OU-Iowa Report Card

  • I hate to be a Negative Nellie on this first day of a new year, but seeing this Oklahoma football team play in a December bowl game made me sad. From pre-season #1 to not even in the top 10. From national championship chatter to playing opening act on the same field their little brother would later be headlining a major game in the REAL bowl season. Playing in their third straight lesser bowl game slash lesser opponent. Not what anyone envisioned for the 2011 Sooners.

It was intriguing to see how OU would come out after laying down in the final regular season game and with all the defections and internal dissension dominating the pre-game conversation. To their credit, the Sooners played hard, if not always well, and showed signs that the time off had invigorated at least a few of the key players who had suffered through injuries during the season.

The bizarre thing was, despite the fact that OU had the game in hand, in the fourth quarter, you started wondering if Tress Way would be the game's MVP. Oklahoma was outgained, ran 20 fewer plays, had no one with impressive stats and it took a 4th down play when they were running out the clock to seal the honor for their backup quarterback.

    Quarterback

Blake Bell took the Sooners to two red zone scores and had the game's longest run on his third touchdown. The Bell Dozer was near perfect, save for the questionable third down call to run a sweep with Trey Franks. Not only did Bell show power, he showed some speed an elusiveness in leading the team in rushing. I'm not sure that any player, except maybe a kicker, has had a bigger impact while playing only a dozen plays in a game.

Landry Jones was the caretaker for the Sooners offense in this game, finally getting a touchdown pass without Ryan Broyles. If this was indeed his final game at OU, it was rather nondescript. Jones rarely went downfield and when he did, Kenny Stills dropped what would have been a long TD. It was mostly dink and dunk, with Jones giving up a scoring opportunity when his questionable goal line pass to a closely covered receiver was tipped and intercepted. He scrambled twice, almost getting his brain scrambled on the first one, and pretty much left heavy lifting to Bell.

Wonder what Drew Allen, the true backup quarterback, thought about not seeing the field in the bowl game? We will find out this spring.

    Grade: Bell (A) Jones (C)

    Running Back

Brennan Clay had his best game since being injured in 2010 against Florida State. The time off from the end of the season seemed to help him the most and he looked quicker and more confident than at any time this year.

Roy Finch took the back seat for most of this game. He couldn't get untracked in the running game, but did make a contribution on a couple of pass plays. OU will definitely be looking for immediate help from a bigger back next season.

Trey Millard had a highlight hurdling run, but was again underutilized. He had one more carry than Franks, which is at least better than one more carry than a dead man.

    Grade : B-

    Receiver

Kameel Jackson got the start and showed that he is ready for prime time now. Jackson could be a breakout star next fall.

Kenny Stills continued to look slowed from leg injuries during the game and missed his highlight opportunity with the end zone drop. Franks also had a drop and was not a factor in the passing game.

James Hanna finished with a couple of catches and it was nice to see Trent Ratterree end his career with a TD catch, but he also had a miss.

    Grade: B-

    Offensive Line

Ben Habern never fully recovered from his hand injury and he struggled during the bowl game. Lane Johnson picked up a holding call, while in general, the line failed to open any significant holes for the running game.

The loss of Adam Shead played a major role combined with Habern's struggles. Hopefully, both will be ready for an interesting spring for the O-Line.

    Grade: C-

    Defensive Line

The emergence of R.J. Washington came to full realization in this game, as he had his most physical performance of the year. It appears that the light has come on and he understands what going all out can produce. Frank Alexander garnered a lot of the attention from Iowa but still made his presence felt. He will be missed.

Playing the four man front, the tackles were more active, as Jamarkus McFarland had a season high in stops. That is a position that needs to be beefed up before next season.

After some early struggles, the Sooners shut the Iowa running game down for the final three quarters, holding them to 27 yards on 21 attempts.

    Grade: A-

    Linebacker

Travis Lewis started the game as if he would be more mobile than at any time this season. He seemed to fade a bit as the game went on, but still deserves credit for gutting it out this year.

