...or, Mark Rodgers doesn't know what he's talking about. wouldn't be the first time.

  • I think it'd be fantastic if Mike returns! Hopefully Martinez took another job and Mike will take over dbacks and be co-defensive coordinator with Brent again. That's when the defense was a consistent top 10 defense every year!

I agree it would be great and hope to see him back but James made some comments regarding this that made a lot of sense in that V would probably not take or be happy with a reduction in responsibilities and from everything else he said it would mean that someone moves on and Mike assumes that role only. Besides recruiting, this is the topic that I have the most interest in right now and hope it turns out a win win situation.

I could handle us losing both Venables and Martinez. Perhaps Shipp could handle both dtackles and linebackers and let Mike coach the secondary, then just bring in someone else to coach special teams. How's that for a win win?

To me, if any coach deserves to go, it's Patton.

  • I heard him when he stated this on the radio and he said that he has now heard from two different, and supposedly reliable sources that OU will bring back Mike after the bowl game. You never know with Rogers. His info can be hit and miss at times but it at least sounds like a possibility.

I do not know anything about Martinez but with V I think he needs to adjust his defensive philosophies and coach to his players strengths and adjust around their weaknesses, dummy it up so to speak. I do not want him gone just frustrated with seeing the same mistakes time after time from the same players and that alone tells me that someone is confused and just does not get it or is buying in to what he is selling. Confidence is everything and when what you are doing is failing you lose it and your edge.

Haven't been able to run block, that's for sure. But what is frustrating is that 90% of the time, I can tell when we are going to run by the way we line up. If my dumb@$$ can see it, I'm sure the opposition can see it as well.

I know right from wrong. Wrong is the fun one.

  • If Mike is coming back then it has to be a defensive coach leaving...you aren't going to for example have Mike coach the O line.

Interesting few weeks between now and signing date.

Well it's not really about what coach V would like it's about Bob looking out for himself and what's best for the program. I personally think this going to happen don't know who he will replace maybe Brent will take one of those jobs that he is supposedly always being offered. Bob knows football very well and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that since Mike left this teams biggest issue outside of special teams has been defense. Who knows Mike may very well be a hell of a special teams coach as well. Also another thing to remember is that Mike is Bobs best friend and blood is thicker than water.

  • I agree about Patton, but I don't get the hard on to fire Martinez? He's a good recruiter and he's had ONE year. The problem with the D Backs was personnel (basically safety) AND the lack of ANY kind of push from the DTs.

until we see some actual facts about this situation, gotta agree with wilsonIII... haven't even heard any remote speculation regarding this from the OU insider staff, so i think we outta sit tight on jumping to conclusions.

Just hitting on what James said on this subject, I do not see Stoops firing or demoting V whether he deserves it or not and that is just my opinion not trying to pick a fight and like James, me and many others said is someone will have to go and if you think about it if that were not the case he would probably already be on the staff.

Ok, sure, great but like I said someone has to go! I feel James is right on this! I do not see a co-coordinator situation happening and I do not see Stoops firing V, I also do not here any Venables to this school or that school rumors. What I do know is Mike has turned down the jobs that have been publicly offered and it gives me and those of you that want him back hope that something is going on for that to happen. Just for the record I think V is a very good coach that needs to make some changes to what he is trying to do and hope he does but if not he must be replaced just like you or I if we do not get our jobs done.

The problem I see with the love fest for Mike is that the Big 12 is a totally different animal on the offensive side of the ball since 2003. Back then only OU and Tech were spread teams. With the exceptions of Texas (where they have been a dismal failure at recruiting a QB) and KSU, I think everyone runs it: OU, OSU, Baylor, Tech, KU, ISU, WVU and TCU. They may not all be real up tempo, but they all spread you out and make your LBs cover an eiligible receiver. With playing these types of offenses most of the time, you really have to be able to get consistent pressure with your DTs and DEs. I'm not saying you don't blitz from time-to-time, but to hold these types of offenses down, you have to get consistent pressure on the QB with the DL. I don't care what you are playing behind the DL (zone, man, bump-and-run, cover 2, cover 3, etc.) without a really good DL, these teams are going to score and get a lot of yardage. Without a really, really good DL, OU will not have a top 10 defense. They may be really good, but from a statistics standpoint, they won't be top 10 in any defensive category.

    It is just that simple.

So unless Mike can conjure up some serious talent at DT (SEC All-American talent), I don't think just having Mike would make much if any difference.

Actually, I think if we got better at man and bump and run we could bring more pressure on the QB.

At least change the DCs gameplan from a wide open, pick us apart approach that they currently enjoy.

I'd like a more attacking D and less reacting. For years now we find some excuse for why players didn't react correctly.

To me what you are saying is what makes everything else look as bad as it does. Hitting those guys off the line and playing our best on theirs would disrupt their rhythm and would make the pass rush more effective. I agree with you and hope we work on more tight man coverage and hopefully starting with the bowl game. You do not have to do this on every play, you can check out of it to jack with their play calling as well.

Interestingly, the Stoops brothers were once predominantly man coverage guys, and then switched philosophy to cover two. They did that to adjust to new offenses.

I think as far as we are concerned, it's time to make another adjustment. Our opponents have a good book on us.

    To some degree...yes.

Tackling was horrible...Jefferson want backwards IMHO. There were mental mistakes as well.

Keeping Lynn in too long during Tech was a coaching decision. Biting too hard on the play action during Baylor was a mental decision.

It could be personnel, but it could also be coaching....
