Quarterback change??

  • When Dom Whaley fumbled against FA&M, he sat out until the 4th quarter. When Washington jumped offsides yesterday, I didn't see him on the field for several possessions. Not to completely throw Landry under the bus, but what does a QB have to do to get removed from a game?? I know he is a senior, but when a guy is playing rattled, what prevents us from pulling him for a few possessions? He hasn't played well all season, why not give Bell a couple series, and see what he can do? I am not a fan of the two QB system, but c'mon, could Bell have been much worse? Who knows, maybe the team responds and Bell leads us to victory...maybe he comes in and we go 3 and out a few times. We won't know if we don't try.
I guess I am just saying that when other positions screw up, they get pulled, so why not the QB. And I'm not saying pull them after one bad play, but when you can tell they just are playing poorly overall.

  • Won't happen. Once the coaches make a decision nothing can change it. Personally I would like for Bell to run a few series (2 or 3 a game) to prepare him for the future.

  • It can't hurt. Landry is regressing and panics when pressured. Looked like a high school QB last night. OSU redux.

  • Bell fumbled as well. Going to run out of QB's if you set them down after a mistake, they handle the ball about 80 times a game. What we need to do is game plan better, they were never comfortable or in sync the whole game.

That is why I said you don't pull them because of one or two mistakes. You pull them for overall poor play.

  • BS .... Landry didn't fumble once he fumbled 3 times (we got lucky and recovered one and had one given back to us by the refs) and one of his fumbles was for 7 points QUIT MAKING EXCUSES FOR JONES.
I'm fed up with everyone pampering him. he makes mistakes constantly and never gets the blame. And the former poster is absolutely correct. other players get pulled and sometimes don't see the field again for the same mistakes jones makes yet he is never pulled. As a matter of fact I am surprised stoops doesn't bench the players "around" Landry because they usually get called out when he struggles.

Completely agree. For change of pace, something else for the defense to plan for, for a new look, for experience, to even send a message, there would be a number of reasons to bring in BB for 2-3 series I a row. I would do it at a home game which would not be till mid-October.

  • I always thought the qualities that a quarterback needs are leadership, character, work ethic, drive, the ability to inspire your teammates and cause them to believe that he will lead them regardless of the situation, etc. It seems that arm strength and the passing mechanics are not as important as the mental part of the game. The really good quarterbacks I remember all had the toughness and spunk. Maybe Landry has it but it doesn't show. I remember a sideline reporter saying in the Iowa bowl game that Landry went over and was talking to his teammates on the sidelines while the defense was on the field. The reporter said that was the first time all season he had seen Landry speak to his teammates. I don't know how you instill that type of character in a player, but your quarterback must have it.

  • I would love to have a change at QB but don't think Bell is close to ready for this.

  • Skip past Landry, Bell, and Allen and go with Thompson. The players say he's ready and awesome!

lol Oh come on. So where did these players say he was ready to go? I would like to read that.

  • Before he went insane, I always liked what Petrino did at Louisville. In the 2nd qtr, the back-up always got 2 series. Number 1 it gave them experience and it helped the starter see the game better by watching the defense from the side line. He did that even when the backup was a true freshman.

  • Will never happen; that is called 'change' something Stoops will never consider because it might be interpreted that he was initially wrong.

  • Landry has regressed-I think we all agree on that. But does anyone really think Blake Bell is ready? I've seen him throw 2 passes last year-1 badly overthrown and 1 intercepted. Plus, he fumbled a snap in the Belldozer. He also got sacked twice against Florida A&M. We will live or die with Landry Jones.

.....might disagree with you on this one. If the wheels do come off and we're headed for a .500 season, or worse, to hell with lj's draft status. Put bell in for the game experience and perhaps others as well........get ready for next year with what we've got.

Skip in the last game before K-State, Blake did get a few reps in and hit 4 of 5 passing, that was with the backups on the O-Line, it looked like they only let him pass on 3rd downs, it's hard to judge anybody in a mop-up role especially with an inferior opponent, but he really looked good. I do agree that it's very doubtful he would be ready. But let's face it, that's not going to happen as long as Landry is healthy.

As much as I like Landry and Bell, I love Kendall Thompson. He has all the moves his dad had with more size and more speed. He also has a better arm. Coaches and players alike have raved about him lighting up the defense when he's in practice. Very hard to contain. I think the change in the offense needs to go to a dual threat QB. • No matter what people say, barring injury, Landry will be our QB this season. So the coaches need to put him in a position that utilizes his strengths and puts him in a position to succeed. It's clear to all that Landry is not very good under pressure. Every team we play is going to come after him and try to exploit that. We have got to give him time or force the defense to stay home and not blitz. We can do this by establishing the run. We have the best fullback in the league and Williams has shown he is a game changer, USE THEM!!!! This will set up play action as well. Also, use the quick passing game. Give him throws that build confidence and put the ball in the hands of our many play makers. I think our line will be good in time, but with the injuries people are going to get pressure on us if we are predictable and hold the ball too long. Last, Whitney needs to cut him off for a week everytime he turns the ball over. We are not good enough to lose the turn over battle, take care of the d@&^ football......JMO

  • Wrong,Kendall Thompson does not have more speed than his dad. His dad was a 4.4 guy Kendall a 4.7 guy

    ouzena

  • Switzer was quoted in the Oklahoman as being very high on Thompson. He said he was surprised that Thompson hadn't transferred because he could be starting for a lot of teams.

Kendall is a good kid and I think the same of his dad. Kendall has a good arm and is very accurate, BUT your wrong about the speed, Charles had a set of wheels, Kendall isn't even in the same class speed wise. If your argument is for a duel threat quarterback how could you go wrong with Blake Bell 6'6" 265lbs, he could carry a few DB with him on every play. Regardless of what we think, Its sink or swim with Landry, that's not going to change as long as he stays healthy IMO.

  • When do we start to look at the future? Bell needs the reps because we all know with this team we need to start focusing on next season and beyond.
