Post Spring Practice QB Wondering

  • I hope not, but I wonder if we'll lose a QB. After yesterday I'm sure they all have an idea of their position on the depth chart. Obviously not Jones or Bell, but you have to wonder about Drew. He must love OU, but if passed up by an underclassman...

  • Good question, I still think Drew is number 2, but the Bell hype might push him into number 2. I just don't know if he can pass well enough? JMO.

Maybe there's enough uncertainty to keep both Allen and Bell here. I'm not sure if either QB really separated themselves when you look at both practices and the scrimmages (i.e. not just the Spring game). However, one of them (Allen?) may force the issue by asking the coaches if he thinks he might have a better opportunity elsewhere.

I remember this topic coming up before the Spring, with James responding. I looked back and found his response (below).

"Allen will know exactly where he stands after spring football. If he comes out of spring and is still ahead of Bell and feels that he has the ability to stay that way then he would be better off to stay and start for one year at OU then transfer to a lower division school and start for two.

However, if Bell does gain on him and come out of the spring as a co back-up then he would have something to think about, because that would mean that with both training and doing the same thing that Bell is improving more and gaining in the QB talent department. That would mean that he would never be the starter at OU.

I want to point out that both can run the ball and if Allen was running the Bell Dozer package the package would have a new name, but he would be running it almost as well.

Also with Bell how much does he enjoy being an Oklahoma Sooner? If he loves it at OU, and it appears that he does, then it doesn't matter what happens on the field he will stay at OU, continue to try improve as a quarterback and take his chances in the NFL. At quarterback in the NFL quarterbacks come from all walks of life and if you have talent, and he does, then he will get a chance to play quarterback in the NFL."

  • Drew has a problem. First of all, he's a junior and LJ has the team this year. I can't see the coaching staff wanting to promote a one and done QB. That's also why Drew will not leave OU. His only hope to run the team, would be due to a series of injuries. Kendrick Thompson run the team with a great deal of poise and I personally think he'll be leading Drew in time. Also, OU has a QB coming in from Texas that might trump them all in the next year or two.

  • I just have a gut feeling that neither Allen or Bell are the cut and run types. They are a little different sort of person than most of the ones we have seen bail. Besides, Allen would have to go to a lower division team as he will only have one year if he doesn't opt out this Spring. Bell, just doesn't talk like a kid who would consider transferring from OU.

My gut just doesn't tell me that we will lose either of Bell or Allen. If Allen doesn't get the starters job next Spring he could go to a lower division team, but I doubt that he would do that. Listening to him talk just makes me think he is here for the duration.

  • I agree with you Roy.

  • I think if we have to name a starter tomorrow in place of LJ, we would have to go with dual QBs. Drew will be in for passing downs and Bell for short distance downs. Thompson hasn't got any playtime yet so he won't be starter anytime soon.

  • Freshmen do NOT run an OU team well. That's why freshmen QBs should almost NEVER play. If it takes a Safety at least one year and usually two to even remotely understand our defense then there is no way in he!! that a freshman QB can.

The coaches have said there was no separation so that pretty well shuts the door IMO. It could be either one at this point. I'm betting they both see action this year and if Landry is hurt? I don't think the coaches have made that decision.

Kendall may be a guy of the future, but IMO he won't beat out Drew, or Blake next year. JMHO

I agree with Hook. Very little separation b/w Allen and Bell. Thompson is not going to beat either out in '12 or '13...NO WAY. After '13, I don't know. It depends on if Bell stays and how he plays when he is given the reins.
