What I do not want to hear for this upcoming season.....

  • I know I will probably get flamed a bit, possibly down voted..Most here know that I am a very positive poster so maybe knowing that, I will get the benefit of the doubt..With that being said, here are 3-5 things I do not want to hear from the coaches about this coming season..

1: Millard will see more time....at the running back position...Really? This is what we heard all last year. Even after some games when he did pretty good, We were led to believe that Millard will get more carries and see more playing time running the ball. It hardly ever happened. I hate reading about what the coaches say they are going to do and then never do it...So forgive me is I am not a believer in what they say.........

2: Our off line will be more touger than last year. Every spring we hear this and every football season we always ask what the heck is going on. With all the experience coming back, and the depth we have, I do think they will execute better but for me, actions speak louder than words and we will find out how tough they will be soone enough. I hope they get tough and they can push the d line a bit so we may get past the first line of defense and give our running backs a chance to shake and bake and take it the distance...we shall see, but for now, no talking about it. No hyping them up and getting us excited for us to just get let down....

3: Our tightends will be used more....After the osu game 2 years ago, all we heard was how hannah was going to have a great great season last year. How our tightends were going to be a major focal point in our offense and how they will be utilized big time..Game after game, we all wondered where the ehck are our tightends at? Hardly any plays for them, like the paul thompson to grissom plays...no roll out with a tight end drag, just hardly nothing...Yes they ran some pass patterns and on occasion, Landry found them but they were never the focal point of our offense..Yes I understand we had recievers and Broyles, ect....But the tightend was supposed to be a foacl point last year...remember?

4 Since we have Mike back, I am going to give the defense a pass this year..I know Mike has a scheme that will be less confusing, for our defense. I know they will be able to line up correctly and know their duties...Will be there break downs, sure..Every team has break downs..We just need to get back to the basics and tackle better, cause some havoc with our d line and everything else should fall into place. I know we have the personel to have a great defense this year. It is just about putting the right people in the right places and for the coaches to keep the confusion to a minimum..Keep it simple for the players as much as possible

5: I hope to God that Landry isnt focused on a Hiesman or the coaches..I hope to God that our backup quarerbacks get plenty of time this year...They are going to need the experience for the upcoming season after Landry is done..I

I do not mind reading how our team is improving..I am sure they are, in some ways you cant get much worse, right, lol? I know some will get a bit faster, a lot more stronger but I want them to improve on fundamentals...basics...tackle better, catch the ball, dont fumble, dont lose containment, dont fall for the play action, and most important do not give up the big play, rather it be on defense or on special teams...

6: Speaking of special teams, please give neal, woods, shepard, danzell, and our other speedster/ playmakers a chance to succeed...Franks is not the answer nor is stills..let them focus on catching the ball along with metoyer and reynolds...

I do believe that honnicutt is the real deal and will give us a huge boost this year along with way..

overall, I just want to come into this season with an open mind and not high expectations..I believe we have the talent to win a lot of games but I also know that if we do not improve on the fundamentals, we will have some let downs and probably lose a game or 2 that we should have won...I love Oklahoma football and I am ready for this upcoming season....any thoughts?

Also, I believe our coaches both on offense and esp on defense lost the games for us..Piss poor play calling at times and our defense was so confused all the time, the schemes were too hard for them and way too complex..Even a former player said that Oklahoma scheme wise was harder and more complex than the denver bronchos...Lets be more creative on offense but if things are working, lets not change it..Just stay with what is working..Yes we had some major breakdowns on defense, but schemes hurt us bad, players just did not know where they were going and our so called sharks were fishbait to the whales....We looked like minnows out there at times.....So come on coaches, do not throw your players under the bus, sometimes it is your faut and yes Bob is always good at saying he gets outcoached, but I am sick of hearing how they get outcoached..Maybe they should have an offseason like the players..Mentally and phyiscally so they can renew their minds and start fresh, because coaches can over coach at times, and try toomuch...

  • I think you'd probably better not read the forum because you're going to hear all of those things- maybe they're true...maybe not.

One thing I do know- we lost games last year because: 1) Our O line didn't open holes so we couldn't run -no matter WHAT PLAY is called you HAVE to have a hole to run, 2) our DTs didn't get any push and the backers were taken out of plays by the other team's O Line.

Now some of the secondary woes MAY have been due to coaching, but I doubt it was the sets we were in as much as it was lack of players knowing their assignments and executing them. You asked so that's MY opinion FWIW.

  • Hard to argue with any of this, especially the comments about Millard, the tight ends and the OL. And I agree, let's just see if it finally happens and not be told that it's going to happen.

