The Courting of Dorial Green Beckham

  • Wow, very interesting read. Everyone's boat get's floated differently and the winning tradition and big WR stats didn't seem to make any impact at all. In fact it seemed to hurt us when the coaches presented all the info.

I think the coaches did exactly what they should have showing him that if we wanted to be a star WR, OU was the obvious choice.

When it comes down to it I just don't think he was going to set foot outside Mizzu. Too much family stuff going on.

  • I had so many misconceptions about his recruitment, that it is hard to know where to begin. Arkansas comes out looking just awful in this article with boosters offering the family money. The family didn't have many good things to say about Petrino either.

The article wasn't very favorable toward OU either. I thought the family was fond of Norvell; the article did not make it sound like they were big fans, and they seemed to accuse him of being a negative recruiter. They didnt seem to like the pressure he put on them. Interesting that they didnt seem to care about OU's winning statistics that Stoops and Norvell brought on the recent visit.

I had read that the family didn't like Pinkel's helicopter entrance, but apparently they did like it. I didnt realize that they committed an NCAA violation by bringing DGB in the copter. Mizzou would have (and did) done anything to get DGB. Is it ok to offer a recruits brother a student assistant job to lure the recruit to the school?

The article seems credible as the family is quoted frequently.

  • I didn't think OU came out unfavorably. In fact, it didn't seem like they were mentioned very much at all.

  • I always hate these types of articles. It always makes it out like the team that got the player was so much nicer and these other schools were so messed up. You could do the same thing with our highly rated recruits and we would have been this incredible place and people. Always like the home town spin. Miz really gave the full court press and got the home state guy. I don't know how you could not know the atmosphere in Ark against Alabama would be better than OU vs Colorado. That is what did us in, really? Good luck to him in MIZ. Won't win anything team wise while he is there, but he may get some individual awards. He will be a hometown / state hero for staying, and that is what sold him.

Brule, your comments are pretty accurate. I think our coaches could learn a little from Mizzou's Full Court Press, the problem is we aren't going to win many recruits when we have to compete with the Hype of a Highly Ranked Mizzou Basketball Team. I was impressed with all of the little things that Mizzou did to Make the Sale and that is exactly what they did. The Devil is in the Details. Props to Mizzou. Hopefully we do better next time.

I'm actually very curious to see how DGB does in college. Regardless of where he went, there is going to be some bumps in the road. Really an interesting read.

  • Well I think this was an interesting article. We get smoozed so much when it comes to the real insided story about recruiting that it is interesting to read this. Not saying it is gospel, just not written with crimson colored glasses. It was interesting to get a recruits-eye view of Mack Brown's technique. I agree that it is not very flattering toward OU or ARK. But folks have wondered why we whiff on the top WR recruits (Jones and Maclin come to mind) and this may offer some insight. Hope somebody forwards this to the OU coaches for reviewbiggrin.

  • The game atmosphere thing is out of anyone's control. Wonder how he would have perceived Ark if it would have been Ark vs Vandy?

The big thing here and it's not new is how hard coaches have to work to sell their program and at the expense of others. OU didn't look favorable here, but Ark was clearly the dog.

Thankfully the Sooners landed great talent at WR, and DGB won't be playing against us. Not the worst ending to WR recruitment this year. Time will tell if his performance will be worth all of this fuss. Good luck to him.

    Sooner5020

  • I actually don't have a problem with how the coaches recruited him. They showed him details and were very serious, which is what he will see once he arrives on campus. Some of that "extra mile" stuff that took place during his recruitment will stop now that they've got him. It was obvious that Missouri is the place for him, and I wish him luck.

    SoonerMaestro2

  • They made a point of mentioning that Kelly and ND was dropped because he threw down his headset, but it was fine for Pinkel to get a DUI.

He was always going to Mizzou clear back to when reports said Mizzou players were the only ones he messaged with last summer.

The Beckhams now do not come across as the family that handled recruiting with class as has been said. They wanted the press all along as this article proves. There is no reason for them to still be out talking to media and reporting negatively on the schools that wined and dined them.

Think Mack likes being referred by them as "Picture Guy?"

I think overall OU has recruited some really good WRs. Metoyer was what the best or at the very worse top 5 WR in the nation last year.

  • with the receivers we had already secured OU should have stopped recruiting him we were just wasting our time. sometimes its better to just walk away then continue to spin OUr wheels knowing that he was never going to leave the security of his family to venture out into the world.

    boomersooner53

  • A couple if thoughts:

OU gets it's share of top recruits. We get 'em with facts, tradition and basic recruiting.

