OU-Texas staying in Dallas through 2020 - AP

  • Red River Rivalry: OU-Texas staying in Dallas through 2020

Schools sign agreement to keep game at the Cotton Bowl. The Dallas City Council has approved money for renovations to the stadium.

DALLAS — The Texas-Oklahoma football game will remain at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas through 2020.

Representatives from both universities on Friday signed an agreement that will keep the annual game in Dallas, where it is played amid the sights, sounds and smells of the Texas State Fair before a roughly equal number of screaming fans wearing burnt orange and crimson and cream.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said the rivalry is one of the top 10 in college football and that “Dallas is very proud to stay host to this 100-year-plus tradition.”

The City Council has approved millions of dollars in renovations

  • Well, okay! Much more atmosphere and certainly tradition than Jerry's world. That day may come sometime, yet in my humble opinion, the cotton bowl is unique and the other place will dilute the attraction of the rivalry.

You have your setiments and that is fine; however, this is a modern world. Old vs new and the tradition is the game itself. I believe players want to be in the "glory" that the newer facility provides. The recruit draw is important. If you want a greasy corn dog, go to HEB! Sorry JMHO

How does the facility provide any glory?

  • I think it will go to home and home before it ever goes to Jerryworld. Jerry's season ticket bondholders are guaranteed first ticket rights to every event in that stadium. Which means longtime Sooner and shorthorn doners would be forced out of their prime seat locations. Joe and Boren would never let that happen.
In my opinion, unless that changes, Jerryworld is never an option.

  • I don't favor JerryWorld at all. I went to one game there and had enough of his $35 parking, $14 hamburgers & $9 beer. And the seats are so far away from the field there is no college game atmosphere. The acoustics were terrible. We couldn't even hear the band play (just a echo occasionally). A friend said it took him an hour to get out of the parking lot. No thanks. If it moves there, I'll watch it on TV.

  • I like the tradition and enjoy going to the CB. That said Dallas sealed their fate when they didn't work with Jerry to build the new cowboy stadium in the fairgrounds. It's only a matter of time before the game leaves for Jerry world or home and home.
Cowboy stadium will get a spot in the national championship game rotation. Wait and see.

I agree with you about the NC/playoff game rotation.
But the OU/texas game won't move there. IMO

Totally disagree. I always wonder about people's belief that a new fancy stadium is somehow a significant factor. It's not. On the list of factors playing into where the RRS will be played, JerryWorlds price tag and giant TV are WAAAY down near the bottom. On top of that, by the time 2020 rolls around JerryWorld will be about 13 or 14 years old. I'm sure it will still be nice, but any remaining trickle of interest in playing the RRS in the newest and fanciest stadium will have long dried up by then.

The list of people who want the game moved has really dwindled down to the media because the CB press box apparently sucks and people who want a doned stadium to sit in. The press box issue will get resolved in the next set of renovations. The pro-domed stadium crowd doesn't have a monetarily sound argument on their side, which basically renders them silent. It is basically a question of money.

There is nothing close to a convincing argument that JerryWorld will result in more money. Once you factor in the loss of 12,000 seats and Jerry Jones' cut of the revenue for letting the game be played at his stadium you're already in a hole compared to the revenue that is generated at the Cotton Bowl. Then you look at TV viewership. Does anyone really think that more people will tune in to watch the game if it is played at JerryWorld? How many potential viewers are out there saying to themselves "I'm not watching that game if it's not played at Cowboys Stadium!" On top of that, the Texas State Fair would take a huge hit in terms of revenue. As has been made quite clear, the people affected by that (i.e. the City of Dallas" are quite willing to go to great lengths to avoid such a loss. I am pretty sure most people who were at all interested noticed that, when additional upgrades were demanded to extend the RRS contracts with the CB, it did not take long for the approvals to be handed down. A similar series of events is likely when the 2020 agreement is up for renewal.

On top of all that, there is also the issue of who gets to sit in the nicest seats, as another poster mentioned and explained.

Finally, niether school has, to date, shown any real interest in a home-and-home arrangement, and likely never will.

Short of the CB stadium getting destroyed by a tornado or condemned, the RRS isn't going anywhere.

  • I agree with the statements regarding Jerry world and keeping the game in the CB but my opinion comes from thinking that the amount of revenue required to keep OU/Texas will be beyond a stadium that has basically one real game there a year.

The stadium will not be required to produce that revenue on its own. The city of Dallas stepped up rather quickly to make sure the game stayed at the CB to pave the way for the most recent extension. With all the money spent on the last set of renovations (including closing in the upper deck etc.) and then the impending set of renovations that the City of Dallas already approved, there's no way they can let the game go just 8 years later. They're basically committed and locked in.

  • I love the game being in the CB! The fair going on around the game I think help makes it unique. I think there would be to many problems in trying to move the game to jerry's world. If we leave the CB I'd just as soon go to a home and home.

  • Since money drives everything these days, I read an interesting comment in a DMN article over the weekend that noted OU and ut each make more off the game staying in Dallas than either would make if the series were to become home-and-home.

  • Glad to see the game staying at the CB. This will be 45th straight year that my wife and I have attended the OU/tx game. I attended my first OU/tx game in 1946 and hope to see my last OU/tx game(whenever that may be) in the CB. biggrin
