Statements from Joe Castiglione and Bob Stoops

  • Joe Castiglione, Vice President/Director of Athletics

"I'm in full support of President Boren's announced decision for OU to remain in the Big 12. The reforms which he has been discussing with the presidents in the conference are very important to the future stability and strength of the Big 12 Conference."

    Bob Stoops/Head Football Coach

"I'm very pleased that we're staying in the Big 12 Conference and appreciate the opportunity to work very closely with President Boren throughout the decision-making process."

    Dave Hunt

  • Why would there be reforms? We have no leverage.

Boren possesses the authority to withdraw from the Big 12 and apply to the SEC.

We've already made public statements that we are remaining in the Big 12.

We pinky swear on that? Boren can withdraw at anytime.

  • Good for Nebraska and Texas A+M. They knew that Utea cannot be trusted and made the move. OU waited around and dragged OSU with them...and got nuked. No leverage at all for OU and now just waiting for Utea to drop OU at their whim.

  • this is so disappointing. We will be back in this mess within a year. Apparently I should have been praying that God would have given our leader better insight. It makes absolutely no sense for us to stay on this sinking ship and if their solution is to have the big east join us I will be even more disappointed.

Texas will acquiesce and give token concession whereby they can spin how they saved the B12. But make no mistake about it there will be no conference stability nor will all schools be members on an equal basis. Neither will the LHN be weakened in any significant manner whatsoever.

Texas will still have what they want a conference where they call all the shots, a TV network that nets them $15 million annually and OU as their #1 bitch. We have twice had the opportunity to negate power by mitigating the TV footprint advantage via California's population and the the Pac12 TV package rules. Twice Texas has strategically prohibited those changes.

Personally if I was Boren I would be talking to Larry Scott about OU, Kansas and Missouri along with Texas as a pod and he probably is. I think Scott could sell the presidents on OU, Kansas and Missouri as they meet they both meet the academic requirements and jointly add an 8 million TV footprint to the picture. With the then demise of the B12 Texas would have to follow them west sacrificing their conference power and individual school LHN network in the process. With only regional network possibilities with another school available in the Pac12 and that other school logically being OU Texas would have experience additional exasperations showing OU programs on their LHN TV network.

A remote possibility but worth exploring.

The problems we face today exist because those that work for a living are out numbered by those that vote for a living.

  • We'll we know who our daddy is. We were played like a fiddle. As disappointed as i've been in a long time. If this happened to another university we would be laughing our asses off

    shad20

  • If what happened? Pac 12 didn't want Texas with their baggage. If we add an average team like CO or A&M we'll still be a BCS conference.

    hooknladder

  • What happened is Oklahoma said we have an invitation without Texas to the Pac. We were lied to they only wanted us if texas came with us. We then have to say we didn't want to go anyway. We are stuck in a conference were we do exactly what Texas says. We lost all leverage. We talked about how powerful we were. Everyone said Oklahoma is in control of this thing. Come to find out we are little brother and do what Texas says we do

    What happened:

    1. We found out that the PAC didn't want us. Neither does the Big 10. That's rejection. Not good for our image or ego.

    2. Texas will remain in power and keep the LHN. Texas will end up getting their way.

    3. We'll have to deal with this whole thing again next year.

    4. Boren stood up and played hardball, and ended up with egg on our face. That's embarrassing!

  • There are very few institutions out there athletically that can laugh at us with any credibility......that's like laughing at the rich kid who dresses different but he gets to still drives home in a mercedes....while the ones laughing are walking home....

  • I firmly believe that this played out exactly as Boren hoped it would. I stated as much in a post a couple of weeks ago. They never wanted to leave the Big XII, so much of this was posturing and leverage to get the point that these reforms would perhaps be reality.

I must say I've never been so disappointed in the leadership of OU. The Big XII is a horrible conference being led around by Texas, despite what people on this board tell you. We should have left last year and we didn't because we screwed around with Texas and OSU. Despite assurances that Boren and Castiglione would do what was best for the university no matter the intentions of Texas and OU, we continued through the process this year tying ourselves to the hip of OSU.

Thankfully, I never got my hopes too much. After last year, it was obvious that Boren couldn't pull it off. I had no illusions that he could, or would, do it this year either. Now it's worse because we've lost A&M and we are talking about adding teams like BYU. BYU? Are you kidding me? What the righteous f*&( are these idiots thinking?) It's a dead conference, even as it lives on. Second tier at best.

Back to Stillwater, Ames, Manhattan, Lubbock etc. Sigh.

  • Credibility is earned on the playing field not by conference affiliation or by University presidents or money for that matter. To me you guys are all a bunch of woosey idiots crying about not being in the in croud. Last time I checked there was no requirement that to win a national championship we had to be in the PAC 16 or the big 10.

  • They dont want us with OSU tagging along. No way do they like Colorado and Utah better than OU. Every time we play, its a big game for the other team. Its a huge draw for whatever community we visit. Just chill fellas, this thing just has the burner turned down a bit, but it will heat up again. texas wont make any meaningful concessions (SP?) and everyone will make nice, but instead of smiles, they will have evil grins on their faces.

To get recruits to win championships you need to have TV exposure and play in a conference that high school players want to play in. Many high school recruits go to SEC schools just because they want to play in the SEC.

we have tons of leverage. OU can still leave, without looking bad, if the conference does not seem stable. If OU leaves, Texas is doomed. That is leverage.

  • OU can leave to where? Pac 12 isnt taking OU solo that far from other schools with no travel partner. Big 10? No. Sec is a no because OU wont go. That leaves indy? OU has zero options as it has nowhere to land. We all thought Utea ran the league before, just wait, we aint seen nuthin yet.

    ELP Sooner

  • What an embarrassment! We played with fire last year and this year we got burned. Colorado, UNL and A&M have far more foresight and leadership than we ever will. texAss owns the Big XII, thus they own us. They need to rename the conference texAss and the spineless 8. Again, what a joke!

    DrSooner

  • I had a bad feeling about this whole thing. We were putting way too much infuses on what would be best for the lower end schools in this conference instead of what was best for OU. UT paid lip service to going here or there but truth be told they didn’t want to go anywhere. Why would UT go to the PAC when they run this conference. They let us go out on the limb just far enough to fall off before deciding to try to keep the Big-1 + 8 alive for the benefit of the have nots in the conference. They knew they weren’t going to give up their power and TV network to go to the PAC. They also knew that they could talk us out of going alone because it would make us look like we are jumping ship and leaving the poor to drown.

I’m sure that any conference would have taken us if we would have applied for admittance by our selves. But trying to work any kind of deal that includes UT is doomed to failure because UT is going to submarine it. Now we have been to the brink two years in a row I sure that the PAC is getting tired of our drama. No the current Pres of the Big-1 + 8 isn’t going to step down nor is UT going to tone down or share their TV deal. We have just been played and played very well. We were trying to be the nice guys in this deal and nice guys finish last in a deal like this.

    NevadaSooner

  • Let's just go win our eighth national Championship and quit worrying about BS we cannot control.

    WestlakeSooner

  • I think we should apply, without OSU to the SEC immediately, and leave with A&M. Let Texas rot in its own mess.

    soonerschooner

  • Boren looks really bad in this deal...inept, outclassed, and outfoxed by UT...there is no other way to spin this. We flexed our muscles and UT called our bluff. TX's B!tch sure appears to be what happened here.
