DES MOINES, Iowa – University of Oklahoma junior Tia Brooks won her first NCAA women’s outdoor shot put title Friday evening at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Brooks entered the finals with the semifinals best mark and extended her lead on her fourth attempt with a throw of 60-feet, six inches.
Brooks won the indoor national title in March and is the first Sooner to win an outdoor national title in the event. She joins teammate Brittany Borman as the only OU females to win national titles in field events. Brooks is the 12th student-athlete to sweep in the indoor and outdoor titles in the same season and this year marks fourth straight to have the same winner in both. The last two to accomplish that feat were Arizona’s Julie Labonte (2011) and Florida’s Mariam Kevkhishvili (2009, 2010).
Brooks swept the Big 12 Conference titles in the event this year and earned her second consecutive outdoor first team All-America honor. She was the outdoor runner-up a year ago.
Brooks bested a tough field of competitors, including runner-up Brittany Smith of Illinois State (58-4.75) and third-place finisher Jeneva McCall of Southern Illinois (57-11.75). It was her second time to win at Drake Stadium this year with a mark of 18.00-plus meters. Brooks set her Oklahoma program record mark of 60-7.25 (18.47) at the venue during the Drake Relays earlier this year.
George Alex finished out his career with a ninth-place finish in the men’s 5,000-meter run. Alex closed strong to finish in 13 minutes, 57.84 seconds. Friday evening marked Alex’s first appearance at the NCAA Championship in his career. He doubled at the Big 12 Championships, winning both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs.
Oklahoma’s women were in third with 24 points with 14 of 21 events scored through the third day of action. All 24 of OU’s points were scored in field events as Brooks and Borman won national titles in the shot put and javelin, respectively. Alex Acker finished fifth in the pole vault on Wednesday.
