  • Oklahoma Mourns Passing of Jerry Tubbs

Tubbs earned consensus football All-America honors in 1956 at Oklahoma.

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma was saddened to learn of the passing of Jerry Tubbs, who earned consensus football All-America honors in 1956.

Not only a great blocker, Tubbs established himself as one of the top pass defenders in the country with his three interceptions against Texas in 1955. During 1956, Tubbs was the first Sooner to receive the Walter Camp Award, given to the player of the year, and was also named Lineman of the Year by UPI.

After the Sooners soundly defeated the Maryland Terrapins in the 1956 Orange Bowl to win the national title, Miami Daily News writer Ralph Warner wrote: "Jerry Tubbs took the decision over Bob Pellegrini, the Maryland All-America, in the battle of the centers. Pellegrini was outstanding, but Tubbs was even more so with a brilliant all-around performance."

He was the third player taken in the 1957 draft by the Chicago Bears. He became the 12th Sooner player to be inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame on Dec. 10, 1996.

  • R.I.P. Jerry Tubbs.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this, he was one of my HERO's of OU back in the day; guys he was better than what you may hear about him; he was a legend in his own time, fearless and tough were defined by this man; he personified all that was good of OU football.......I just can't express what a loss we've had; no matter when or why, its just doesn't make it any easier to take when hearing of a loss like this........

I hope our guys today can play with even a smidgen of what he brought to the game, he's truly part of what makes our program a legend, he was a true legend builder teammate......

God Bless his soul and his family and friends

  • Thoughts and prayers are with his family. I know he's been battling health issues for quite awhile. Now he's in a better place. Thanks for being a great Sooner.

  • Thanks to posters, telling us about a time before some of us were able to watch OU football.

    Thoughts to his family.

Loved the comment about him playing in heaven.

  • I never missed a game during his time. He just might have been the best football player to ever play for OU. certainly in the top five. He also played some at fullback. Any way to keep him on the field.

  • Jerry was also one of the original Dallas Cowboys - the first of many Sooners to distinguish themselves in the silver and blue - and later became one of Tom Landry's most trusted assistant coaches.

  • Jerry Tubbs is a big reason why my dad became a big Dallas fan back in the 60's. They were just starting to get good as a franchise, and he was a big part of it getting better. I believe he was actually a player-coach in 1966, which I believe was his last season as an active player. We lived in No-Cal at the time, so it wasn't a big fad to be a Dallas Cowboys fan. But my dad sure was, and it was fun to buck the trend of 49er fan-dom at my grade school.

  • Putting together any All-Time OU Team, Jerry Tubbs would be a slam dunk first-teamer at either linebacker or center or both. And a real gentleman as well.

This says it. The '56 team was filled with legends, and Tubbs may have been the greatest. When you hear an announcer say, "Oklahoma, one of the storied programs....", Jerry Tubbs is one reason why it's true.

  • Mom sent me this note:

    Hi, John,

Jerry Tubbs died, the Oklahoman said today.

He used to sit in my office and chat while he was waiting for the Dept. Head.
    at OU Business Office.

I lost a friend today. He was 77 - younger that me, I had my degree when I knew him. He was so nice, just outstanding athlete, honorable, all the good things OU symbolizes.

    Love,

    Mom
