OU 4th all-time with NFL draft picks

  • Saw this tweeted yesterday by OU Football - http://www.soonersports.com/sports/m-footbl/archive/m-footbl-draft-notes-streaks.html

I probably could've guessed USC and ND would be at/near the top, but I didn't realize OU was 4th, ahead of schools like Michigan, Penn State, Texas, etc...and Alabama not even in the top 10.

"Oklahoma continued several notable streaks in the 2011 NFL Draft. At least one Sooner has been selected in 49 consecutive drafts (1963-2011) and 43-straight times in the first seven rounds (1969-2011). For 14-straight years (1998-2011), a Sooner has been selected in the first three rounds.

    - Since the first NFL draft in 1936, 350 Sooners have been selected.
    - Oklahoma's 350 all-time picks rank OU first in the Big 12 and fourth overall nationally.
    - Forty-two Sooners have been selected in the first round (including a program-record four in 2010).
    - OU has supplied three overall No. 1 picks: Sam Bradford in 2010, Billy Sims in 1980 and Lee Roy Selmon in 1976. - Oklahoma supplied the first overall No. 1 pick (Sam Bradford, 2010) for the Big 12 in the conference's history.
    - All-America linebacker Brian Bosworth was the No. 1 pick in the 1987 supplemental draft by the Seattle Seahawks.
    - The first Sooner ever drafted was All-American J.W. "Dub" Wheeler by the Packers in 1936."

I believe the streak is inaccurate as we didn't have a player selected in the 1995 NFL draft. Scott Blanton & Ben Cavil both made NFL teams as free agents out of college that year but neither was drafted. Cavil made the Chargers practice squad and then spent time with the Eagles & Ravens during his career. Blanton was placed on IR in 1995 with Washington and then kicked for them from 1996-98.

I reviewed the 1995 draft and did not see any Sooners listed.

Looks like you're correct according to the draft by school list on NFL.com - http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?abbr=O&collegeName=Oklahoma&abbrFlag=0&type=school

It also appears that OU didn't have anyone drafted in 1963 (when the above soonersports.com page says the streak began).

I have found other errors of information in the past made by the OU media relations/sports information department and have sent them the corrected information but for some reason they choose not to correct things or don't care too.

    Not surprising. :-/

Things are rarely perfect or totally bad. Reality=closer to the middle. Never as bad as it seems, never as good as it seems.

  • Why is it not surprising?

Looks like they corrected the information after today's draft (maybe based on your input?).

They updated their draft page - http://www.soonersports.com/sports/m-footbl/archive/m-footbl-draft-notes-streaks.html - and swapped out that previous "49 consecutive draft streak" line with the following: "Since the NFL introduced the draft in 1936, Oklahoma has been the most consistent program in the nation in supplying talent to the pros. A Sooner has been selected in 75 of the 77 NFL Drafts (only misses were in 1995 and 1962). Notre Dame (74 of 77) and USC (72 of 77) follow OU"
    ...which is pretty amazing.

They also added a bunch more stats, notes, etc.

I also found this site, which appears to be pretty comprehensive in terms of OU players drafted all-time - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Oklahoma_Sooners_in_the_NFL_Draft
