There appears to be more ifs this year than years past.

  • The post was worth my July subscription, and I feel like tackling someone in my office building.

  • Brush off the haters IRLOU. I've experienced worse. Sometimes what's right isn't what's popular, though I'm not necessarily agreeing with your original post! Your opinion is appreciated, just keep on posting.

call them doubts... callhim a pessimist.. I call them all concerns....

1 We really will not know Whaleys conditionin until he gets in pads and goes against the defense.. I didnt know the number 1 juco runningback had problems holding the ball? That is a huge concern..Finch and clay do provide us with some rb depth, but for how long? every year they get hurt.... thats a concern. smith, and ross dont count until they get in pads and see what they can, esp if they can pick up the offense, block, and line up correctly... another concern...

Im not too worried about the DB'S... If they improve on only one thing, one area, im hoping that they get lined up properly with no confusion.. This was a huge concern last year because they scrambled quite a bit last year in a lot of games, looking for signals from the sidelines, to get lined up as the ball snapped....

Kish? well the problem here is when OU hired him, he was made out to be some great recruiter, we were led to believe he was one of the best...all his relationships would pay off and he would land big time recruits NOW.... not later, not wait and see, and most certainly not until he starts building NEW relationships.... so I have backed off my dissappointment in his closings skills, and will give him a pass until this time next year.. he should be able to land a big time line backer by next year, right?

one of my concerns is at the qb spot.. I sure hope our backups get some quality work and get into some games this year....

I gave you an up vote just on your thoughts on Kish.

I guess I disagree. Whaley and Damien Williams could easily be the best 1-2 tandem in the Big 12, and the only agreement there could be from Austin. OU has a top 3 QB returning, a potential AA wr returning (Sills), the best incoming freshman wr in the country in at least this mans opinion (Metoyer), the best freshman class of wr's in memory in the Big 12, the best OL in the Big 12 (and this one I am VERY sure of). And OU has Bester coming in (class done, good grades, basically a procedural issue now), and potentially two JUCO AA's in Latu and Gardner (we should know within a week or two), and this is just on the offense.

What else? Well, 5 senior DL's, which no one has in the Big 12 has. A tremendous talent in Chuka at DE, and JUCO AA at the other DE as a backup, and the fastest and one of the most experienced LB corps in the country. And at least three db's who pro scouts think have a very good chance of being drafted, and one of which, Jefferson, who may be AA level.

And easily the most solid kicking team in the Big 12.

Worried. I would be very worried if I played this team. I would hate to be the head coach that has to try to scheme against this talent. Basically, if you don't have a superb defensive team you are in deep, deep trouble.

Because of my background I have had the opportunity to know a bit about some of these players that OU has coming in. I can tell you that Jalen (who may not get to play this year, we should know soon), Gardner and Bester are absolutely mismatches against the defenses of this conference. There is no DB that can match Jalens speed in the Big 12, and Gardner and Bester are mismatches. And don't forget about Metoyer I personally believe that he is something OU just has not had under Stoops. Metoyer is an incredible talent. he has the best hands I have seen in many, many years.

All-American honors are just not given out at any level in college football. At the JUCO level they have to be earned like anywhere else. OU got four of them, Latu, Gardner, Williams and Nelson. And some have Bester at that level as well. I think he is as good as the others, but maybe not as polished as a Gardner.

Gardner, and secondarily, Bester, are essential. Gardner is physically a freak, much as AD was. Norvell and Stoops know this, and know that if he gets in (and we will know very soon) that OU has gotten in the third piece of a wr core that is overwhelming at a college level. There are few teams that will be able to match up with Stills, Metoyer, and Gardner. Too much size, speed, talent. And I do believe that we may see Jackson, and perhaps Jazz back as well, but time will tell.

Honestly, if I was an OU fan I would take off the month of July and go fishing. By the 2nd week of August you will know what you have got. You just don't know what had you have been dealt with yet. But I can tell you that this deck of cards MAY have twice the number of aces, and the chances of getting a strong hand have gone up considerably if you get to play it.

One more thing. No one is talking about Chaz Nelson. You are going to get a nice surprise, Sooner fans.

Want Questions-try tejas. First question, do we have a QB that can complete two passes in a row?

