Now for a little perspective

  • The negativity on this board (and others) is amazing.

Not only do people focus on the truly negative - like a 19 year old dropping "too many" passes - but also characterize things as negative that SHOULD occur.

One of my best friends is an Alabama fan and lives in Tuscaloosa where he attends weekly Saban luncheons, etc.

He was telling me that they routinely have players transferring out - mostly due to losing their scholarship. Their offensive coordinator is leaving after BCS bowl to become a head coach. Their defensive coordinator is expected to leave, too.

They sign 25 new players a year and realize they must do a lot of trimming to keep to the 85 limit.

He did say that most are cut before the fall season rather than at the end like we are doing right now.

Frankly, we probably should have been doing more cutting regularly so we can take 25 new players per year.

We also should not freak out over coaching changes. They happen every day.

Stoops values stability in his staff and it has worked well for him. But if he now makes some changes people act like the sky is following.

This boards sees too much as bad that is really pretty normal or needed.

  • Thanks roadster. Love him or hate him, Saban knows how this thing works. 'Bama bringing in 25 recruits every year makes sense.

I of course have mixed feelings about the players. It sucks from their point of view. Those kids who "don't work out" must scramble to find a place to play, or just finish their degree and get on with their life. Many might not even finish college after getting the boot from Bama.

But, big time College Football is not like it was under Switzer. In those days a program like Alabama or Oklahoma could carry players that never saw the field in 4 years, and still bring in new players every year. With today's severe scholly limits, that is no longer a winning strategy, even though it is a nice humanitarian gesture, it doesn't fit in with "feeding the monster" at Alabama, or Oklahoma.

Saban knows how to "feed the monster" that is Alabama football. Stoops appears to be doing some of that this year.

  • It is easier to cut someone loose who has not been following the rules or doing was is asked of them.

Somewhere in the last day or so I saw a news quote attributed to one of our assistant coaches that basically said that if a player comes here and does what is expected they will have a scholarship for four years regardless of whether they play or not. I would assume that would include being positive towards team and coaches. I think that is fair.

I agree. I have no desire to see us cutting loose players who have held up their end of the bargain but just haven't managed to get playing time.

This is college football, not the NFL. Nick Saban can do as he wishes, but I'd rather we took the high road.

  • Taking the high road is being fair to the team members who do the right thing. Carrying players who do not is not the right thing. Most scholarships, academic or otherwise, have a performance requirement, and many have a "character" requirement. Just as yours or my job is not protected if we don't perform, students are not protected if they don't perform. Most parents don't continue to fund their kids if they aren't serious students either unless they are either well off enough it doesn't really affect them, or they are more worried about being a friend than a parent. My hat's off to coaches who are strong and are character builders vs. coddlers.

  • ROADSTER, YOU MY MAN ARE 100% CORRECT. May the doomsday mentalists take a hike and go to some other team to moan and grimmace.

  • You're quite right that Saban puts a lot of work into trimming their roster so they've got room for a full class.

However, you've actually underestimated the extent to which he does it. Alabama signs well in excess of 25 players most years. Over the past 5 seasons, Bama has signed roughly 20 more players than we have. The way they achieve that is by aggressively slashing the roster each year. If you aren't moving up the depth chart after a few semesters on campus in Tuscaloosa, you're toast.

A certain amount of attrition is healthy, but I think 'Bama and their SEC cohorts take it a few steps too far.

Stoops isn't cutting loose players who have held up their end. He's cutting loose those who haven't. What else would you expect him to do: carry players who aren't fulfilling their scholarship requirements like going to class, meetings, training, etc?

Stoops knows what he's doing. We need to have more faith in him.

    Cover 2

  • Guys,
I don't think Stoops is "cutting" anyone. I believe that other than a Ronnell Lewis class-skipping situation, these guys "cut" themselves. The deal is pretty much a 4-5 year scholarshiop renewable year by year and as the assistant said if you are a good student and show up and give effort and are a team guy you'll keep your scholly no matter what. The guys that are transferring go to practice every day, realize where they are on the depth chart or talent-wise, and decide they need to leave if they're gonna play.

The same thing happens on high school trams and middle school teams and it happens in every sport. We've all hit that point where we just don't play any more because some other guy is better or ahead of us. And we either quit or if we can we transfer.

Bottom line there is no "cutting". The transferring players are leaving by and large (B. Williams is an exception b/c of his kid) because they couldn't "cut it."

  • Yes, Saban cuts players schollies whether they fly the straight and narrow or not but I agree with your post in general. I will say that I am one that talks about the drops but not in a derogatory manner only to express a point. Everyone makes mistakes but seem to focus on one player with the criticism.
