  • I have been a member of the OU Insider since its beginning. I have posted very few times over the years but I do enjoy the information this Board provides and I want to take this opportunity to thank Brian, his wife, James and the entire staff for the job they are doing.

I like many others on this Board was really disappointed that we lost last Saturday. I am 83 years of age, attended my first OU football game at the age of 13 in 1942. We lost 0-7 to Nebraska that day. Snorter Luster was the OU coach. That was before McKenzie and then Bud.

I've seen several referrals on here to Kansas and 1975. I remember that game. MY wife and another couple attended the game and afterwards ran into a friend from our hometown (a avid OU fan as were we) but he was so upset because of OUr loss, he would even speak to us (apologized later when he came to his senses.

I mentioned all of the above to say this: First off, I don't think we are giving Tech enough credit for the flawless game they played. When down 24 points we showed our ability by mounting a comeback against a good football team and had a couple of things gone our way, we could have avoided the loss. At least we made a game out of it. Against Kansas in 1975 we scored three points on a field goal in the first quarter. That ended our scoring, no points for three quarters.

To shorten the post, I would say, let us start a new win streak, continue to support the players and coaches, quit some of the negative above board bitching and try to reach as many of our goals as possible.

We have (in my opinion) one of the finest coaching staffs in the country. Many, many programs would like to have what we have. You don't have to go through many years of Gomer, Snelly and Blake to really appreciate Bud, Barry and Bob.

I really appreciate this Board. We have many good posters. I want to thank each of you for participating as it gives this old codger much enjoyment. I also enjoy some of the new staff, like J. R., Dave, and Mike. And if I left out a staff member it was unintentional. Thanks for hearing me out . . . those that did.

  • My Father is 93. He attended that Kansas game and still talks about it...and did so again this week-end. We have been fortunate enough to go to many games from coast to coast. The game he had the best time at was at the Orange Bowl Game which led to us winning the 1985 National Championship game. Now due to poor health, Dad watches them on TV. Sometimes he just makes it through the first half of the night games...then wakes me up in the middle of the night to find out what the score was.

Fortunately, we have had many many more happy endings during the past 49 years of being Sooner fans than sad ones.

  • I recall the '75 Kansas game clearly. My season tickets were in the North end zone but a close friend could not attend and gave me his tickets on the 45 yard line. I was really excited--for a while anyway. I seem to recall that Steve Davis etal fumbled some 4 or 5 times in that game.

I also 'survived' the Game of the Century but from my North end zone seats.

I made it through 15 straight RR Shootouts from '72 --attending with the same group of folks--some were even Texas Longhorns, Aggies and a few Tech people. During that period I witnessed some great wins as well as some disappointing loses. But no one carried any animosity at the game results after the final whistle. We never would have survived 1 year, much less 15 if we had not been able to handle a loss or win with dignity, grace and good sportsmanship.

Of course we never seemed to spend any energy trying to tell the rest of the world how to coach or play football for OU.

Maybe ignorance is bliss, because I enjoyed every second of it, win or lose.

Now? Even after a win there seems to be a large amount of complaining, nitpicking, advising and criticizing thrown at the coaches and players from all directions: the media, fans, and of course much of it appears in posts on this board.

While I am apparently no longer ignorant, having the insight of so many genius unemployed coaches on this site, I am also no longer as blissful about a win, much less a loss.

  • Great post indeed. If football games were all won by the favored or higher ranked team then there would be no need to play after the first poll of the season. We are being exceptionally arrogant I think...OU played without what - 8 starters or so - Saturday night...that is a load to overcome and we could not pull it off. Credit to Tech for winning. Sooners have a chance now to make amends in a very tough environment in Manhattan, let's hope that is the case. Boomer.

Great post. Just as in another thread we talk about players entitled, I strongly believe quite a few fans are entitled as well.

  • Ah, the wisdom of a bit of age. Sage advice. We all can gain by the application of your wisdom sir. I have read the tweets of many of our players. In the face of outrageous criticism they remain calm, adult and show wisdom beyond their years. Their maturity should make many ashamed.

  • I had my wife to be at that Kansas game (now married 36+ years). We were supposed to spend the night in OKC, but we left the game early and drove back to Missouri. She said I did not say one word all the way back home - all I remember is the 8 straight turnovers. However, we did win a National Championship that year. I was also at the TCU game in 2005 when we last lost at Owen Field. That being said, I have been to many more games that we won than ones that we lost. My favorite game to attend was at Missouri when 'Little Joe' put on his show at the end of the game. It is great to be a Sooner, don't let anyone forget that!

  • An excellent thread. As another aging Baby Boomer Sooner, I can attest that with age comes perspective. I was at that Kansas game and came away in shock. I had not seen us treated so rudely on our own turf in the Barry Switzer era.

The following week I was in Columbia for the Joe Washington miracle and comeback one-point win. It was a gut wrenching stretch in a season that saw us ultimately go on to win another national championship.

I used to get so emotionally invested in OU football I'd be hard to live with for days after a loss. These days I still hate losses, still yell myself hoarse at games, and scream at the tv to the point where the dog leaves for the safety of the backyard. The week prior to the opening of OU's football season is far and away the most eagerly anticipated week of every year. Nothing else comes close.

But I have become more philosophical. It's a game, played by kids, and there are many things in this world far more important than their outcomes. The highs are just as high as ever. The lows, less so.

  • Way back use to have hall of fame post section for great posts. This would belong at that section. A person with years of wisdom who doesn't type crazy posts in moments of frustration like 95% of posts I have seen this week!