    Canyoneer

This I know. Someone whose opinion I would value over anybody but maybe Bob (even over Heupel or Norvell) Gardner is better than Metoyer. Now that is on film mind you. This was also in March.

Chaz Nelson I was told though got lots of reps in spring ball and is the most athletic of all the DE's. He lacks strength though and size. I am going to have to disagree with you about his role this year. If he has gotten stronger then may be. Mike Stoops wants more physicality out of our DE's and DT's this year. Their scheme is a cross from what they did in Mike's years here. Mike really likes how Pelini is using his defensive line. It is a cross from read and react and penetration. Dusty wants them to penetrate from the git go. Venables and Mikey want the linemen to throw their guys. That is not easy unless you are very strong. Suh and Crick were or are. With today's offenses defensive linemen without protecting their gap with the QB run game can give up a huge gain.

  • Depth on defense is my biggest worry (especially at linebacker). We really need to stay healthy for a change.

    SoonerGarth

  • As usual, Canyoneer's post is an experienced voice of reason among naysayers.

Let me ask you this, would you rather being talking about how we have the best offensive line in years and then not be able to run the ball in the red zone? Wilson oversold us on that a few times. How many times have we been told that this overall unit of guys is the best talent the coaching staff has seen at this time of year? There are many other examples such as this in the Stoops era.

I'd rather have some question marks and concerns pre-season and then have things turn out BETTER than expected rather than underachieve due to overly lofty expectations. 2000 was a pleasant surprise. I'm very cautious but somewhat optimistic this year.

    WestlakeSooner

  • We do have a bunch of question marks. For the most part it seems we have talented but unproven players for these positions. We have had this in the past and sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.

The defense was bad and lost their best db,lb, and ends and now we will be good?

Will Landry break the single season interception record for the third time in his career? Probably not but who would have thought he would as a junior.

  • I'm sorry to be the one to break this to you, but it's July 17, not 15.

    DESooner247

  • OK, I started this thread and now I learn one of my concerns has turned out not too well. I just read that Latu is not expected to pass the class he must pass. So our OT's will be Lane Johnson, Daryl Williams and Tyrus Thompson. I hope Williams turns out to be as good as the coaches say and Thompson can play some.

  • Let all the sunshine pumpers take a deep breathe,If you think that OU"s defense will be better this year you had better think again.Mike Stoops has taken over a defense that gave up more yards in the baylor,TT,& OSu games in the history of the program(that sucks & should have never happened)It will take Mike at least a couple of years to correct the mess that was established by BV & I liked Brent, but things were not working out & Bob could"nt bring himself to correct it,by firing & hiring(it all just work itself out).(a good CEO takes the responsibilty & makes the tuff decisions I am waiting for Bob to do that)Go Sooners!!Flame away, but think about what i said!

Did Bob not replace his defensive coordinator? Did he not say the defense wasn't good enough? Is he supposed say it's my fault the defense failed? Of course not. CEOs don't do it either. They tell you about the state of things and then you see the moves they make to improve it.

Will these changes improve things? Who knows? YOU DON'T! Neither do I and neither does Bob Stoops but he did take action to improve the D if he can and that is what a CEO is supposed to do. He doesn't have to take the blame when things go wrong because he's going to get blamed anyway right Sooner8? Stoops doesn't have to say it but it would take a fool not to see that he saw a problem and went about addressing it. Do Ya Think?

Now if you really believe that Mike and Brent were going to be equals in the new arrangement regardless of the spin that was being put on it, I think there is a bridge to nowhere in Alaska you can invest in. Mike was brought in to fix something if he can and not necessarilly to be Brent's equal leastwise Brent might still be here.

What I do know is I don't know.

Yes he should've said the defense wasn't good enough and at least part of it was Bob's fault since he coached, at least part time, the defensive backs. So I would expect him to say something.

Not very good against osu, bu and tt, but what about the other teams? I think its more consistency than talent. But hey, you can say what you want and you have done that. It wont be long before we find out.

  • having questions on july 15th isn't a a sign of doom in the least, it's precisely how how college football has worked forever. every january you lose 20-25% of your most experienced players, and hopefully come up with solutions by september.
