Quick information from Canyoneer

  • Although work and school prohibits me from posting much now (lack of time) I wanted to give a couple of updates from Canyoneer ...

    1) Although Canyoneer didn't coach in the JUCO conference where Chaz Neslon played, he knows several of the coaches and talks to them once in a while. He was aware of the growing relationship of OU and Chaz over the last few weeks, and has heard nothing but great things about Chaz. Chaz was the MVP of the conference for a reason, and his 40 time of 4.6 is accurate. He is VERY fast and quick, and goes around 235..and by recruiting him OU gets a kid who can drop back as a hybrid and speed rush a Qb. He thinks Chaz will certainly be in the 3-4 man DE rotation next year, and will see a lot of time when they play option Qb's.....He is ALL business, hard worker, and will help a team which has recently had to deal with some internal issues, including some prima donnas. He is definitely OU good.

    2) With Bowman and Everett a lot is going to depend on OU's trip to see their families....especially for Bowman. Canyoneer would not be at all surprised to see a commitment by Everett in the next few days to OU. Bowman could follow, but USC is really putting the pressure on him, and LA is abuzz with the USC massacre of UCLA (fire that coach, please)....Everett is a very good one on one DB and Bowman is a Jefferson, with more size and speed,

If OU got Bowman, Everett and with the commitment of Nelson they would get more speed, 3 very hard hitters, and most of all some maturity. All three are committed to try to get to the next level, and they would see playing for OU as a business decision and, unlike some highly recruited players around, do not feel a sense of entitlement. And I think Stoops is sick of babysitting some players this year.

    3) With Jackson (TE-JUCO), and Woods, well, they basically froze to death...and that isn't a good thing. Dad was surprised that OU didn't try harder to get them in earlier...but it is difficult to get kids in during a regular season. It has always been problematic in the cold country to have kids come to games during a Thanksgiving weekend, no girls on campus, freezing weather, smaller crowds...etc. Dad visited Nebraska years ago (as I tell him, pre Civil War) in November, and said it was the most miserable weekend he could remember..and couldn't wait to get back to Cali and 75 degrees. Counted the hours. Dad thinks OU has a fairly good chance with Woods (a great player) and less of a chance with Jackson (a good player). He thinks Jackson will go south.

    4) OUI insider does a heck of a job covering these, and other, recruitment's in Canyoneers opinion.

    5) related news...ASU Erickson is done...and he will probably retire. Sumlin is being talked about to replace him, as well as coach V, and Diaz....Leach would love to have the job, but pay would be an issue there. Canyoneer thinks it could be Sumlin, important people at ASU love the guy. At the UA, RR has a QB already on campus who can run his offense perfectly, Scott, and walked into a nice situation since the UA will have a nice group of offensive skill players coming back.

    Now back to work

  • Thanks for the input Mark. Always like reading your and your dad's comments.

    JetDoc

  • Sorry, I'm a little slow. Several references to "prima donnas" and Stoops baby setting some player(s).

Anyone, have an idea about whom he might be speaking?

    SoonerNM

  • This has been hinted about on the message boards for awhile. I hope the staff can fix these attitudes, if not show them the door Amed Kabba style!

    Mysterio1

  • Mark - thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to pass along the comments. I always enjoy the read very much.

  • Thanks Mark! I always enjoy reading your posts and it is a pleasure to listen to your dad's insight!

  • Thanks, Mark. I HATE that the weather was so bad and these guys came in over Thanksgiving weekend. Rarely do we have horrible weather like that during football season, but Saturday was just awful. Hope we get some of them.

  • OU is recruiting Defensive ends, corners and safeties out of Jr College, bad sign. To me it means they don't have any confidence in who they have on campus. I do not like Jr College kids, you have to be right on the pick because to help you they must play immediately. By my calculations OU gets results on about one out of every three juco recruits bad odds. Kenny has been used as an example of someone who OU got from juco who really helped. Think back, Kenny was a bust early, then came back somewhat and then had a monster last few games. Overall did he help from the get go?
Another possibility is the coaches know there will be additional exits by currents scholarship players making room for more scholarships this year then originally identified. James give us some insight here, please.

I agree, been seeing stuff like this alluded to on other posts.

We did the calc's over the last 5 years or so and JUCO recruiting was a better hit/miss ratio (almost 50%) than h.s. kids ( < 50%). We didn't take Sims or the MLB Mike ___ into consideration since they never strapped it on for OU (eligibility issues).

  • Mark, Thank you. And please thank your dad.

    Good luck with your work.

We lose Fleming and it is 50/50 Hurst leaves. Colvin they want to move back to corner and Harris will be back at safety. They definitely need more bodies there. Ronnell and Frank are gone so there are 2 DE's to replace. I am okay with Harris next year and I hope Tony Jefferson. Colvin and Hurst would make a good group if Hurst stays. Lets face it the defensive ends have bailed us out this year. Next year is a huge question mark on defense. No question we felt more confident in this years team before the season than we will next year. If Landry comes back and we get some of these recruits like Mario and DGB to go with Shepherd and Neal and we could still contend. No Landry and no Mario or DGB we are fighting for the top 10. Lots of question marks for OSWho and Texas at least offensively. But let me make things clear Gray is one fine running back and Texas is slowly molding a team that can play with the SEC. If they had a QB they would be formidable.

I have seen numerous references to these "prima donnas" but like you have absolutely no idea who they are referring to. Everyone else seems to be in the know. I realize the problem with mentioning names, but I sure would like to know who everyone is referring to.

  • I agree BigDeazy, what is the big hush hush. I can tell that the last few weeks and it is not just the injury's that the team is flat.

    OUSMAG

  • There have been some references to the "California Trio". Also, you can see who hasn't been playing or has had off the field issues to see who they might be talking about. Funny, only one of those is on defense. Must be some others.

    SKIPinKELLER

  • Only good things can come of their names being made public in my opinion. Maybe that would humble them!

He sure didn't sound that way in interviews last year. In fact, he sounded much the opposite. I fear he's right, but it's a surprise to me!
