What are the keys to a 7th Big 12 Championship

  • Some thoughts on keys for an OU win this Saturday
1 - Stop the run - Will OU mimic what TX and A&M did vs. NB? Do we see a 4-3 formation similar to what OU did vs. Stanford?
2 - No first half mistake by Landry. This will be a good opportunity for Landry to redeem his performance last year vs. NB.
3 - Broyles has to out play Prince at least 70% of the time
4 - Utilize the TE in the passing game
5 - DTs must step up vs. the NB OL. Will Noble play??? OU could use the depth.
6 - Offense and defense should remain aggressive throughout the entire game. Conservative play calling could limit OU's overall success
7 - NB has a great kicking game, OU must at least try to match what NB does in the kicking game

    Now its your turn.

  • I think the only key to be concerned with is attitude. The past two games OU has played with an attitude of proving that they are a good football team. Nebraska is wanting to win this game very much, given the way last year's championship game with Texas ended and this being their final game as a member of the Big XII. Further, being the underdog is another incentive for Nebraska.

If OU plays like it did against Missouri and Texas A&M it will be a long night for sooner fans. In those two games the team appeared to be intimidated at times, and poor decisions from the coaches down to the players contributed to the losses.

Hopefully James Hale will provide us with some insight on the attitude of the team as the week goes on. But to hear that the team had good practices is not what I want to hear. But the kind of comments we heard towards the end of the past two weeks how the coaches and players were upset with the perception that this team cannot win on the road and that OSU was a better team. Hopefully they have not lost this attitude after two successful weeks.

  • I like our skill guys much better than theirs. The key will be matching up in the trenches. If we can spend as much (or more) time in their backfield than they spend in ours, we could (should, even) blow them out of the water. However, if they're in our backfield all night, the offense will sputter, and if we're not getting licks on their ball carriers until the second level, they'll score enough to beat us.

  • No 5 picks and no happy feet and OU wins going away....

  • 1) Strong defense. Nebraska will be pretty one dimensional if Martinez can't play or is ineffective. OU needs to be very physical on that side of the ball and tackle well.
    2) Special Teams-DO NOT give up anything cheap. It cost us in 2 losses and almost cost us in a 3rd.
    3) OU has to be able to run the ball. This might be the most important key to the game IMHO. That will open up the passing game which is necessary because.....
    4) Nebraska has a very strong secondary. OU receivers likely will have trouble getting separation.
    5) No bonehead plays by Landry. Nebraska will be the best defense the Sooners have played and it is very important to be "clean" on offense.

Should be a good game as I see neither team capable of dominating the other. Probably a score in the 20's by both.

  • Offense
    1) patience...because Neb has such a good secondary, Wilson, Josh, LJ and the WR's will need to be patient. If it is not there, throw it away. This will put more pressure on our D to keep it close but it will allow us to not have a 5 INT meltdown again. Take what the D gives and No TO's.

    Defense
    2) tackling and patience on D. Don't overcommit trying to be a hero, stay with your assignment and tackle. NEB will get chunks of yards and attempt to exhaust us...they will be successful most of the time. We must maintain patience and not give up the big play, despite long tough pounding drives. Bend but dont' break mentality. Red zone D will need to keep them to FG's.

    3) X factor - hanna, kenney, millard, rat. Like OSU, Broyles, Stills, and Franks will be blanketed by their best cover corners. But their 3rd DB + or LB will be the key to exploit. We will need be games from unlikely heroes similar to last game, especially since Murray will undoubtedly be hampered if he is able to play at all. .

Agree. I expect their corners to play up close, jam our receivers, and keep the horizontal passes from being very effective. They will throw the book at LJ to keep him off balance.

  • Agree with SKIP. I think the key = OL protecting LJ. 2 ways to help that = quick tempo wearing out the DL + running the ball. Saturday's pass/run ratio (nearly 4 - 1) shows we win in the air. With limited mobility, LJ needs a lot of help here. Give him time - he'll get it done. Bring pressure - where he has trouble.
Hope DM is completely ready to play. He's huge in so many ways. We'll really him next year.
OSU game has to be one of those "We told you so" games for the coaches. "Don't quit. Keep practicing & working - you''ll probably still get your chances!" Looked like Madu was buried on the depth chart - but guess who's playing @ with all the marbles on the line? Looked like Kinney was done - but look who makes some of the biggest catches of the game? I wonder if coaches will motivate RJ Washington with these examples. Based on his recruiting hype he should be able to eventually contribute, too.

  • The key, IMO, is our receivers vs their secondary. Neb is very physical and our receivers will have to fight on their routes all night. If you remenber, last year they bumped us off routes and made interceptions, including a pick returned to the 3 yard line.

  • Nebraska will play man the entire game. Nebraska is really good against the pass. They probably won't respect us deep at all b/c Landry has not yet developed the ability to throw a good deep ball.

Our ability to run the ball and find mismatches with their LBs or nickel back will be huge. Murray, if healthy, will be the key to the game for us. He can get tough yards and could catch 10-15 balls against the D Neb. will likely play.

  • I think the key pretty much is on the o-line -- protecting Landry and giving him time, and run blocking -- can we have a running game with or without Murray. They need to take control of the line of scrimmage, and play with aggressiveness.

On D, again, the line will be most important -- can they control the line of scrimmage, get penetration, stop their running game and put pressure on their quarterback. If Martinez does play they will have to contain him. Our linebackers will also have to be careful not to over-run the play, and to cover the short middle of the field.

If we do these things and limit any turnovers offensively I think we will have a great chance to win.
