SWC question?

  • I'm curious to see if anyone remembers why the Southwest conference broke up. I remember that Arkansas bolted to the SEC and it fell apart.

My question is really that it seems to me that Arkansas left because Texas got greedy then kind of like what is happening now. Can any people on the board tonight comment on this? It seems like the same situation again.

I'd appreciate some of the long memories here.

  • It was mainly due to all the teams in the conference being on some form of NCAA probation which in effect hurt the revenue stream of the conference from teams not being on T.V., not playing in Bowl games, etc. The SMU ordeal didn't help things either and in regards to Arkansas, they felt as an outsider with all the other Texas schools and bolted for the SEC. The SMU documentary actually explains some of it.

  • I memory serves me right, the Big 8 wanted TCU and not Baylor. At the time, Ann Richards was the governor of Texas and a Baylor grad and pulled the strings to have Baylor in the Big 12.

  • The old SWC had a long and storied past. Some very fine teams. UT had a thing about Houston and kept blocking their entrance.

The very first year of formation (1915) OU was an original member and had a very good year, winning the conference. Went 10-0 and defeated UT 14-13.

Arky might want to take a long look at the Big XII. New TV package coming up - that is if ESPN and Fox stay solid with the conference TV plan. Arkansas would have better pickings in recruiting in Texas and get away from the cesspool that is the SEC.

If OU goes to the Pac-10, the eastern division may not be as hard on travel as having to go all the way to the coast.

Gonna be interesting and it looks like OU holds most of the cards for its own future. Pres Boren, Joe C, and coach Stoops are an iron clad team that will swing a lot of weight.

  • It was cut throat down here. As the above posters said, Arkansas jumped for the money and were tired of being left out of decisions since they were the only non-Texas school. As TV money got bigger, attendance at the SWC schools (all but A@M, UT and Tech were small) shrunk. The SMU death penalty and several teams on probation basically did them in along with losing top recruits to out of state schools. And the winner of the conference? Got to play in the Cotton Bowl! That is the one thing I've always hated about the Big 12. It basically saved the 4 Texas schools who joined and has been a windfall for Baylor. NO WAY they would have been able to upgrade their facilities without the Big 12.
