ND Fan Here My Thoughts On The Game

  • NDNJ96 said...

This is a big game for you guys, biggest since 2000 per your coach. A lot riding on this game for OU. In many respects ND is playing with house money. Nobody expected us to be undefeated at this point. I am amazed how confident the posters are on the board, I honestly have not watched many of your games so maybe your confidence is well grounded.

We're top 5 in scoring offense and 12th in scoring defense, despite facing three top 10 offenses so far.

You're no. 2 in scoring defense, but the best offense you've faced ranks 48th in scoring.

And you rank 78th in scoring offense.

    Our confidence is well-grounded.

That said, we have a lousy record against ND, all-time, and anything can happen in a given game. You guys have shown a knack for doing what it takes to win. I think it'll be a hard-fought battle. If we turn the ball over, all bets are off, but we've really done that in just one game, and it's the one we lost.

And that team we lost to? They're 14th in scoring defense (despite playing some great offenses, as we have) and 10th in scoring defense. We turned the ball over three times against them, two of them for scores. And we still lost by just five points.

Should we be scared of the 78th ranked offense?

ND should commit to hitting Landry at least twice in the early stages. This will ensure they stay in the game because Landry goes into a shell after getting hit hard once or just tackled twice. I'm worried about Landry turning into NDs MVP like the KState, OSU...etc big games in the past.

If we are smart, we continue to work the run game with Williams AND Millard, taking the pressure off of Landry because he's mentally weak in big games.

  • I hope that the OU team that showed up in Dallas is the same team that shows up in Norman this week. If so, we blow up ND. I think it's possible as the motivation to play well against a formidable opponent will be present, making our practices sharp and focused. As it was vs. UT's vaunted D, the key to this game will be the O-Line.

  • Just curious for your take on your oline. I know in preseason they were banged up. Whats your opinion on them.

  • These posts about scoring 50 points on Notre Dame are simply ridiculous. Think about it you played Texas and Kansas who have 0 Defense and put up 50 + points on them. The only team you played with a remotely good Defense was Kansas State and they stopped your high powered offense. This game will be much closer than sooner fans think, but honestly who cares we will find out soon enough. And yes I believe Notre Dame has a chance in this game. The only common team we have grounds on is Florida State. But again it way to hard to compare teams that way. Some match ups are just a bitch and from what I have seen I think ND can stay in this game if we can run the ball.

You will not run on ND Defense it just isn't going to happen. You can run any tempo you like, our front seven will have its way with your running backs. The Dozer will meet our front 7 soon enough and its not going to be pretty.

And which top-notch offense has ND's vaunted defense stopped?

There isn't one. Not one. We're the first you'll face.

As for KSU, they're a terrific team, but we lost to them for one reason: turnovers. 14 of their points came about because of our turnovers and we fumbled on the one-yard-line as we were about to go in and score.

That's not an excuse -- KSU avoided mistakes and we didn't. It's part of the game, and if we have turnovers against ND, we could certainly lose this week -- but don't kid yourself that KSU dominated us. We gained nearly 400 yards against them.

Every week for the past two years all we have heard is how teams are going to stop the Belldozer and it doesn't, it just doesn't. You'll have to define "running on NDs defense"? Are we talking 100 yards? 150? 200? At OU we focus on ypc more than anything else because sacks skew rushing totals in college.

  • ND20 - I think you should take some tact lessons from your fellow fan, Kaiser. Nobody in this thread had mentioned 40 points until you mentioned it. But, I do hope you are enjoying your freshman year at South Bend.

Can OU score 40 against ND? Yes, they are capable. especially with a few breaks.
Will OU score 40 against ND? Probably not.
Will OU score enough points against ND to win? Yes, if they don't turn the ball over.

I think ND will see a great OU defensive scheme and a lot of OU pure speed.
I think ND will see a tweaked running game with a few new wrinkles we have saved for the occasion - plus some more OU pure speed. I think ND will have to play the nickel and our WR's and Landry just love mano o mano.

  • NattyRudes - I want to be the first to invite you back to this board on Oct 28. We can discuss passing totals, rushing totals, Belldozer plays, stuff like that. K?

