More on Boulware Hiring

OU Head Football Coach Bob Stoops added the last piece to his coaching staff when he announced Friday that he hired former Auburn assistant Coach Jay Boulware.

  • I think the 3 new coaching hires Stoops has made are very good. The emphasis on recruiting skills is important as OU faces tougher competition for Texas talent. Further, this is a good and new infusion of coaching talent. I also think the addition of someone who will focus more on special teams will be invaluable. I worry about the on hand talent for the DL and LB this year. I think there is talent for the secondary. Even with the QB situation unsettled, there is ample talent there. Overall, the offense will be okay and perhaps much better than last year. Even if we recruit lights out this year, those HS recruits will be a year or 2 away. The last 2 years of mediocre recruiting and lacking of recruits in several key positions may haunt us for a couple of years. Yet, I really believe OU is headed in the right direction. Boulware should be an excellent addition.

  • I'd love to know a little more biographical information. He was born in OKC, but did he grow up in OK. He also played at TX, was he recruited by OU? Those were the Gibbs years and we were on probation for the early part of that period. Did that play a role in his recruiting? I was in school during most of the Gibbs years, so I'm always curious about things surrounding this period.

  • Hopefully this turns out to be a great hire. Now maybe the tight end position will be a factor in the game plan again. OU has some talented tight ends on campus and hopefully coach Boulware can develop them into another weapon since they were virtually non existent last year.

.......I know that these situations happen but how does it work with signing a contract with a school.........some kind of escape clause with no penalties if a guy has a change of mind or gets another offer he would rather take?

First part of the 90's, either McWilliams or Macovich.

“I think he is a good solid recruiter. He is a guy that is going to go out there and have just a handful of guys to recruit and he is going to do a really good job with them. He is not afraid to go out there and work hard on the recruiting trail and do what he needs to do to get guys in. I think at Auburn he recruited parts of the state of Florida in the Orlando and Jacksonville areas.”

Compared to the comments on Boulware's coaching, this is a little restrained ("just a handful of guys"). But the area is good, and the SEC background plus time in Texas couldn't be better.

  • If he's just an average recruiter but one of the best special teams coordinators in the country, then it's a great hire!!! At that position, special teams is more important than recruiting IMO.

  • Hey guys, just dropping in from the Auburn site to offer my opinion:

You guys got a good one. As for special teams, it was one of the few bright spots over the last couple of years. If there were any assistants that our fan base wanted to keep from the previous staff, it was by far Boulware. He is a top notch ST coach.

He has done a great job with TEs as well. Lutzenkirchen will find his way to an NFL team this year and would have been a top ranked NFL prospect if it hadn't been for a couple of injuries and a disastrous season last year. Boulware started a great foundation with some of our younger TEs as well, as was evident when Lutz was sidelined.

Recruiting? We haven't recruited any kickers until the most recent recruiting class and he locked up two of the top kickers in the nation. He may not be an ACE recruiter, but he attracts guys that will play for him including numerous high rated TEs over the last couple of years.

I think he will be a great addition to your staff.
