Most lied-about (in media) OU games and/or teams in your opinion

  • First off, there is no wrong answer. I'm just curious what others may think in terms of what they remember over the years.

    1. Fiasco Bowl, 2007. Incredibly enough, that debacle is treated more like a David/Goliath outcome than Michigan losing at home to Appalachian State. For one thing, the '06 Sooners were very young and probably the weakest of our conference title teams under that format. For another, Boise was ranked ahead of us in one poll. Of course, I know that story line about the lovable underdogs plays well - especially if the non-Oklahoma media can put the Black Hat firmly on our guys. I will admit to being biased on this one, since I had to sit through that disaster, but I also can't take the "big lie" that's come up whenever that game is mentioned. Geez, it's not like we lost to a one-win New Mexico State team or something....

    2. Mistake of '88. That's the barf-making NCAA title game in KC. I hated Kansas before then, and it increased exponentially afterward. For one thing, the '88 KU team underachieved until the "Dance," and for another they had a homecourt advantage. Seriously, even though OU was clearly better as the season unfolded, everyone forgets that OU was a distant third in the preseason polls behind the Beakers and Missouri. KU was also the preseason No. 1 in the nation that year in Basketball Times. I dont' think OU was even ranked. But, back in that era, the media loved "unathletic" looking teams like the other three teams in the Final Four: Kansas, Duke and Arizona. All three pretty much billed themselves as morally superior to football schools and other teams they deemed unfit to be considered basketball schools. And don't get me started on the aftermath. I even read an article that said the self-proclaimed classy KU fans followed the OU team bus back to the hotel just so they could taunt them that much more.

    3. Any OU-Texas game in the mid-80's. Back then, the Dallas Morning News always seemed to come up with an invented "scandal" to investigate, and it always seemed to "break" around the time that one of Switzer's powerhouse teams was headed to the Cotton Bowl to crush some Bevo. But when a former Bevoid like Edwin "Streaker" SImmons got busted in Austin, that somehow never got much emphasis.

    4. Bedlam Basketball since the Saint Eddie days. Didn't matter how the series stood, it was always "OSU is the better basketball school" in the Oklahoma media. They did such a good job of selling that nonsense that even many OU grads tend to believe it. OU still leads it by 34 games, and while the Pukes have been slightly better lately, they haven't been getting sweeps in Bedlam either. And the deifing of Sutton was just nauseating.

    5. Colorado media's bizarre notion that the "Saint Sal" teams were on a higher moral plain than OU and everyone else in the conference. Sure, OU had its problems around the same time with player behavior, but the Puffs had plenty as well. I'm not making excuses for any of the guys from OU who committed crimes - they make me sick. But to suggest that a higher number of player arrests at CU at the same time is to be excused? Please. And yes, one Denver columnist made it a point to trash OU specifically when discussing the issue.

  • That lsu blew us out in the '03 MNG. We lost by 7. Only two jason white pick 6's let them get more than 7 points. Lsu didn't even have a first down in the 2nd half. That's how dominant our defense was. How the hell did we lose that game?

  • That game against Texas in the 80's that ended up in a tie on a rainy day when the Keith Stanberry interception in the end zone was disallowed for God knows what reason. That one still sticks in my craw.

True, but I was aiming for stuff people remember that negatively impacted OU somehow.

Another one I remember, but most people wouldn't, was when OU got its probation in December of 1988 in football. One of those fat slobs on "The Sports Reporters" cited the "Milliion Dollar Walk" as proof of how evil OU was. The only problem was that the "Million Dollar Walk" was a page out of the novel "Life Its Own Self" (sequel to "Semi-Tough"). In the novel, it was a way that OU paid players for good plays, by walking along a line of boosters and shaking hands (and getting them filled with large-dollar bills).

That's definitely the only reference to a "Million Dollar Walk" that I ever heard about in any form. But it didn't stop one of those east-coasters from thinking it was a statement of fact.

Except there was only one JW pick-6, LSU had 4 first downs in the 2nd half and their defense was much more dominant than ours (their offense had over twice the yardage of our 154.) We had a great chance at the end but they kicked our butts all night.

And, what made it worse was when Switzer-hater Doug Looney covered the game like Texas made a superhuman, courageous effort to get the tie. The outright theft by the zebras barely got a mention. It was totally a "give Switzer the finger" effort by Looney.

I almost forgot about another media embarrassment, although I don't remember reading about it until it was Switzer's book. It was when some hack named Jack Taylor became obsessed with taking Barry down with odd "investigations." If someone remembers those articles at the time, please comment.

    NMSooner80

  • A few stand out to me .....

