Some Random Thoughts on Yesterday's Games

  • 1) Texas-OK, I'll admit it. Maybe UT took a giant step backwards yesterday. Their defense is still pretty stout but they simply can't pass the ball worth a lick. Losing their top 3 running backs killed them. Still glad they lost. They were talking about a possible BCS bowl and winning out. I don't know about the BCS bowl but I did think they had a good chance to win out. I was wrong and I admit it.

    2) Texas Tech-This team has quit. People forget in all of the uproar of beating us and then promptly laying an egg 3 straight games-they had lost 2 at home BEFORE they beat us. That game will forever haunt OU. Although the OSU game might make everyone forget about that one.

    3) Baylor-Never out of a game with RG3. But how do you get that far behind-to Kansas? They'll be riding momentum this week. I really was hoping they would lose.

    4) Kansas-By far the worst team in the Big 12. (Tiny Ten) I see know way Gill keeps his job.

    5) Iowa St.-Off this week. OSU's next victim.

    6) KSU-Snyder is a coaching genious. They still won the game even with mistakes. You know what they are going to do and still do it anyway. Their QB is a horse. He's got to really be beat up but he seems to thrive on it. Our win over them looks better all the time. OSU was fortunate to get out of that one alive.

    7) OU-Off this week but clearly not the same team as they were at the first of the season. I hope the staff is making adjustments to compensate for the loss of Whaley and Broyles. Defense will have to step up the last 3 games especially against OSU. Might not matter anyway. OSU could easily score 35+ on OU just because they are on a roll and literally have a "veteran" QB.

    8) OSU-The class of the league as much as it pains me to say that. Weeden is playing at a pro level. Blackmon is a stud. Their offense appears to be unstoppable. I don't have enough confidence in BV to come up with a way to even slow them down. I hope he's trying though. 28 year old QB's are hard to confuse. Whatever folks have tried so far hasn't worked. Never thought I would see OSU playing for the NC. Of course I never thought I would see the Texas Rangers in 2 straight World Series either.

    9) Stanford-Luck and little else. Their defense simply doesn't have the athletes they need. I wasn't surprised that they got beat but was a little surprised by the margin. Turnovers are killers.

10)Boise-Great game that they let get away. If they don't fumble-they win. Credit TCU for coming back. Their QB is really pretty good and is only a sophomore. Patterson can flat out coach but I have sources close to their program who openly admit he is no the most popular guy around the other coaches. Won't get into details but let's just say he has an ENORMOUS ego. Let's see how they do in the Big 12. We owe those guys one.

I still think it will be LSU and OSU for the NC. Things have fallen right for OSU and LSU has little left. If they were playing at Arkansas-the Hogs might pull an upset. But it's at LSU where they never lose. SEC Championship Game? Much like last year's. It won't be close. It will be a huge buildup-Great offense vs Great defense. The key is the game is in New Orleans. We all know how that can be. I think OU takes care of business at Baylor (won't be easy though) and against ISU and likely will end up in the Fiesta Bowl against whomever. 10-2 and a BCS win is still a solid season. But everyone will wonder about the Tech game and the injury factor. That's just football.

  • The pressure will be all on OSWho. They will be puckered up real big. Gundy and the players never ever thought they would be in this position coming to OSWho. I am not saying they blow it and I am not saying they aren't the better team but we can beat them.

This Oklahoma team with Box,Broyles,Whaley really was good. Lets hope Heupel has figured out a way to replace Broyles by getting Hanna and Millard involved. We might have been progressing in the run game but is Whaley the only way we can be successful? Really disappointing if that is true.

I'm just not sure we can call a team that is 110th in the nation in total defense the "class of the league." Maybe they are, but I won't be convinced until Bedlam.

  • Would love to hear what you know about Patterson. He's not popular with what coaches? He does seem like a d!ck and I hope we destroy TCU more times than not. I hope TCU doesn't come into the Big XII and immediately start kicking arse.

  • "7. ......I hope the staff is making adjustments to compensate for the loss of Whaley and Broyles......"

Assuming your statement is not a joke, exactly what "adjustments" would you suggest? other than cloning Broyles and Whaley prior to their birth.

