Whoa -- Pig – Sooooie . . . (from BeanBag)

  • Note from OUInsider: BeanBag - 'Special Correspondent' to OUInsider and a newspaper sports journalist, has been laying low for over a year. However the news out of Fayetteville was too much for BeanBag to pass up, and he sent us his take on the situation.

    Special to OUInsider

Sometimes the biggest news happens away from home.

Seems that nothing can stink more than a pig pen, and controversial head hawg Bobby Petrino might have too much slop on his face to escape the latest soap opera from Fayetteville.

Just when memories of Houston Nutt and exiled quarterback Mitch Mustain were beginning to fade, Petrino, riding a motorcycle last Sunday, missed a curve and landed in a bigger mess than Nutt ever had with Fort Smith television news reporter, Donna Bragg.

The slop hit the fan Thursday when a police report of the accident surfaced and contained information that another UA athletic department employee, 25 year old Jessica Dorrell, who was just hired to work under Petrino in the Razorback football office, was a passenger on Petrino’s ‘crotch rocket.’

Two weeks ago Petrino hired Dorrell as the student-athlete development coordinator, and as recruiting coordinator.

In a rather humorous press conference following the accident, Petrino appeared with a neck brace and facial abrasions and initially tried to cover up the fact that Miss Dorrell had gone airborne along with him after failing to negotiate a curve on a country road 22 miles from campus last weekend.

Arkansas AD Jeff Long, when learning of the details and Miss Dorrell’s somewhat embarrassing presence at the accident scene, responded by placing the 51 year old coach on administrative leave on Thursday night.

Petrino responded with a plea begging for job:

"I will fully cooperate with the university throughout this process and my hope is to repair my relationships with my family, my athletic director, the Razorback Nation and remain the head coach of the Razorbacks," Petrino said in a statement issued by the university.

This latest scandal put Petrino squarely in the cross hairs of some influential UA insiders have been torn in their loyalty toward him. Much like Mike Leach’s tenure at Texas Tech, Petrino has his detractors who have been waiting for an excuse to can a coach who has brought success and some degree of respect to the program, despite his reputation for being a certified jerk that has been disseminated by several former coaching colleagues, and players, most recently with the NFL Atlanta Falcons.

The episode undoubtedly will give those boosters the golden opportunity that they have been waiting for.

The most amazing piece of information to tumble out of the wreckage was that Petrino was not wearing a helmet while on the evening pleasure ride. It would only make sense that the most recognizable celebrity in Northwest Arkansas would at least put on a Hog Hat to avoid recognition when joy-riding with an attractive female other than his wife.

  • Arkansas fans -- please don't jump on me for this one, or ask me any questions about it. You probably know far more than I do here.

BeanBag could not figure out how to log on and post and sent me this to post for him. Save all of your responses for him, I need to return to editing the Weekend Wrap-Up.

    Thanks

  • I think that this is an issue between the Chief Hog and his wife. He better hope she doesn't fire him ...mspacman. That will cost him a lot more than what Arky could do to him... swirl

  • wilsonIII said...I think that this is an issue between the Chief Hog and his wife.

Agree that it SHOULD be between he and he wife. But Petrinos' contract, like that of almost every HC, has a morals clause. I believe it generally gives the institution an 'cause' if they decide to terminate.

I do not know anything about UA, and it's boosters as BeanBag reports. But I do know that he does have contacts at UA and I would think that there is reason for Petrino to be concerned here, IF these boosters do indeed have enough influence.

In my opinion, it all boils down to prestige vs embarrassment. Is (winning due to) Petrino a bigger asset to prestige, than he is an embarrassment?

That, I certainly don't know, and frankly don't care, except for the fact that Arkansas and OU are becoming more intense rivals in recruitment, and OU does have a couple of Arkansas kids at or near the top of their charts, (ex TE Hunter Henry, Little Rock, Pulaski Academy.)

  • The operative phrase is "who was just hired to work under him". Additionally what caught my eye was that Petrino was not even wearing protection, i.e. riding helmetless.

  • Its all in good humor. In college athletics you have to take your public lumps, and OU has certainly taken its share over the years and I'm sure many Hogs have dished it out...its their turn to take it.

That's what Ms. Dorrel said too: "It's MY turn to take it!" Well at least Ms Dorrell was 6 years older than Monica Lewinski when Slick Willie was diddling her.

  • Petrino's crotch rocket. Yikes! Petrino might not be able to exercise that bike for a while.

I do feel terrible for the girl's fiance. Guy didn't ask for his face to get splattered on the web; but dang it, his girl was unfaithful with the UA Head Football Coach and we live in the age of the internet.

