Signed only two from OK

  • Well three if you count Taylor. Any thoughts? I remember I termed those staunch supporters of Oklahoma-grown kids from the previous board, and the one before that. Roll call?

I echo my thoughts from years past...really doesn't matter to me where they come from.

...most of the time on LandThieves now.

  • With Hughes and Hollis, it is six.

  • With the walk-ons that actually pretty high per capita. We usually don't get many more than that with a class of 25-27. Out of 17 or so that isn't really less percentage wise. IMO I agree- they're all Oklahomans now- at least for 4, or 5 years.

I assume you mean Nathan Hughes and he is from Spring, Texas. The only two signed LOI for football for OU were Kendall Thompson and Dylan Dismuke. Other Oklahoma kids that are coming to OU are Archie Bradley, Londell Taylor, and Greg Offenburger.

Nathan is probably the wrong Hughes.

Edison tight end John-Philip Hughes is walking on so I think he is the right Hughes.

The Hollis he mentioned is Hughes' Edison teammate and close friend, offensive tackle Robert Hollis who will also be a walk on at OU. Now whether Hollis will be a preferred walk on I have no idea but it sounds like Hughes will be a preferred walk on.

  • I remember Barry S saying that he recruited too national for a bit and got away from kids form Okla and texas and that while they were great players they didn't grow up loving OU or hating Texas and it contributed to his swoon it the early 80's. He said OU needs to have players from okla and texas as its base and sprinkle in Super Talent every once in a while.

Not sure if that is still true we will see as Stoops and OU seem to have made a concerted effort to expand nationally to find players.. Vegas, San Diego(sp), NM, Fla, Kan, SD, Missouri, LA, Ark, etc..

  • IMHO Stoops does a great job getting the best kids for the program regardless of where they are at. As a fan, I always hope the OK kids get a strong look. I am confident they have and the recruiting class is the best for the program. OU will continue to recruit the best kids in OK. With something like 4 million people in the state, the sheer numbers pale in comparison with other states, specifically with Texas 25 million people.

  • I'll put it this way if OU was signing 10-15 Oklahoma kids every year they wouldn't be winning all the games they do. Oklahoma just doesn't produce a lot of top end talent. I'd say on average about 5 Oklahoma kids a year are good enough to play at OU and some years there are more than 5 and other years there are less than 5. It's a small state just how it is.

Barry didn't recruit under the 25/85 rule either. I like to see Oklahoma kids at OU but I also understand recruiting limitations. I don't think I would want to miss out on another Demarco Murray, Landry Jones, or Quinton Carter just because they aren't from Oklahoma or Texas.

  • You have to recruit for base available talent to fill the positions needed regardless of proximity. If it's a match from both ends with the interest then the process goes to a more intense recruiting that hopefully ends up with a offer extended...then a commitment then ultimately the signed LOI...But were they are from if talented enough has nothing to do with it other than to gage the interest & the possibilities of getting him to sign. & Switzer philosphy was sign them all to prevent them from going somewhere else & playing against them...PERIOD..In that time the NCAA had no limits on the # of schollies per team...so the top programs that had the money...gobbled up most of the talent... Because of the new rules...more talent spreaded out...

  • I totally disagree with the post about we shouldn't go after "national players." AND this is no new phenomena- Stoops has brought in a sprinkling of national talent since day 1.
Duke Robinson, Akeem Millington (both 4 stars), Eldridge, Austin English, CJ Ahyou (transfer from BYU), Demarco Murray, Landry Jones, Jon Cooper, Josh Jarboe (a character bust), the two JUCO LBs from California (one of whom was really good for us), Caleb, Brandon Walker, Quinton Carter, good Lord I could go on all day.

So yes, I disagree completely with your premise TyreSooner.

  • It was not my premiss it was something BS had said in the 80's. If you had bothered to read the whole thing you would have read that I stated "not sure if it is still true." I am glad we get great players from anywhere.

I was repeating BS stance not my own so you disagree with Barry Switzer's premiss...

  • I for one am all for the national recruiting that Bob focuses on. BUT, look back at our MNC teams. THEY ARE LOADED WITH OKLAHOMA HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS (even walk ons)! As odd as it is on paper, there is something to having a team with die hard OKIES that wanna beat the hell out of everyone (especially Texass)!

I accidentally voted you down when trying to vote you up.

Barry was talking about the year he recruited five RBs to feed the wishbone. If you look at this roster

    http://www.soonerstats.com/football/players/roster.cfm?SeasonID=1981

you'll see several national recruits at RB or FB or HB. Most were ok to good, but you'll also notice freshman Donald "Turkey" Brown from Annapolis, MD. If you check the next year's roster you'll not find his name. I don't want to single him out - it's just my bad memory - but year after year we'd sign someone from Washington, DC or Detroit or Colorado (Alvin Ross, Donald Simcik) and the very NUMBER of RBs needed for the wishbone eroded the quality of players at the other positions. It wasn't just the number, which was then unlimited, but the TIME it took to woo them that took away from getting better players elsewhere.

To be fair, there were just as many busts from Texas as anywhere else.
