Sooners signee Courtney Gardner arrested in Nevada - DOk

  • Sooners signee Courtney Gardner arrested in Nevada

OU FOOTBALL RECRUITING: University of Oklahoma football signee Courtney Gardner was arrested over the weekend for obstructing a police officer. Washoe County sheriff's deputies said Gardner became belligerent when the drive of the car he was riding in was arrested.

FROM STAFF REPORTS | Published: March 12, 2012 Oklahoman

Oklahoma football signee Courtney Gardner was arrested over the weekend for obstructing a peace officer.

According to a report from the Reno Gazette-Journal, Gardner was arrested around 1 a.m. Sunday after a vehicle he was riding in was stopped by sheriff's deputies. The driver, Ardian Smith, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and other traffic violations.

“During contact with the driver, Gardner became belligerent,” said Armando Avina, a spokesman for the Washoe County Sherrif's Office. “There were five occupants, and the deputy noted an immediate smell of alcohol and marijuana. Somebody (in the car) said, ‘Don't you know who we are? We're Division I athletes.'”

Avina said Gardner, 21, continued to yell at the deputy, who called in back-up units.

This is Gardner's second misdemeanor arrest in the Reno area in the last 2½ years, according to the Gazette-Journal. He was arrested for minor in possession of alcohol in November 2009.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Gardner played two seasons at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., and became one of the most sought-after juco receiver recruits in the country. He had given a verbal commitment to Arkansas but switched late in the recruiting process to Oklahoma. He has two years of eligibility at Oklahoma.

I dont know...sounds fishy that anyone would yell that a police officer...not saying that he didnt do it, but it sounds a bit contrived.

  • Not a huge deal to me, yea he sounded like he was drinking but he is 21....he wasn't driving. We don't know who said we're Division I athletes...even then...not a huge deal. He just needs to get his butt to Norman where he will be too busy with football to get into trouble.

This incident may not be that big a deal but if he's having trouble getting his grades up to graduate then it is a big deal. He should know what an opportunity he has and put his all into graduating and getting to Norman. Things like this is probably the reason he's border line failing his classes. For someone who's over 21 he's acting more like a high school prima donna.

We don't need CG because someone riding in the car with him made a comment about them being D1 athletes? I'm not sure that's reasonable.

  • That's 2 in 2.5 years....that's no big deal either? Yes, we've had athletes do this and worse and be allowed back, but if it's a trackrecord Stoops is less likely to be lenient. Just sayin....

  • Well this sounds like a clear cut case of “contempt of cop” to me. In those cases that I have seen the culprit ends up in jail for the night or until they can make bail but these cases seem to disappear at some point before they get to court. Here in Nevada we have just about every vise you can think of but be warned that you want to be real careful on your way from one vise to the next. Most of the cops here will tell you one time to do something and if you’re not fast enough you will find yourself hooked and booked other than being asked a second time.
I think folks just need to chill because saying to a cop “do you know who we are” isn’t a crime as defined by the Nevada Penal Code. I know when I was that age I learned a valuable lesson in how to talk to cops. I was hit by a guy that ran a stop sign on my way home from a drag race with a bunch of trophies in the back seat. When the cop ask me in that cop tone of voice “does you dad know you’re racing this car” and I replied “does you dad know you’re a cop” didn’t take me long to figure out that’s not the right answer. Age broadens your knowledge to the realization that “yes sir and no sir” are much better answers in those cases.
Let’s wait and see if this ever makes it to court before we start going off the deep end.

  • I don't see anyone "going off the deep end," and yes, Dusty almost beating his friend to death IS a worse act to be sure. However, TWO arrests in under 3 years? Now, come on.... Not to mention it's all going down when he has SIX CLASSES to finish before Summer to even make it to OU?

Not saying he's a bad guy, but if you don't think Bob Stoops is all over this then you're not thinking.

  • Being stupid enough to take on cops as a 21 year old out of state, is pretty significant despite the seriousness of the charge.

He better straighten up or NFL dollar signs will not be what they could have been. Get smarter son.

Hook I can sure go along with the fact that he needs to cover those six classes before he can get here is not a good thing. I don't think the two arrests, one for MIP and the other for being loud with a cop are that big of deals. I'm not saying it's a good thing to be picked up by the cops two times in 2 1/2 years I'm just saying what he was picked up for weren't that big of a deal.

He is from Reno so he wasn't out of state he was most likely just hanging with friends from high school while he went home for the weekend. It didn’t say he took on any cops it just said he got loud with them. Reno has a big gang problem these days and when they see 5 young guys in a car they are going to get checked out and the SO in that area are known to not play games. I’m more worried about him getting his class work in order than I am with this.
