Notre Dame, BYU to Big 12? *

  • There is alleged "inside info" coming out of Austin that talks at the highest levels are progressing with ND and BYU to slide into the Big 12 very soon after A&M leaves.

And if Texas is talking to ND and BYU, then Boren and Joe C must be involved.

Can James or anyone confirm this from OU's end?

Has been rumored for a while that UT was driving a process to talk to ND. Still not sure I believe it. Big XII just makes no sense for ND to join. Logistically it doesn't really work out, academically it doesn't really work out, tradition it doesn't really work out (can't keep playing all those nonconf games they've played annually for a long time).

I suppose financially it may be a boost though as I believe I read NBC is paying ND about $9mm/yr right now, significantly less than the Big XII makes.

    Academics? Who cares...
Logistics? They already play USC, Stanford, Boston College. I think they can afford the air travel to Oklahoma and Texas.
Tradition? They'd probably keep USC and Michigan on their schedule. Are Purdue, Mich St, Army, Navy, and BC realy that important to them? Maybe, maybe not...

Money? It could be huge. They'd still keep their NBC contract, but also double-dip with the Big 12 contract, which ESPN would definitely renegotiate if ND and BYU were added.

I think it's just so crazy that it might work.

    Good points.

Re: Academics, I would think a ton of administrators and decision makers care. Just like the Big 10 officials cared when considering who to invite last summer.

Re: Money, I don't think they'd be able to double dip. I don't think they'd get special treatment, and so like the rest of the Big XII conference schools they would likely keep third tier rights but surrender first and second tier ones. NBC contract would go away.

Which reminds me, do you all recall the posters here who had connections suggesting NBC was/will be a player in CFB contract negotiations? I could see them swooping in and taking Tier 1 rights for a Big XII that has BYU, ND, UT and OU when the ESPN contract expires in a few years. That would be neat.

  • Do we REALLY want to be in a conference with THREE members having an economic advantage over us?

    Three? UT, ND, and....?

    kwest2

  • Not sure I see the issue here, BYU does not have an economic advantage over us. And if we went to the SEC, there would be at least two teams there with the advantage, PAC-?? has at least 1-2 that might.

  • As has been said by many people many times, dollars drive these decisions. If ND and BYU feel like they can better themselves financially, that will ultimately determine what they do. Logistics and tradition are factors, but first and foremost, follow the money.

I'd say that the answer is definately yes regarding the service academies.

  • Admittedly I like the idea. No question it would return our conference to respectability.........well, maybe that's a stretch as long as Beebe's still around, but you get my point. The B1G would be pissed! All those years of groveling at ND's feet.......that'd be great.

Part of me still wants to just 'cut and run' though. Change and new rivalries could be cool too. There's no rivalry we could lose now that would be worse than what we lost in Nebraska.

  • If those rumors are true then that only takes the Big 12 up to 11 teams. Are they going to add a third team to get back to 12? If so then who?

  • ND is very loyal to its tradition, and they will never dump the military schools.

    Mysterio1

  • ND would be insane to join the Big 12 instead of the Big 10 (which would happily accept them) or just staying independent. Right now they have the best of both worlds with the independent football contract and Big East affiliation with other sports.

  • Oklahoma's tradition takes a backseat to no one, maybe they should have fought harder to keep Nebraska and Colorado in the Big 12?
They were also part of our tradition.

  • I'm still a little concerned about having our 18-22 year olds playing 23-27 year olds at BYU every year.