    Faultline

  • It's amazing that OU ended the season ranked #5 in the nation in total offense given the ineptitude of the coaches and the torture they put the fan base through by not building their offense around every fan's preferences.

While I believe there is some validity to these complaints (which is what they really are), I also believe that OU's coaches have a high mastery of the strengths and weaknesses of their players and their scheme and almost always capitalize on both.

The whole thing with Millard is so overblown for me. I am convinced that he will get more carries this year and that it will not be the game changer that so many here believe it to be.

At least part of the reason he has been so effective in his limited carries has been due to the element of surprise. I am also believe that if OU starts lining him up at RB and feeding him the ball 20-25 carries/game he will prove to be no better a RB than what OU has now.

One thing is for certain, no matter what happens this upcoming season, it will not please everybody.

Good point about Millard. Although, I hope he gets more carries this season because he is the only bruiser we have. I don't necessarily think he will lead the team in rushing... in fact, I don't think it would be good news if he did. However, he would be a nice compliment or change-of-pace back to our smaller and speedier backs. But only if he gets a significant number of caries.

  • Northcal, I know I'm quibbling, but I think you're missing the OP's point. The "complaint" has to do with the coaches saying things ("we're going to use Millard more"), and then not doing it. No one holds OU's coaches in higher esteem than I do, and much of the criticism of them on this board is either hilarious or outrageous, and sometimes both. I don't think the Op's complaint falls in those categories.

    Faultline

  • exactly, im just sick of hearing all the coach speak, all the stuff the fans want to hear, and hardly seeing it come true.. I do disagree, with the defense opinions.. i taped every game I could last year and I would say at leadt half the big plays we gave up there were more than 1 player scrambling to line up correctly, constantly looking at the sidelines for help.. All you have to do is rewatch the games..

  • I think this list is fairly representative of what most fans want to see. I have different thoughts on some of the numbers:

    1. Would like to see a little more Millard, but not much more. About 6-8 carries would be great. The Belldozer limits his potential touches.

    3. In this years team I don't see much potential for heavy tight end use. Hanna was good, but not great. The hard truth is OU has 2 new TE's and lack a legit TE threat. OU needs to use all its options, but simply don't think the use of the TE will be a priority with far better threats available at WR. Lets hope those guys develop, but at this stage just don't see a ton of touches to the TE's.

    5. Just don't see that as a problem. LJ has played great in spots, and rough in others. He however has never shown anything that would lead me to believe he is focused on goals outside of the team. I don't think he can carry a team, but do believe he can deliver a great season provided the OL & WR's perform at a high level.

    6. OU needs a capable threat in the return game. Totally agree.

  • Backup QBs are not going to get a lot of playing time unless we run the Belldozer a lot. Since Stoops arrived, he has never pulled the starting QB early, even in blowouts. Landry will play well into the 4th quarter of every game, regardless of the score, just like every other starting QB has done.

  • matteon, I agree and Im just hoping for a much needed change

I suppose I am unaware of which coach went on record as stating that Millard would get more carries and the context in which it was stated. Additionally, I give Heupel the benefit of the doubt that the idea of running Millard more did not escape him but rather he chose to take a different direction in the best interest of the team. Most all of the commentary I have read regarding Millard has emanated from fans that think he is Walter Payton incarnate. I have read coaches comments that have praised his overall play but not specific comments prior to last season that stated he was going to carry the ball more. Perhaps I missed it.

As far as the other points. I will summarize by contending that OU coaches have always spoken to the team through the media. I am glad they do and could care less about my personal unrealized expectations that were the result of off-season comments. I guess I have heard enough from these coches to know when they are speaking to a player, unit, or opposing team which is almost all of the time.

When Kevin Wilson stated the week prior to the BYU game that the OL was playing well and would surprise people, it was apparent soon thereafter he was looking to inspire confidence in a depleted unit.

The context of the OP post seemed to fluctuate from things " I do not want to hear" to general comments and recommendations. My take:

    1. Already addressed.
    2. Don't think you will hear this. If you do it is likely to boost the confidence of the unit.
    3. See #2.
    4. We will see if the "simplicity" theory holds up. Not sure how "simple" LSU and Bama's defenses are but they play at an exceptionally high level with single-digit Wonderlic players. I am not sold on simple schemes holding up in this conference.
    5. I believe the coaches put a higher premium on getting QB's Heisman's than the value added by playing back-ups. They appear to care more about how a Heisman can bring top flight QB's to the program. JMHO.
    6. I agree the return game is average. Yes average not bad. This one is a bit puzzling.
