NCAA Recruiting Deregulation: OU's Strategy? *

  • James - Haven't seen much discussion here on this topic. It seems more and more likely that recruiting deregulation will occur, allowing for basically unlimited resources to be allocated to recruiting. SEC schools are hiring up tons of personnel to prepare for the change, and just today Texas announced hiring a guy from Alabama for a "Director of Player Personnel" position.

My question is: Do you have any insight as to how OU will proceed? What they will do to be ahead of the curve when this change likely goes into effect?

  • Well, I didn't see this from 30 minutes ago. Maybe not an arms race quite yet - but the question remains. Do you know if Joe C / Boren / Stoops are willing and ready to hire a large staff if that becomes the norm for some major schools?

I think the bigger question is where are they going to get the money to hire that staff? The University already has issues with pay and finding funds to do projects.

Not in the atheletic department. The football team is for all practical purposes financially separate from the university that being so If the football needs to expand its payroll to accommodate a larger recruiting depart they won't have a hard time funding it.0

I disagree there. The AD, specifically football is limited on what they can pay as well. Yes they bring in money but they are going to have to cut spending somewhere to accommodate the added cost.