  • One of the things Im interested in seeing is if Diaco brings pressure early. Normally our defense plays a bend but dont break style. Dont give up the big play, stop the run, and try to get pressure with 4. Given Oklahoma's fast starts ill be curious to see if he sends guys early to try and get hits on Jones. Im pretty sure Stoops will have everyone at the line showing blitz on every play. Stanford was pretty effective blitzing or showing blitz. I thought Golson did a better job in the 2nd half of that game and if he ever figures out he has the best pass recieving TE in the country we could get some great one on one match ups. Im wondering if Stoops plays Jefferson on Eifert or elects to go with a nickel package and goes with th nickel corner. Eifert is our biggest weapon and our best match up player. I think he has to have atleast one td and 7-10 catches if we are to win. Id like to see misdirection get golson rolling a few plays and then a fake roll draw. Maybe even some delayed screens to the rb's dont think we have ran one all year. Got to use Oklahoma's aggressiveness to our advantage

  • The history is irrelevant. Common opponents is irrelevant. It is about match ups, turnovers, execution, and some luck. I am confident our match ups, ability to create turnovers, execution, will prevail.. Throw in some Sooner Magic for good measure.

We will provide the most versatile offense you can imagine. Short, intermediate, and long passes. We will mix it to our RB, FB, Slot, and WR's.

What will get ND more than anything else is our tempo. While it is not as fast as in the past, it is still fast enough to break the will of the opponent.

I am not trying to disrespect ND. In fact they have improved. However, they are SIGNIFICANTLY over-ranked and it will be demonstrated on Saturday. ND's only chance is turnovers and I think we have improved in both reducing TO's while creating TO's on D.

I will be taking the points in this game with little concern.

I think he said most anticipated game since 2000 and that has a lot to do with the traditions of both schools and the fact that we haven't forgotten who stopped our 47 game win streak in the 50s. ND is one of the very few schools to have a all time winning record against us and the only school with a lopsided W/L advantage against us.

Because of our loss to K State, I'd say we are both playing with house money. One thing for sure, the winner will be in the NC game discussion.

In the end, we're pretty much homers, like you would expect and of course Vegas thinks we should win. We have great respect ND, especially your defensive front and Brian Kelly.

I sure hope we beat you, because you will get us at your place next year with us having a first year QB and lots of new guys on the defense.

    NCJIM

  • I doubt OU will have much of a running game but I assure you you aren't stopping the Belldozer.

I'm going to guess we do just enough running to open up the short passing game and screens.

I don't think Notre Dame is over ranked. They are unbeaten and have played Michigan State, Michigan, Stanford, Purdue, Miami, BYU and Navy. That is a very respectable schedule. Notre Dame deserves their ranking and when OU beats Notre Dame, I am not about to say it isn't a big deal because Notre Dame was over ranked.

I don't have any respect for Brian Kelly. I think he allowed that student to film football practice and should have been terminated if not prosecuted for his actions. Kelly chose to have practice. Kelly chose to have practice filmed. A student died as a result of those decisions. How can anyone respect that man.

I just couldn't let this go.

We're the last two Texas games not "big games".

    At Tech?

    Fla State?

What about Nebraska in the last Big 12 CC game?

  • Best stats out there to preview the game: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/fei2012

    Overall: OU #2, ND #5
    Offense: OU #3, ND #4
    Defense: OU #6, ND #10
    ST: OU #17, ND #90

Looks like a very even matchup, with an edge in ST to OU. Add in a better coaching staff + home field advantage, and I think we'll see a win for the Sooners between 7 and 17 points.

  • ND has played tougher teams up to this point than OU. Ill give KSU as tough as anything ND has played and OU gave that game away I dont care if I offend KSU people, they know it and we know it.
ND is road tested.. played a good Stanford team with a very good QB/RB and TE. They have played a few other "good" teams. But not quite on what OU is playing at right now... not the first 3 games.
ND has not had to deal with the OU team speed, the fast pace they can get to and mulitiple sets off offense. ND has a very good DL and of course Mr. World Te'o.. I think Ikard is the key to our game.. he will have his hands FULL keeping #9 off LJ and keeping LJ clean. I will take my chances Millard vs Teó. I like the WRs vs ND DBs, I think OU could get a running game going on the outside.. and of course the Belldozer. ND has not given up a rushing TD this year I believe.
ND on offense.. if the running QB is in then ND has a much better chance but he is young and not seen and OU defense outside maybe Stanford who blizes all the time. ND has a TE that will beat just about anyone on OU at LB... he is very good, probably best on offense. The running game is good for ND but not great. If the passing QB comes to play and OU can get to him there will be a lot of mistake... I like that match up. ND has a very good OL and I think this is key to OU...the DL needs to continue doning what they are doing and cause pressure and stop the run.
Should be a great game.. I hope its good to a point then I want OU to turn it up! I want the crowd to be 08 plus. Should be fun and the whole US will be watching OU... time to turn it up!

I'm hell when I'm well.. And, I am never sick!

ND has played tougher teams up to this point than OU.

According to the current BCS standings, we've played the #3 team (at home and we lost -- and I agree with you: we gave it away), the #14 team (on the road; we won decisively), and the #23 team (neutral site; we slaughtered them).

ND's played #17 and #22, both at home and they squeaked by both.
