You don't want any coaches fired, trust me.

  • While the timeout was not a good move, coaching has been really good this season. I really like the belldozer and how they came up with it to solve a glaring problem. Our DB play has been much improved the last few years. The change to the run scheme has made a difference. Remember all the penalties the last couple of years? The staff has done a great job getting rid of them. This was the most penalties I think we've had all year. Every team has penalties, but we've been one of the best this year and that's a big change.

I really like Josh as an OC and think he's getting a lot better at calling plays.

Are there problems? Yes. But, the coaches have stepped up the last couple of years and made bold changes.

The biggest problem is the inconsistency of our defense. I think we need to change defensive philosophy. The complicated schemes are hit and miss. We can dominate at times, but at times make mistakes and give up huge plays. The Alabama and LSU types of defense are more simple and use player talent and master of fundamentals. Our team needs to learn how to always wrap up, hit low, drive through the ballcarrier. And they need to learn pursuit angles. If they do that, we won't need as many complicated defenses. Don't allow big plays, play good coverage, be in the right places, and make the tackles. Be consistent in the fundamentals and you won't lose many games, even the ones where your team is just snake-bitten (like vs TT).

    We do that, everything changes.

Remember, we shouldn't even have had a shot because of the players we lost. It's only because of the great depth we have that we could even have a prayer. Injuries have killed us this year. Pure and simple.

Remember, we are just one headcoaching change away from going back to where we were in the 90's. How many coaching changes in the FBS have turned out well? Think about it? Even seemingly sure things! There aren't but a few head coaches that have turned out the level of Bob Stoops.

I have to disagree. OU needs several coaching changes. They consistently get outcoached, but in most cases our superior talent makes up for it. For most fans it takes games like this to realize how bad our coaches are. However, we have had coaching issues for awhile and they aren't getting any better. BV needs to go (several of his game plans this year have been ridiculous, way to much talent on this team to perform the way they have). Need a special teams coach ASAP (no explanation needed). Need a new o-line coach (o-line underperforms every year and OU is just not effective running the ball on a consistent basis).

While you do note several areas where OU has improved, those aren't enough to warrant this staff staying like it is (and I'm not sold on Heupel. He has yet to properly utilize all the weapons we have on offense and at times his play calls remind me too much of Kevin Wilson, and that is not a good thing).I could go on and on about the issues this staff has, but in the end changes need to be made. OU will not win a national championship with this staff.

  • The coaching staff has made some good changes...as you correctly point out. But, our game decisions are definitely questionable last nite.

  • I didn't have a problem with the time out. We should have been able to get the stop. I'm just curious why Javon Harris was left in the game. It got old watching him chasing receivers into the endzone......even on the TD's that got called back, dropped, and slightly overthrown.

Sooner fans should take a step back and realize how spoiled a fan base we truly are.

  • I respectfully disagree with your thoughts on coaching. The Willie Martinez experiment has NOT worked! There are no Sharks in Oklahoma, if you believe this you"ll probably believe in Santa also. We were told Brandon Williams would get 15 carries by this boards reporters, after 2 carries for 12 yards each he was pulled and we seen more of Brennan Clay running out bounds for 1-2 yards. Were still waiting for Trey Millard to get more carries and the list goes on & on. Stoops needs to build a fire under some of these coaches or replace them. Another poster on this board mentions Stoops & Oklahoma are becoming known more for their loses than their wins, and at this time how can you disagree? All of the thoughts mentioned can't be fixed by the players, it has to come from the Coaches.

  • DT's with a bite would make a huge difference in our defense, I love Walker, but no one else has stepped up? Why does coach Shipp keep getting a pass? We need bigger faster DT's that can push!

Because they are hard to find. Shipp is the last person to question or lay blame. Think of Dan Noble out there right now as a Jr. He'd provide a strong Dusty Dvoracek motor. I don't think Shipp can be blamed for McFarland only being serviceable.

  • If several coaches left the only possible negative impact would be on recruiting. New blood and ideas is greatly needed. I read in the paper about a high school coach that was hired as an assistant at Tulsa. A year or two later he is now the offensive play caller at an good ACC school. (Think it is Clemson.)

  • Also disappointed at JH's play calling. Thought he would have a better concept of our offense vs. what the defense is doing. Other teams have great ideas such as a hot receiver vs. the blitz and, when a certain yardage is needed, go past that and then make a cut. OU seems to run the same plays over and over regardless of the down or yardage needed.

  • How did they come up with the belldozer? 4 weeks after fans started talking about it or 4 weeks after local and national media told them to.

Many of you forget the coaches coach these players.

How can it always be the players fault when it's the same problems year after year with different players?

  • So we shouldn't change DCs just his entire defensive philosophy? Yeah I'm sure he can make that adjustment.

Pretty much agree with most of your post ... which worries me. biggrin However, I particularly agree with the part quoted above. This is not anywhere near the same team that went to FSU.

    Huh?

Absolutely! I completely stand behind that statement. Do you remember the pathetic corner play we had in the several years prior? I was beginning to wonder when we'd ever get corners who could cover a receiver. Then we got Brian jackson, Dom Franks, Fleming, Hurst, and Colvin! They are all MUCH better than anyone we've had since 2003!

    Now, safety is another story.

  • Coaching, by definition, is getting the most out of the players on hand, not blaming failure on what you don't have.

You DO realize that in the 103 years of Baylor football they gained the most yards in the history of their program last nite? With all the New Mexico States, La Techs, Rices, Florida a & ms they have played in their 1,000 game history, they choose mighty OU and your "improved secondary" to torch for 616 yards? I won't even mention the 512, 606 and 532 we've allowed to other lesser opponents this year...............

616 yards, and how many were on Harris?

    SoonerNatChamps

  • the players we lost to injury were on offense, we scored more than enough in each loss to win the games, the D is a pure mess and we will not be a champion with the D coaches we now have; book it

    Sevenmm33

  • 616 yards and one 80 yd TD called back, one 70 yd Td that was overthrown with a receiver running wide open and another 70 yd td that was caught, bobbled and dropped. So 616 +220=886 yards. Yes 886 yards it could have been worse.
