Spring Football - Defensive Tackle Position

  • I am excited for the first time in three years about our DT's. McGee had a tough year with injuries but Walker and MacFarland had good years. I thought that MacFarland played at an All-Star level towards the end of the season and definitely in the Iowa bowl game. Stacey is finally big enough to play DT and Jamarkus looks like the kid we thought we were getting when he entered as a freshman. Plus Torrea Peterson is now on board and understands that he has to play even when he isn't 100%. I am glad he decided to stay. He has the size and thickness to play. And then, for the best part, we have the two freshmen, Jordan Phillips and Jordan Wade. Phillips is a super-freak as far as athleticism goes. The year of red-shirting should really help him. The small school he played at in Kansas did not really get him ready for Big XII football. We should see him make a move this spring. His athleticism is off the charts. I am only slightly less excited about Wade. He was a monster in the 5A playoffs his senior year. Both of these guys have SEC size written all over them. As I have heard nothing of Marquis Anderson, I will withhold judgement until James or someone else passes along some information. With the three guys we have returning and the number of starts they have, we should really be improved at the position. Then add in Torrea and the three new guys, we really have some top notch prospects. It is easy to see why we were so selective about recruiting DT's this year. I think it is a very positive sign that the coaches feel good about Peterson and Phillips because we did not go out and offer every DT we thought might play. I think this position will be much improved next year.

  • Uhmmmmm... Optimism.... I like it... A reach (ref. all-star)...but its a new season..

  • I agree that we could see the first real improvement at that position in over two years. Vets are more veteran and the young guys are very athletic and big.

Not having excellent push from the DTs hurt us in many ways the last two years.

  • I'm excited about Philips with his size and athletic ability he could "potentially" be the best in the Stoops era "potentially". I think Wade will RS he's been out of football for a year and there's no reason really not to RS him. I believe James reported that coach Shipp was very high on Anderson. McFarland did seem to come on towards the end of the year and Walker had his moments as well during season. McGee just had a bad year I feel he gained to much weight and expect him to come back a little lighter next season. The biggest issue for these three for me is consistency so if all three improve and become more consistent along with one or all three of Phillips, Anderson and Peterson earning playing time and making an impact then this position could possibly be a position of strength. One thing is for sure depth will not be an issue.

  • I've said many times that this is the area we really need to shore up. Have seen quite a few people reference the play and size of our linebackers, but I think our linebacker play will improve DRAMATICALLY if our Dline improves to the point that our D tackles require some double teams. I really belive this will be our greatest area of improvement this year. Improvement in the trenches will help also with our secondary play. As excited as I am about the veterans bulking up, it's the younger D tackles that will hopefully get us over the hump. They will without a doubt go through some growing pains, but as alluded to above, they have the size and athleticism we've been lacking the past several years. I hope they all bring nastiness and attitude next year. Not trying to compare, but those D tackles from Bama and LSU just seem to play like they are pissed off... that is what we need...
