OU Club of Ft Worth Meeting with OU Coaches

  • Just got back from the OU Club of Ft Worth gathering at Joe T Garcia's and here is a brief summary. First off, I had a real thrill as I was sitting next to Joe Washington Sr. Very, very nice man and we just talked most of the evening. Still looks good. The speakers in order were:

    1) Lew Hill-Assistant BB coach. Basically gave a rundown of incoming recruits and an overview of last season. Said they were disappointed with the season but happy with the effort.

Made mention of an article in Yahoo that there are 10 teams that did not make the NCAA this year who are expected to this season. OU is one of those teams. They have a transfer (can't remember his name) who will be eligible this season and he said he is very good. Didn't talk real long.

    2) Cale Gundy-RB coach. Again, gave an overview of the season. Said everyone likes Mike and he has "toned down" a bit from his earlier era at OU. Dom Whaley looks great and is way ahead of schedule-he's preparing for a "wait and see" approach.

Kenny Stills was MIA from spring ball due to an injury and "off the field issues". Blake Bell has improved a lot and that is due directly to Josh Huepel.

Very, very excited about Trey Metoyer. Said he has the chance to be the best ever at OU. (quote).

Also likes his running backs coming in. Key will be young 18 year olds being ready to play big time football. Loves the fact TCU is now in the league since there are so many OU fans in the DFW area.

Favorite OU memory was the first time he went on the field as a Sooner-against UCLA in the Rose Bowl. Also mentioned his brother and was glad he had success. But he never wanted to coach with him. Why? Why would he leave OU and go to OSU? Got a big laugh.

    3) Little Joe-talked about his current position and how much he loves OU. Talked about tradition, stories about growing up with his dad who was also his coach and his favorite OU memory. First time down the ramp.

Said he sees a lot of the guys and said Metoyer is the real deal. Talks to Switzer about 3 times a week.

Those are the highlights. Not a large turnout as this is a much smaller gathering than Dallas has and there wasn't much advance notice. For those who were there-feel free to add anything I missed.

  • Thanks for the recap. Like hearing what they really think about Metoyer. He sounds like a stud.

By the way, the BB player that Lew Hill was talking about had to be 6'9" Amath M'Baye from Wyoming. He's athletic and may be the best player on next year's team. He along with Osby, Fitzgerald, and the newly signed juco DJ Bennett give the Sooners a pretty good front line.

  • Wish I had known that the event was coming up. I have been attending the OU Club of Dallas meetings since we moved to the area in 1968, but anymore their meetings don't seem to match up with my schedule. Probably need to start checking out the OU Club of FW in the future.

  • One funny story Little Joe told was about an ole horn holding up both hands with the horn sign. Joe got so sick of the guy giving the double horn sign that he reminded him that it really meant the FOUR times his teams beat them in his four years at OU. 72, 73, 74 & 75. Classic!

  • Great report. Concerned about Still's "off the field issues".
