Texas A&M Coach Sherman

  • a lot of rumors going around that they will officially fire him tomorrow...or at least in the next few days

if true, there are an awful lot of jobs open up this year

doesn't it seem more than usual?

He was another poor football hire by A&M. I think they will have a significant buyout of Sherman and also the Big 12 exit fees and will have to pay a significant amount to acquire a name coach and I don't know how they will afford since they've been financially in the pot athletically the last few years. Maybe they have an alum(s) that are going to step forward and reward the university with big donations to take care of these major expenses in return for Aggy riding off to the SEC. Who knows? Who really cares???

Also, I read yesterday or today that an Aggy athletic official had tweeted or something about Loftin (the bowtie president) being a wuss (or some other derogatory term). Byrne wrote about in his weekly post to the Aggies and said that punishment would be given to the guilty dept employee!!!

    Gotta love Aggieland!!!

  • I read the same thing, apparently the guy who tweeted it is going to lose his job. I know they are financially in the red so I'm interested as well in how they are going to pull this off

  • I never have been a fan of Sherman as a HC but in the past hoped that he would win just enough to stay on in aggieland. Now that they are leaving for the SEC, I don't care who they hire. Think Sumlin of Houston (former OU assistant) would be a good choice.

  • This affects a Normanite that you'll probably remember, former Norman High School and Nebraska quarterback Zac Taylor, who is an assistant at A&M and is married to Coach Sherman's daughter. Small world.

I'd hate it for him, but certain that all will land other jobs.

  • They better make a move a lot of good coaches are being picked up.. If the rumor of Sumlin to ASU they missed the boat there..

I'm hell when I'm well.. And, I am never sick!

  • If there's any truth to ATM's urgency, it's that they really want Sumlin to return to College Station and are afraid he won't be available much longer. I get this from a friend on the ATM athletic faculty.

  • I don't believe they will fire Sherman. Their athletic program is just getting out of the red ink. They put some fannies in the seats the last two years and were starting to see the light. With the money they will have to pay to leave the conference, this will set them back some. I don't think they can afford to fire him. Think about this: ut pays M. Brown $5MM per year, we pay B. Stoops almost $5mm per year. Next year A&M will play Alabama, who pays Saban $5MM, and LSU, who pays Miles almost $4MM. A&M pays Sherman $2.3 MM and he got a big pay raise for this year. He has one year left on his contract. They would have to hire a Sumlin to keep the pay in line. They can't afford to pay Sherman off and hire a quality coach. No, sir, it isn't going to happen this year.

  • I don't think the Aggies have ever had a problem with money. If they really want to make a change and if they really want Sumlin, they will get him.

No they are in the red big time to the University (athletic department). I would be surprised if they can swing it. Were not talking chump change on this.

  • Sumlin has a $2 million bonus coming if he stays at Houston through 2012.

A local Houston sportswriter - not Richard Justice - thinks UCLA is attractive, "a sleeping giant." I think competing with USC in the same town has side-tracked many good coaching careers. I can't even imagine what kind of coach could build what kind of program to compete there for attention. The Leach-Briles-Sumlin shoot-em-up offense would be as good as any start-up, but the next step up to lasting respectability just looks impossible. It might even require new helmets, and I'm not sure the institution is willing to go that far.

  • A&M is an absolute joke. Slocum wasn't good enough for the Aggies yet he essentially had the highest winning percentage ever at A&M with a .721 winning percentage. (Guys prior to 1929 had higher winnning percentages but to me that is meaningless.) I realize his last few years were bad (In fact quite bad) but bad seasons is a historical fact of A&M football.

Franchione had a .533 winning percentage. Sherman is .500. They just don't understand that they only 55% of their games historically and that includes the good old days when the big boys had way better talent than most other schools. Today that simply isn't the case. (The all time winning percentage is 58% but that inculdes FBS and lower schools). They want a coach to win 75% of the time but their is zero historical data to support the notion A&M is capable of winning 75% of its games over an extended period of time. Bear Brynat only won 64% of the time at A&M. They just are not all that relevant in college football and no matter how hard they claim they are, they are not going to become particularly relevant.

I am glad I went to OU because it would suck to have gone to a school like A&M, OSU, Missouri or somwhere similar constantly believing in the pipe dream that it was a football school.

remember when Nebraska did that to Solich after a 9-3 season because he wouldn't relegate the Big 12 to Oklahoma and Texas?

I used to think the same thing, but the reality is they don't support football. They don't pay the coach and the facilities are crappy.

  • Sumlin would be a good hire for A&M, I think. He knows the recruiting area and has proven he can handle the spotlight. The question is, could he find a Case Keenum to lead the A&M offense?

I would think he would get someone close...he could recruit better to college station than he could houston

Case is a really good QB

  • When I think of A&M I think of animal husbandry and cadets kissing their sisters even when the other team scores and not football for a very long time! They need to get someone credible in their quick to be successful early in the SEC because now is the time to do it, if they do not make a good hire and endure 3-4 seasons of mediocre football it will be a huge up hill battle. Sumlin would be a good fit.

It's not like A&M doesn't already have talent on their roster. They have had, I believe, two straight top-10 or top-15 recruiting classes. The problem is that Sherman's teams are underperforming their talent level and resultant expectations. I don't think Sumlin will have that problem. And, you're right, Sumlin should be able to recruit better talent to College Station, too.

yeah, Bohls has been tweeting it and apparently Matt Davis, the QB commit tweeted about how Sherman came to his house and told him to honor his commitment all the while knowing he was no longer the head coach

that's what GigEm247 is reporting at this time

not sure about the buyout but it looks pretty solid he is gone

  • I don't care one way or the other if he stays or goes. Personally, I think Sherman is a decent coach. I know some on here think he is terrible but I tend to disagree. A & M is done to me. I hope they lose - often. I just wish we had not lost a couple of prize recruits. Fuller would have been a force at OU. Oh well...
