  • James I don’t usually question your articles but after reading this one I have a lot more questions than I do answers. In this article you spent most of your time outlining the offensive side of the ball. You also make it sound like everybody from coaches down on this team was shocked that this team moved the ball on them like they did. When in fact TT is a team that is only averaging only 340 YPG put 452 passing yards up when they played us. A&M torched us for 379 yards in their game. Now you say that Baylor who is averaging 370 passing yards a game puts up 485 yards when they play us and everybody is shocked.
You know we weren’t supposed to be a team trying to get bowl eligible we were supposed to be a team trying to get the stars to align just right so we could get to a National Championship Game. I’m sorry but our defensive backfield in the last few games is so far from championship quality as anything I’ve seen in a long time. We really didn’t do anything different in this game than we have done in the last few games. The difference in this game is that we ran into a few skill players that had to talent to take it to another level play after play. Which leads to the question “what are the next two game going to look like”? Over the next two week we will not only face the best offensive teams we will face all year we will face the team that beat them.
We haven’t looked like the same defense since the Florida St game. In that game we were playing some real good defense for that early in the season. We played on edge and with a chip on our shoulder. I don’t know what happened after that but I don’t think we’ve played with that intensity since.
Don’t get me wrong I’m a proud Sooner whether we are 5-6 and trying to get to a bowl game or we are undefeated looking for a NCG. If the players are giving their best effort that’s all that can be ask of them. When the Coaches are putting those players in the best position to win that’s all you can ask for. The problem for me is when you have blue chip players that are supposed to be honing their skills for the next level are not playing to their potential. It’s kind of like the part of your article that talks about a player standing there looking at a fumbled ball on the ground. You gave him a pass because of his youth. James this young man is in college, he has been playing football I would guess for about the last ten years and I will guaranty you since he was eight in youth football his coaches have been teaching him to cover a fumble. We have just been having way too many of those shell shocked moments from far too many of our guys.
I don’t think the question for the rest of the year is going to be whether we can win or not. I think the question is going to be can we play to our potential. Can we get back to fundamentally sound football in the basics of the game? I know we have had far more than our share of injuries and we aren’t going to field the same team we thought we would have on the field at the start of the season. But that’s not an excuse to not play fundamentally sound to our potential.

  • Venables is a pathetic DC. he is good for two or three games a year. I have a suspicion that Bob plays a bigger role in the texAss and games where the talent is equal.

venables can't even come up with a scheme against zone read teams with half the talent.

He needs to be demoted plain and simple.

Lets get off of this hybrid crap and go back to traditional LBs, CB and safeties.

Thanks to venables we now have to watch the SEC win another national championship.

Since we avg two to three losses a year since venables was promoted we might as well play in the SEC.

  • The DB are awful! No DT consistent push/play. They are not the Sharks more like guppies! Most overrated defense in Stoops history. They have 3 solid players.. 1. Frank Alexander 2. Ronnell Lewis(now gone) 3. Travis Lewsi(not 100%)
Marginal players. 1. Tony Jefferson(his productivity has dramatically dropped off) 2. Wort(has moments) 3. Hust/Flemming(avg at best) The rest of the DB and DL is sub par and not OU quality.

On offense... we have become just about an all pass team.. no balance. Why in the hell Trey Millard is not in on every play is beyond me.. he should be getting 20+ carries a game as he is the only power back OU has. Finch is nice but spins and get 2 yards. Fall down Clay get knocked down after someone breathes on him.
The OL... has its moments then falls asleep.

MOST OVERRATED STOOPS TEAM! Preseason #1 and lose to TT at home and then Baylor is unacceptable!
OU's team and coaches get up for one game a year Texas... after that they coast and walk on the field and say... we are OU fall down look at what OU did in the past! See our ramp with all our NC... scared yet?
I never see Bama or LSU lost to soft teams.. when they do lose it with a ranked team and respectable game.