  • Supposedly it was not his first indiscretion rodeo. I would suspect the Hawgs greed will win out on this and he'll remain head pig, appropriately!

  • Canyoneer is livid about this kind of behavior for several reasons. One, the administration at Arkansas KNEW what issues of character they had when they hired him, but did it anyway 2) Anyone who works as faculty or in a college environment has to be expressively cognizant about the issues there. There are temptations that are always there, and it is imperative that anyone hiring and anyone working in that environment understand that, and be willing to stay away from any type of entanglement that is shady. You really have to set a higher standard there, or there could be serious consequences that go far beyond you.

And that is what has apparently happened here.

VN, it's HARD not to notice that phrase.

Such a fun conversation, especaily since a likable guy like Petrino is on the Hot Seat. Although unlikely, this could have been completely innocent. They sure didn't do themselves any favors trying to keep her a secret.

Next, between this girl and the girl that was sexual harrassed at Texas, clearly these other schools tend to hire attractive women to work in the athletics office. Are we keeping up?

Finally, when did we come up with a correspondent named Bean Bag... Cool Name. How does a guy get named Bean Bag?? I would like to see more reports from this guy. In fact, he sounds like the kind of guy we would all like to party with. Maybe we should have a Bean Bag social event, with cocktails and ribs, and we could invite Dorrell as the featured speaker.

Nope. I live here in Fayetteville too, and don't have any inclination to cheat on my girl. I am amused at the hog fans over here that are more than willing to let this one slide though. I always knew winning solves a lot of problems, but never thought it would cause folks to lower their moral standards.

BeanBag has written many articles for OUInsider.

He was (is?) a beat writer assigned to OSU, and used to write during the Bob Simmons, Les Miles, Terry Don Phillips eras, but when Gundy came aboard said he wanted to lay off the satire and give Mike a break for two reasons:

    1) He liked Mike, and wanted him to do well, and

    2) Mike was Cales' brother and BeanBag did not want to be disrespectful of their relationship.

BeanBag was the first to expose the T Boone financial deal, (i.e. mess), at OSU, later picked up by the NY Times. He did so right here on OUInsider. He always write with a satirical slant, (and perhaps some hidden humor).

As to where the name 'BeanBag' came from, I don't know. Obviously it's not his real name.

Speaking of the TBoone financial mess, there was an article in the Thursday Tulsa World entitled "Where has OSU's money gone?" or something to that effect. Talked about how OSU's athletic village had yet to take off, and was in fact behind schedule on every facility so promised.

What is the current balance in the TBoone fund for OSU? The article alluded to the fact that the fund was drained after the football renovations were completed, but I didn't find anything concrete concerning the actual numbers.

Does anyone know? And if we don't know, how in the world can that be? They're a public institution, after all.

  • Yeah I can remember when every one up at oSu were going crazy trying to figure out just who beanbag was. Because he would write things that supposely only a few people would know, I remember setting here laughing my butt off over what he had to say, and how the pukes were reacting to it all.

  • She is hot and things happen. I will not cast stones...it could happen to the best of us. It is certainly disappointing to hear and especially because he is supposed to be a leader of men..but as we know, it has happened to many other men in the past and will happen to many more in the future.

I will withhold judgment and am not sure if there is a "fireable" offense. This is a delicate situation.

  • I read an article right on another news site, and one of the main issues here is the fact that Petrino lied to the police and to UA's administration about being alone when the accident occurred. Also, I believe that Petrino broke some UA rules about the way and reason the women, who is/was engaged, in question was hired within the football department and also when their affair actually started.

What he and another consenting adult does is none of my business. And, I think that is how most of the Arkie fan base see it. I work with some hog fans and that's their attitude about the situation.

    JetDoc

  • I'm thinking that this is a sexual harassment lawsuit waiting to happen. Coupled with the fact that now Arkansas doesn't have a head coach that can sit in the living room of potential recruits and expect any credibility. This along with the lies and his history(which indicates there'll be more incidents), I don't see where Arkansas has any choice but to cut bait here. If they don't and something else were to happen, they'd look even more foolish.

If he had not lied to the UA's administration it may have been a little better for him. But, UA knew they were getting a liar when they hired him.

One article I read on the situation, not sure if this was it, stated they still owed money on TBS (stadium) and GIA (arena). It's just amazing that the local media and state government hasn't had a cow over this! All the articles just basically go along Boone Pickens Junior (Holder) and say we'll 'that's just too bad for osu' and 'T Bone will take care of this eventually'. Amazing circus!!!