  • Skip, way too much respect for the sheep humpers. I do trust Venables and the OU defense to get stops. Huge, mind-altering pressure on Gundy and pukes.

You suggest OU replace Broyles-NCAA record setting slot receiver-with Hanna, a tight end and Millard a fullback getting more involved.
I get your point and agree with the idea, but no way can Broyles be replaced by utilizing those two--as good as they are at their positions they will not be able to compensate for the loss of Broyles. Defenses will surly be able to adjust to those two much quicker than they ever did to Broyles.

The key may be for someone (Franks?) to step into the slot and burn defenses enough that they have to adjust as if Broyles was (were? grammar cops take note) still there.
In addition, Finch must stay healthy and Belldozer must continue to improve and become a passing threat as well as just a short yardage runner.

I'm not suggesting that this is instead of using Hanna and Millard more, but I still believe it is critcal if Hanna and Millard are going to be successful in being utilized more.

I agree with SoonerPeace. I used to think the guy knew zilch, but my view has changed over time.

Texas win out? Who was talking about that other than Texas fans and alumni? Texas is bad. They might not win another game this year. I fully expect them to lose at least 2 of their remaining games.

I agree Jim. We are one week from K-state nearly beating them and now we are declaring them the class of the league. Worse yet, it appears many on this board have already thrown in the towell.

I agree. BV came up with a great game plan vs. UT and he will vs. the Humpers. We will be the ones to surprise a few people. Not OSWho.

    Cover 2

  • I have lived long enough, seeing 37 OU-OSU games, to know that the Cowgirls never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Every year they have played for it all (I recall '76, '84...somebody help me out here), they have choked.

I remember the dire predictions last year: the terrifying OSU offense would FIRE, FIRE AT WILL. Yet the D scheme worked! We had guys step up big.

I am confident OU will win.

    arkasoonerARKx0

  • I have seen a few games where, when someone full out blitzed Weeden and got to him, Weeden got shaken up a bit. He threw a few interceptions when pressured in a few games. OSU is better than they may have ever been, but they aren't invincible by any means. I am not underestimating the job it will be to go into Stillwater and beat them, but they are beatable. Can OU put together a game plan and execute to do it? Kansas State looked pretty good last week and we beat KSU...just sayin...

    soonerschooner

  • Nothing that Franks has done in the past suggests he is capable of lighting up OSU. I wish the frosh WR Jackson had more time in blowout games, because I think he more likely to make big plays vs their defense. Millard in the run game and Hanna in the middle can certainly help eat clock and that will be important vs the Cowboys.

    Great line. cool

If we had not turned the ball over last year, it would not have been as close.

    Jim Rockford

  • Well I dont if using Hannah and Millard more will (replace) broyles and Whaley but it was Hannah that had a looooong run after a catch last year that helped us win. Just sayin

    otrsooner

  • Take away Blackmon and Randle from OSU vs. OU minus Whaley and Broyles? Who would be better in that match up? I'm just saying. We were the better team before, and I still think it's close, just due to the craptacular defense they play. Gonna be a barnburner for sure in Stoolwater.

  • IMHO OU has to bring pressure in the middle of the line vs. Weeden. I hope I am wrong, but this seems to be the Aggies year.

    allgonzo

  • Skip over-estimates Baton Rouge by saying LSU "never loses at home".

The longest home winning streak in their history is 19.

I think 10 is good for 5th longest home streak for them.

Arkansas certainly has a punchers chance, especially since the game is not at night.

for the aggie fans they better do it this year because they've got no shot next year.

All the highly raked teams they've played we have also played and demolished.

That's what is so great about college football. In the history of football every player that has played has HAD to have that breakout game that got their name out there. Who is to say this weekend or next is not franks's day to set the college football world on fire? I know one thing for sure he has the talent to do just that. I for one hope he does.

  • Some nervous nellies on here. If you want to hear a nervous nellie talk to a polk fan. They know whats coming. The fact that our offense is morphing is the reason we win not the reason to worry. They dont know what to prepare for.

Remember Cam Kenney last year. He had gone almost his full 2 years as just an OK receiver that had problems catching the football. Then the last 4 games, it was like the light came on and he played awesome for us. Time for somebody else to pull a Cam Kenney.
