guys curious to see what he can do when the time comes believe me I'm the toughest critic here but also the biggest fan of his naturally.
