I always like to keep folks informed with the goings on down here on the "dark side". (that will change before I die to be sure). Anyway here are some random thoughts and rumblings.
1) RG3 at Baylor is getting a lot of love for the Heismann and his stats are outstanding. I think a lot depends on what he does on his TV games like this week. Baylor still doesn't play very good defense but if the Bears continue to win-he is legit.
2) A$M again pulls a choke job. Give credit to OSU for the comeback at Kyle Field. (why is it we seem to always play them at night down there? Irrelevant now since they are leaving). I didn't think the team was Top 10 to begin with but we'll know more after their game with the Razorbacks.
3) T. Tech-not a good team yet but are improving. Still glad we have them at Norman.
4) TCU-Good for their competition but not as good as they have been. They will be super tough next year in FW.
5) UT-The "best" for last. They really think they turned a corner a couple of weeks ago with their big win over a bad UCLA team. For them to score 49 points against anyone is quite a feat. They will only get better especially on offense. Defensively they are solid and that will keep them in all their games. But you don't often win with inexperienced QB's although the Longhorn faithful are "confident" that little McCoy will end up as good as his brother. Shipley? Probably better than his brother if they get him the ball. Malcolm Brown is as good as advertised. They finally have some weapons on offense. How they play on the road (Missouri for instance) will determine their fate. I said before the season they would win 8-10 games and I still stand by that. Still have some weak sisters in the Big 12. (or the Nothing Nine or whatever they are called now).
Conference Realignment-There now should be no question that UT and Deloss Dodds in particular have been basically running this conference since it was formed. They have the largest school, the most money and the state of Texas has four teams in the league. (for now). Nebraska had enough and left. Colorado always felt uncomfortable and is probably a better fit for the Pac 12. A$M leaving was a slap at Texas and in my opinion-they over reacted and will be a mid-level SEC team at best. But there should be some good games at Kyle Field. (Alabama, LSU, etc.). The discouraging part is that now the SEC has a very strong foot into the state of Texas for recruiting purposes. We'll have to see how that plays out.
The "fascination" with OU. You would be amazed at how closely a lot of the UT guys I work with concern themselves with OU. They normally tell me about a problem recruit or an injury or some other goings on with the Sooners before I know. (they subscribe to Orangebloods). I think they think of OU "infringing" on their entitlement to be the King of the Big 12. They constantly get the best players out of Texas and with a lot of recruiting services down here-they buy into the hype. One thing I've noticed is that while Texas gets a lot of great players (several of which OU tried to recruit) they all seem to play as freshmen (recruiting promises?) and they make an impact in some cases but they never seem to get any better. Kudos to the OU staff. As much as we fuss about some of the things they do-you can't argue with success and we've had guys who were 3 star recruits turn into stars and others who made little or no contribution have the "light come on" near the end and be major contributors. You seldom see that at Texas.
good analysis...I don't think you are giving Texass enough credit though. I do think the players develop at Texas and the fact they have some top tier NFL talent, much more than OU, supports that. However, while in college, Stoops gets his team to often outperform Texas because - simply - he is better. :-)
Much more? Jamal Brown, Chris Chester, Mark Clayton, Curtis Lofton, Sam Bradford, Adrian Peterson, Tommy Harris (Picked up by SD), Demarco Murray, really I don't have time or space to name EVERY OU player who's at least on an NFL practice squad....Texas has their share but not THAT many more than us. Juaquin Iglesias, Brody Eldridge, Trent Williams, Jon Cooper, CJ AhYou, Remi Ayodele, on and on and on....
However, Brown's most prized recruits are the biggest head cases in the NFL...
You hit a home run with that one. Ricky Williams, Cedric Benson, Roy Williams, Vince Young, etc., etc. I would say that McCoy and Shipley were the exceptions to the rule but they weren't "can't miss" first rounders either.

ole Skip - I too watched that texas/ucla gme -- both teams are bad- really bad !! what texas accomplished against a weak bruin team is really not anything to write home about -- Okla will win easily --
If a john blake coached team that hasn't won one game can beat the whorns then anything can happen in that game. I'll be happy with any kind of win.

south of austin down around san antonio there are many sooner fans , they follow travis lewis and tom wort and more and more i see ou hats and shirts and many are upset of whats going on in the conference and texas influence , Many follow us close and its nice when we are winning cause texas fans dont say anything when we are....but man they are horrible if we lose...sure wish we could have gotten that cb from brandeis high he is a stud but he wants to play in the Sec..and i hope we dont see more of that unless we decide to go there too....
My outside opinion of Texas recruits is they get really good players but many don't have much upside, they've basically peaked their senior year in high school whereas OU will take someone who has the potential to get better and carry more weight but remain at the same speed. Better evaluators of future talent in my opinion. Texas still has great players but OU consistently has more because of that scouting/philosophy.