Tom Wort was active as usual and picked up a gravy interception at the end. He will need to step up his role and stay healthy for the first time next year. With his pre-game comments, it was interesting to see that Corey Nelson saw significant playing time. Joseph Ibiloye was involved in more key plays in this game than at any time this year.

    Grade:B +

    Secondary

Jamell Fleming was the defensive MVP and saw a lot of action, being challenged by Iowa's all-time leading receiver Marvin McNutt. Fleming acquitted himself well, allowing McNutt just four catches, breaking up three more and grabbing an interception. We will next see him playing on Sundays in the fall.

Don't forget Demontre Hurst. Even though they don't throw his way as often, he was ready when called upon and had a nice game.

Tony Jefferson played a solid game and Aaron Colvin didn't have much action, which means the Sooners were doing their job.

    Grade; A-

    Special Teams

Tress Way was a big factor early in the game, turning field position around when Iowa was dominating the ball in the opening quarter. He tied the bowl record for the longest punt and all his efforts were solid.

Michael Hunnicutt finished the year with 10 straight field goals and is on his way to becoming a true weapon for the Sooners. Coaches are now confident in playing for field goal position.

The kickoff return game was the best of the season, with Trey Franks and Brennan Clay each breaking a long run. Clay's would have been even longer had he not tripped himself up. Punt returns continued to be weak, as Kenny Stills never appeared comfortable in the role after stepping in for Ryan Broyles.

Kick coverage was solid. Kickoffs continue to be up and down. They will still be looking for someone to supplant Patrick O'Hara next season.

    Grade: A

  • Very accurate grading,

    Determining appropriate grade - A

    Explaining grade - A

    schooner9

  • Since as you point out the game was NEVER out of hand, what would make you surmise that Drew Allen should have "seen the field?"

Second, you're being ridiculous. Big back, small back, ANY Frickin back would be screwed running behind our O Line which was at least better this game but still very poor run blocking. There are runs that FINCH had this year that Millard would have been tackled for a loss on but Finch got yardage because of Matrix like moves. Clay, Millard, ANYONE who encounters a DT, a DE AND a LB 4 yds behind the line of scrimmage is NOT going to get much.

It's just the truth. With all of that I would love to see Millard get about 5-6 carries every game!

  • You underrated Landry in my opinion.

OMG - so you give Landry a "C" while the receivers graded better.

IF Stills catches the long ball in the end zone for a TD (which he should have done) does Landry get a "B"?

If Stills catches the two very catchable ones on the right side does he move to a "B+"?
If Franks catches nice pass in the right flat on the run and we then get a first down, Does Landry get an "A-"?

Landry did miss on some balls sure but he still hit over 60% with all the dropped balls. He should get a better grade than the receivers, for sure.

  • Comparing LJ and BB is stupid. They were asked to do totally different things in the game. You paint BB as "walking on water" and LJ and being a pitiful stand in for a real qb. Weak evaluation on your part. Why OUinsider picked you to do this grading thing is beyond me. I guess it must be the "peter principle" at work.

  • Keep it up, Tony. Good read.

    soonerj87

  • Tony for future reference I suggest you use the "tebow principle'" when grading jones .... He is so good he couldn't possibly be graded lower than an A. If he has incompletions well then his recievers just dropped the catches or didn't run the right routes. If he is sacked the oline didn't block long enough. If he fumbles the ball boy failed to properly dry the ball.

  • You have an interesting grading scale where a QB earns an A on 0/0 passing. It is deserving of a I at best.

The OL graded lower than the WR's? What game were you watching? Who allowed your "A" QB to be named MVP?

I would grade QB as a single grade and it was a B-.

The WR's are a clear weakness right now due to injuries. They were a D.

The OL was a B-. The pass protection was outstanding most of the night and they executed exceptionally well in the red zone.

    RB was a C.

