O-line depth, James?

  • I can see that we are loaded on the interior (center, both guard spots) to the extent that Bronson Irwin could be redshirted, but what about at tackle? Looking at the roster we have Lane Johnson and Tyrus Thompson battling on the left, then at right we have Daryl Williams. After that we have Farniok and Dismuke, two redshirt freshman with no game experience, Kyle Marrs(true freshman) and possibly Will Latu if he makes it in, is that correct? Is there any indication which side Farniok or Dismuke play, right or left tackle? Thanks

  • Bump for James...

  • Latu will start out at LT competing with Tyrus and Lane. D. Williams will be the RT with Farniok behind him. Dislike doesn't have the feet to play tackle, but isn't doing that well at guard either.

This is the way it has been explained on this site and others.

This is basically correct, but, let's don't get caught up in assigning a guy a permanent position or left side right side.

For example, most of the tackles can play either side. Sure, they may have as preference, or do better on one or the other, but those designations are never set in stone. Daryl Williams CAN play left, same for Tyrus Thompson who could possibly play right side.

Farniok can also go left right, and will probably go to the one side where needed most when it's his time to start.

They are set at guard, for the time being, and IF Bronson Irwin does not win the start this August I personally hope he chooses to RS. Nila could possibly play center, or stay at guard, but he will end up starting by next year. IMO, Gabe Ikard is our best guard at the moment.

I would disagree about Dismuke not doing well. I would say that, for his age, he's doing fine. No, he may not be the star of his class, but James Patton is still very high on his future.

As for Latu, who knows where he'll play. Guard, tackle, or possibly at DT if needed. (His aggressive play makes him a possibility there IF NEEDED). Will he start out at OT? Probably, but all the new guys always get a look at other positions where they are filmed and later studied by the coaching staff. Maybe a coach notices some detail unknown to a layman, and says, "Hey, let me borrow that guy for a few days next week."

To sum it up, James Patton says it's the deepest overall talent that he's had since he's been here. Stoops says similar things.

I think LT is a very special position, and it normally takes a very talented lineman to have the agility and quick feet needed to play there at an OU level. RT is usually more of a "road grader" type.