    1. That Switzer wasnt that great of a coach , just a great recruiter and bser........Yes he was a great recruiter and he was a players coach . But outsiders fail to realize his off knowledge . Such as perfecting the triple option , his tinkering with different aspect and gimmick plays off the triple base . And his adjusting the offense when needed to take advantage of his best players.

2.That OU since Stoops has been there is a finesse strictly passing team ......When i travel and talk football with other tourist , i am shocked to learn that they think of OU a pass only team that never runs the ball , like a run and shoot team . I always bring up how yes we do pass the ball alot , but Stoops really is old school and wants to be somewhat balanced . I bring up how we almost always play with a fb , and how hes usually the all league choice at years end. I mention Griffin , Demarco , Peterson . Then i mention that maybe they should look up the stats these guess racked up , then look at how many games they missed because of injury and it will even be more impressive.

    3. That Mack is just as good a coach as Stoops ....Yes mack has a great record and has also won a nat champ , and played in another . But lets look deeper...Mack has done less with more than any coach in the nation . He is the anti Mike Leech , Bill Snyder , these guys might not kiss ass and hug everyone like Mack , but they will take far less talent and coach them up. Stoops is much the same way , he takes 3 and4 star players and usually gets the most out of their abilities. You actually see improvement out of OU players from year to year . Aslo unlike Mack stoops doesnt beleive in entitlement and promising you a starting job during recruiting. Look at Macks non conf schedule compared to ours every year and see who has played harder competition. Bob has won heads up more often , and many years he doesnt just win , he stomps Mack in historic routs. He has won more conf champs , has played in twice as many nat champs games . And his worst teams are usually because of injury and he bounces back quickly. Mack has no excuse of injury , schedule , lack of talent ....it all comes down to coaching and mental toughness. When Stoops does lose he will quickly point out why we got beat will make no excuses . When Mack loses he always trys to spin the loss and wont even let his players be held accountable . You see Stoops chewing ass and handing out tough love when is called for. All i ever see Mack do is clap on the sidelines and smile while hugging his fragile players. So yes Mack is a decent coach and a hell of a nice guy , but its more off a case of him just being in a dream job. A job that at least 50 coaches could be placed in and they would have winning teams { something that the last 2 years mack has struggled to even stay a .500 team}.

But you gotta give him credit for fully cooperating with the police when they busted him for trying to climb in some terrified woman's window, completely naked, at 4am.

When asked for identification, he told the police "I think I'm a football player. I think my number is 33." (which was correct, BTW).

  • This is a good thread! I agree about the Boise game. Many people also forget OU was down 28-10 and pulled off a furious rally to go up 35-28 until BSU started all those trick plays. OU was also missing Malcolm Kelly that game which really hurt. I also somewhat concur about LSU game. Yes they dominated us in stats but a good chunk of their yards came on a couple of big plays. Also we were blowing them off the ball in the 4th quarter until KW got pass happy. Furthermore Strait had a great strip and recovery that should have given us great field position but official blew call.

The one I wanted to add is the myth that the 2008 Sooners were running up the scores in the 4th quarter. I tried to find the box scores but I couldn't. But I was arguing with a UT fan a few mos ago who was convinced OU was scoring 3-4 TDs in the 4th qtr with Bradford throwing bombs. Actually OU scored very few points in the 4th quarter that year and may even been outscored in 4th. UT even with good guy Colt and Mack scored more in 4th than we did. Along those same lines was the myth that the 2003 sooners ran it up on a&M in the 77-0 blowout. Again all 77 points were before 4th quarter. In fact we went to great pains not to scored in 4th and almost got our RBs killed in process. Franchione even admitted OU could have scored over 100 if we had wanted to.

  • Good call on the "ran it up on A&M" myth. That's another "ESPN Sports Reporter" in action, Mike Lupica.

I just remembered another one last night, that was both local and despicable.

People around my age will remember when Stacey King of Lawton High and Leonard Flowers of El Reno both signed with OU men's basketball in 1985. Flowers didn't even make it to the season opener that fall. Scuttlebutt was that he had a 23-year-old girlfriend who convinced him that he should start ahead of Choo Kennedy. As if!

That's kind of the start of it. Flowers quit and went home to El Reno. Somehow, the folks there decided that Tubbs "ran him off" and was out of line. Then a few months later, the newspaper in El Reno decided to do a "major investigation" of OU basketball. The worst thing they found was that some guy, an OU booster, saw King and Flowers out at dinner when they were being recruited and offered to pick up the tab, without knowing that was a minor violation. The paper in El Reno presented that as if it was an epic cheating scandal.