    Totally agree

    prism

  • Landry was sacked twice, does that not figure in? The D Line was in our backfield on most running plays while the ball was being handed off, does that not figure in? For some reason the Bell package is blocked better- the reason is probably called having Ripkowski and Millard out front.

    hooknladder

  • Can't say I agree with many of the grades. The same OL that you graded so low did a pretty fair job of blocking the run in the Bell Dozer as well as in the second half with Clay and Millard. We can't win anything much with the set of receivers who played Friday night. Stills is a mystery. Without Broyles, he seems to be lost. None of them get very open. Jones threw a great pass to complete the ball to Jackson. Yes, Travis Lewis showed great courage in playing with a broken toe. But his level of play is not very good in the passing game. On their first scoring drive, Travis had a big pass interference call. Then he tried to block the little running back down but missed, which allowed him to gain an extra 8 yards. And to finish the drive off, he left his man when the QB started scrambling and, of course, his man caught the TD pass. Really, Tony, were we watching the same game?

I'm pretty sure OSU is playing their bowl game on a different field. You definately do not get an A for accuracy.

I will give you a B for your efforts in seeking out as many things to bitch about as possible to start your post. I'd give you an A, but I think you could have found a few more if you really gave it your all. Maybe post a reply with a few com-plaints that maybe you missed? Wouldn't want to leave any of them out. Still though, kudos.

Rest assured I do read every post. They provide much entertainment each week.

As for your question, yes I did play football, three year two-way starter and all-district and all-area QB who called his own plays, but that was 40 years ago and really doesn't make much difference. Just as someone not ever having played football is irrelevant to their ability to analyze a game.

I have been covering OU Football for 33 years, so I guess that is why this poor reporter is asked to provide a different view of the games.

Some like it, some don't but that is what makes the world go round.

Happy New Year to everyone. Keep commenting and showing passion for Sooner football.

Agree with you, receivers b-? I think they are young and talented and will be very good some day but am I the only one that remembers Landry hitting them long passes last year and a few early in the season? You have basically 3 downs to get a first down and we know throwing the ball is more risky than running it but what happens when a QB loses confidence in a receivers ability to make a big play, run crisp routes, and be where they are supposed to be out of their cuts. I look at dropped and errant passes as a loss of yardage in this system every time it happens it puts your back to the wall if you do not have the sure enough play maker you can go to and that was lost against A&M and that is when you run the ball, do not put all of the pressure on your young WR's to have to win it or lose it for you and that is not Landry's fault. I feel nobody deserves less than a B- just on the hard physical play alone. Way gets an A+ with extra credit for kicking the crap out of the ball...lol

A lot of sensitive people on Landry. The guy the last 5 games has been terrible! That is the truth!

I am convinced several of you do not know what an average QB in college football looks like. WR's drops and failure to create separation has been a problem post-Broyles. I am not saying that LJ is elite but he his well above average and is a certain Day 1 NFL prospect.

  • Very, very disappointing season. There's just no other way to slice it. Same with 2009 - and injuries are the crippling factor then and 2011.

I'm always looking to see if our team grows during the season - overcoming injury and setbacks to accomplish the most they can. This year seems to be a "wash" in that respect from my vantage point.

So, I am with all of you waiting now on a couple of things:

    1) Landry's decision to stay or go pro
    2) Coach Bob's housecleaning of players (and perhaps bringing Mike back in?)
    3) Spring ball

    On to 2012...

    Boomer!

  • Landry's grade is about right . The long pass to Stills he was a half count slow getting him the ball, the DB caught up to the play and pushed Stills. Ball bounced off his shoulder pad. When was the last time we got a pass interference call this season? As much as we pass, I can't remember one since we started conference play. Landry was consistently high. I was Hueple was on the sideline. Landry is already a streaky passer and Josh seems to clam him down. Kameel Jackson does look like he could be a star in the making. I am really looking forward to next year with him.
