Remember David Oku?

  • Per ESPN:

JONESBORO, Ark. -- Former Tennessee tailback David Oku has signed with Arkansas State.

ASU coach Gus Malzahn announced the signing of the former standout from Midwest City, Okla., on Wednesday.

Sports information director Jerry Scott said Oku will have two years of eligibility remaining and can play immediately because he sat out the 2011 season.

Oku led Tennessee in kickoff returns and return yardage as a freshman and sophomore but announced plans to transfer in January 2011 after dropping on the Volunteers' depth chart at tailback.

    Former is right.
Where would you rather like to be, backup at OU or playing at Ark St?

Also, had some off the field legal problems. Probably best that we missed out on him!

As I also recall, he wasn't very complimentary of OU and was very arrogant about the decision not to sign with us.

  • Good Luck to Mr Oku......

  • Yea this was a good one to not get for several reasons . Not a bad return man as i remember.

  • Yeah, he pouted OU did not recruit him hard enough and that OU went after another back.. therefore, started dogging OU. Looks like OU knew what they were doing.. Shocking!

I'm hell when I'm well.. And, I am never sick!

  • It doesn't take very long to figure out what these youngmen are about if you pay attention. It is not highschool coaches or parents or guardians that hide all the potential problem childern...it's their talent...Coaches know..they are basically walking psychiatrist with tons of case studies and relative experience..coaches roll the dice because we demand wins...and they sometimes get burned.

Coaches have much more info to work with than those of us who see someone on the football field and not what they are doing (or not doing) in the classroom or off the field. And you're right about rolling the dice and they all get burned at one time or another.

  • No need to pile on the young man. I wish him well. He is from OK and I would love to see him succeed. The fact is he will be with a great coach and probably a pretty fun offense to play in. Good luck David! We hope you succeed!!!

  • Did our former would-be starter TE transfer there too?

not meaning to pile on..most everyone makes mistakes...and most everyone gets a second chance. Standing where I stand that is real life. I wholeheartedly agree with your post. I hope the youngman takes advantage of this new opportunity and lives a prosperous and long life. My comment was not directed at the youngman but at the adults that because of the youngman's talents look the other way instead of giving the guidance and correction to increase his chance for success. Filling his head with tales of stardom and singing his praises when they really need to be a selfless mentor, instead of an agent.

I think Haywood transferred to Central Arkansas.

Central Arkansas the hotbed of football in America. Switzer used to say it is a short walk from the palace to the outhouse. Do these kids never learn.

  • i was in jonesboro today and yesterday doing business. Oku's name came up and to my surprise there really wasn't much fan fare.
the one thing in his favor is that the incoming RB is having some off the field issues as well. I think David will do pretty well in malzahn's offensive scheme.