Anyone with half of an analytical brain could tell it was basically El Reno's revenge on Billy Tubbs. But what they didn't count on was that Flowers flaked on his second school (SW Louisiana), transferred to then-El Reno JC (now called Redlands), then flaked out there, too.

The only damage it really did to OU was to create animosity towards the team that was unnecessary. The secondary damage was slight. You guys might remember the burly, bearded photographer, Joe Garcia, who was Switzer's buddy and shadowed him on the sidelines. I heard Billy wanted to pull his press credentials for basketball, not knowing that Joe wasn't with the newspaper there in El Reno.

Definitely a screw-job, but I don't recall any media types saying we deserved it, or the calls were good, etc.

Cowherd had a blast telling Sooners to "get over it you got beat." He reported that poor ol' Reece was being harrassed by the OU fans. He made that game a part of his show all week and never discussed that the outcome was wrong.

    Deep Red

  • Forgot about Cowturd. Good recall. A local Pac-10 alum in Albuquerque was also spouting off early that week that OU had no complaint, but he conveniently forgot that the really bad "pass interference" call followed the EPIC blunder of saying Oregon recovered the onside kick. But, he's small potatoes, anyway, and clueless.

I disagree that they " kicked our butts all night" - that is the myth.

We had them on the ropes down the stretch and they were very fortunate to escape with the win on what was essentially their home turf.

If you look at the whole game you can't conclude it was a butt kicking, romp, blowout, or any of the other myths that are perpetuated.

Another recent example from last year that bugs me is how some Sooner fans will not acknowledge that Baylor had a darn good offensive football team. I hate hearing our fans act like we got beat by a crappy team that night.

  • Curious what others recall about "Finger-gate" parts 1 and 2, of the 1984 OU men's basketball season.

That's why Tubbs was accused of flipping off the crowd at Boulder in a three-OT game that we finally won. Then, over a month later, Choo Kennedy was doing the same in Beakerville.

Never mind that I think KU deserves a group-flippage.... This has to do with how it was covered. I didn't live in Oklahoma at the time, but here's what I remember hearing about it second-hand:

    1. the CU "bird" was most likely an outright lie, spread by a writer who hated Billy so much that he even took pleasure in Tubbs' near-fatal jogging accident. Same guy, an ex-Missouri Antler named Randy Holtz, later wrote for Basketball Times. I canceled a subscription because of him.

    2. the "KU bird" was Choo waving a championship ring, which he borrowed from former OU grad assistant Mike Anderson, I believe (from the '79 season). And it's not like you're going to get much honesty from the pro-KU writers of that region anyway. If you ever saw "semi-retired" Topeka writer Chuck Woodling's hit-piece of Wayman Tisdale, AFTER HIS PASSING, you'll know what I mean. It was so despicable that even many KU fans posted below the link to apologize.

    3. for some reason, the DOK didn't send a writer on the road with those '84 Sooners, who wound up 29-5. So they never challenged any of the stories about those nights. I heard Al Eschbach and John Brooks talking about it once on the radio, that summer that I did move back, and they said the coverage was ridiculous and downright dishonest.

Totally agree! Also, when we had our problems in late 80's, I think CU and Mizzery both had more players arrested off the field but since they didn't have the 'name' nobody cared and nobody reported. The Beefaloes were the worst!

  • You're right TYCA, that screw job in Lubbock on several critical plays near the end of the game was out and out ludicrous. One was worse than the other and got worse as the 4th quarter wore on, culminated by the bogus TD to wiin the game. Not sure if the Oregon game of the TT game was more egregious. How do some of these refs keep their jobs?

Amazingly enough, I think even the writers in Oklahoma dropped their requirement about "not looking like a bunch of OU homers" and did stick up for OU for a change. Even the national guys seemed to know we got "bent over" that day. I was at a game out here and taped it, then I was in absolute shock as I saw those awful calls all occur on the Sand Ags' final drive. Someone even wrote something like, "...In Lubbock, Texas, you can stand on a can of tuna and see for miles, but you can't see the goal line...."

    NMSooner80

  • I would put the 88 game first for these reasons:

    1. It was for a national championship;
    2. It was basketball and would be our first in that sport;and
    3. We owned Kansas that year until that game.

    It still haunts me...

That LSU dominated us in the national game was only because of the USC blowout...same with Florida. We could have easily won three national championships under Stoops, but take away the Jason's pick six and his overthrow of Kejuan Jones...we win... I wonder why no one mentions the spies Saban had to see our formations during practice either...ethically challenged.

The Oregon game was just larceny, closely followed by Texas Tech and then the tie in Dallas...I was there...what a miserable game.