Coach Stoops will never be a "fly in a chopper kind of guy.". Any recruit who basis his decision on something like that comes across as a fool.

If OU can get it's basketball program going again that will be a great recruiting tool. Right now, not so much.

I would guess Mizzou is clean on the offering his brother thing, since it was "no strings attached.". Arky, on the other hand, might have some 'splainin' to do as their offer seemed to be a specific inducement linked to DGB coming. (not to mention the booster call.)

I would rather have solid. Talented kids at OU that are here for the right reasons than some of these kids that are all about the frills.

And who fries sushi? In my world that is called fish sticks.

    Steady

  • I don’t know maybe I’m too skeptic but after reading that I’m glad we got who we got and Mizzou got who they got. From my take this young man isn’t a team player he’s a “me” player. OU showed him what they have done with good players and give him an idea of what he could accomplish at OU. Seems like he might have figured out early that at OU and ‘Bama he wasn’t going to be the biggest fish in a little pond at either of those places. Both OU and ‘Bama were dropped from his list because their coaches were in the business of winning football games and not solely because he was the best thing since sliced bread.
Then the family slammed Arkansas because a booster tried to get some money in their direction. OK this is my shocked face, they really buy players in the SEC, tell me it aint so. The next thing they might be interested in is that they hold grudges in the SEC and that bunch from Mizzou has to play at least two of those schools they dissed every year that he’s going to be there. He may want to look into a titanium cup for those games.
Did he choose Mizzou because of what they have to offer in their football program? No, he chose them because they love me they really, really do love me is basically what he said. They came to see me in a whirlybird and I even got to set in it. Then they hung signs from overpasses telling me how much they wanted me and how great I was. You don’t have to be real shallow to fall for that but it helps.
Oh and who else was he really impressed with? You guessed it ‘ol yeller himself. Why, because he ran a great program? No that wasn’t the reason it was because he took a lot of pictures of them every time he saw them because they were all so special. They felt so touched by him that he was the only coach they bothered to call to say they were going to be going in another direction. When it’s not about the school, the team or the coaches, when it’s all about you then you don’t have to do the correct thing. After all those other coaches and schools can read the paper if they want to find out where he’s going.
Well I wish him well on his cellar dweller team in the SEC and really do hope he makes it out of college in that conference without too many injuries. Because you know that some of those good ‘ol boys down there aren’t above a few cheap shots and somebody who they feel disrespected them.

  • Not very flattering for the losers in the great DGB sweepstakes, I can only wonder how the poisonous arrows would have flown had his girlfriend went to OCU. To me a college decision is a very serious thing and a kid/parent could make a mistake in choosing a school so why would you not want coaches to be honest and straight shooters, not all kids/parents are going to be interested in winning tradition and the Greens are one of them but I cannot help but to think that our coaches were probably more gracious in wishing him and his family the best after losing out, I also have to wonder how the coaches feel after reading this article.

  • As NevedaSooner stated earlier, this article makes DGB sound like a "big fish, small pond" player and football is a team sport.

How in the hell is it not a recruiting violation to purchase billboards with MIZ-DGB and then have coordinated handouts from the university to chant MIZ-DGB at a basketball game the same day?

In the long-run, Missouri looks worse in this article. How petty can you be? Helicopter, billboards, coordinated chanting, T-shirts with the kid's image on them? How desperate can you look?

I do think we were in it for a short time but you are dead on with the mutual respect thing about telling the coaches but that just leads me to believe that they were keeping their options open. Sometimes it is best to take the high road because who knows the Greens may face OU on the field before he is done.

    oufisherman

  • Arkansas fans are saying the reason Gardner chose OU was because he wouldn't qualify at Arkansas. Someone please tell me that's a load of bovine fecal matter.

  • Sounds to me like Arkansas and Missouri agreed to save the beckams the cost of a college education for dgb's brother I'm not saying that's why he chose mu but it was mentioned more than once.

    otrsooner

  • My impression is that they didn't care to much for the stats on our history/Offense. Then the story goes on about the negative banter, tattle telling of another coach about another. Which you could see it didn't sit well with the mother.

Then about fate and the car breaking down before coming down to oklahoma. To only see the coaches act as if DGB was going to commit & fans at the game.

Ironically after this long recruitment by stoops, they send mack brown a text that DGB will be going to Mizzou.

Definetly telling in that you could see the family liked mack and all of his "fakeness" rather than the straight forward approach from our staff. It's a shame they were not able to see the family atmosphere that is created by everyone and every sport.

    oupike1723

  • More times than not Fate does work in strange ways. It could have been working in OUr favor the day "the initial guy" and his family came to Norman. Hmm?
