Why so much editing of posts? *

  • Whenever I read a recruiting report or anything posted by the administration, I come back later and see that the post has been edited by James Hale or Dave Hunt or whoever, sometimes as many as three times. Thus, the topic turns to red again and I find I'm reading the same thing. Why is this done?

It seems like this was 3XT's real concern. I did the same thing with the Durron Neal article today. I knew I read it, but it was edited by James and the headline on the board turned red, as if I hadn't read it. It wasn't a big deal and there was no * since James hadn't added any comments, but it was confusing at first since I was trying to figure out if it was a new/different article on Neal.

    That was exactly my point!

Fair enough - more of a technical issue you have than the fact James is editing posts. That said, the title of the thread is "Why so much editing of posts?" instead of "Why do threads show unread after edits?", so I can understand some of the responses. Anyhow, given that there is still no option to bold/italic/etc here despite requests over the past year, I'd expect little to change on the technical aspect of the board.

  • Those that are edited are often very good news and exciting....you should be excited to read good news many times....that is if you can't realize and remember what you have read........this message will not be edited!

  • This is the fake outrage Bill Maher and John Stewert have been railing against the last few weeks.

I'd imagine the OUI staff preform edits for the same reason most other people perform edits.

Come on......am I the only one to think the final line on this post is the funniest part!

“Any people anywhere........have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better.”

IMO, James needs to edit again just for shits and giggles.......

  • Here's the way the site works, (and has for the last 12 years).

The front page is the 'real' face of OUInsider. But, in order to publish a story there, we need photos, and editing, etc. This is not a newspaper with daily deadline, and unlike TV, we don't wait until 6:00 to report the news either.

News is real time, it can break at any minute. You don't want to wait several hours to find something out.

So, James and other REPORTERS posts stories FIRST to the message boards. These are often unedited, (and yes, we know, they usually contain punctuation and spelling errors, because time is of the essence). This system allows our VIP members to get news ASAP.

Our EDITORS then take these message board posts, edit them, get a photo, write a headline, and publish on the front page, sometimes an hour or more after they first appeared on the message boards.

But, sure, we know we threw the story up on the message boards, and when we have time we do try to go back and edit the obvious errors.

Now, as to why it reads 'unread' -- I agree, it shouldn't, but that's a 247 issue as we don't program the site, and have little say in how things work on the back-end. I suggest you e-Mail 247 about issues like this, if it's important to you.

If enough people ask them to change something, they most likely will.
