Mike Stoops in, Willie Martinez out...

  • Db's main problem. Not coached correctly. receivers running free 5yards downfield.

The same thing happened under Mike Stoops. Rashaun Woods is still open 8 years later. Does this quote seem familiar, "Their defensive backs are known for sitting on short passes,'' Woods said. "When they do that, they're susceptible to the double move.''?

  • In addition, Martinez' secondary last year was louded as being really good.

  • It is so much about the scheme right now. If you remember back in '99 when the Stoops Brothers got to OU we were running more man to man coverage in the secondary. But we did not have the personnel to run that and after we got torched by Colorado in Boulder (Pee Wee Woods anyone?) they switched to this cover 2/Tampa defense.

Unfortunately... it is time to change again. If this year's defensive performance doesn't prove it... I don't know what will.

Not just scheme of defense, but scheme of offense's Mike's defense did not go against spread teams.

  • I think the bigger problem was no push from the DTs. DEs are great, but we've lacked a push from up the middle most of the year. THAT would help the DBs out tremendously!!!

ahhh the last game that woods played in against us (the let'er rip) game we shut him down and destroyed the osu team coached by les miles. i watched how we finally played woods and all we did was short and longed him with a cb and a safety all over the field. it was a thing of beauty. at times the stoops brothers can be a tad stubborn about things but eventually they do learn and make the adjustments needed. i'm not sure if b. venerables is able to make those same type of in game adjustments.

  • Remember the A&M and OSU games in 2002? It was bombs away and our secondary was torched. Be careful what you wish for.

That was after mediocre OSU beat us two years in a row. As Klein mentioned, 2002 was also the year that we made Reggie McNeil look like a Heisman candidate in College Station.

I'm a big fan of Mike Stoops, but pretending his secondaries were never torched by inferior teams is selective recall.

  • i'll take the over all top 10 defensive rankings that we attained under mike stoops any day of the week what we had then was a sure tackling hard hitting agressive defense football team what we have now is a gary gibbs like read and react no wrapping up on tackles type of defense. we continue to slide down in defensive rankings but the man love of Brent Venerables is so strong for some that they just can't see how bad we play defense.

  • Martinez is/was very respected in the SEC. I was really impressed by the secondary last year but this year I have to wonder what the issue is. Same DC, same DB coach. So who knows if M. Stoops would have a positive impact on the secondary.

The obvious difference is no Nelson and Carter.

We need serious difference makers in the middle of our DL. We need guys who are monsters down there. If our DL can go out and get pressure immediately and help stop the run then our LBs and Secondary can make the plays.

I believe the scheme we run plays into that. But our DTs up the middle are good, not great. Once we get that I don't think there will be as many problems with our defense. We need terrors down low at the point of attack, people who require double teams freeing up the LBs to make tackles and our secondary won't have to defend against the pass for such a long period of time.

Often times this year we've seen opposing QBs have as much time as they want to throw the ball. Our DL has to get penetration and get in the QBs face.

I really think that's the major difference between us and "really good" defenses.

  • I am so tired of bring back Mike Stoops... His DB coaching was awful! I have never seen a team get beat on play action more than a Mike Stoops team.

Why not just bring back Blake!

I'm hell when I'm well.. And, I am never sick!

I really think that's the major difference between us and "really good" defenses.

I think our DEs are as good as any tandem we've had. I also feel King and Washington have given us depth that make the DE position as strong as we could hope for.

No there isn't a Gerald McCoy, Tommie Harris or even Dusty Dvoracek. I do think Dan Noble would have been big time and just the guy we need.

Nonetheless, we aren't weak at DT we are serviceable. The blame simply falls on play calling. The strategy in the 1st qtr was obviously stout and worked. But as usual, we outsmart ourselves and fear they will successfully counter it.

If our guys got too tired to maintain that pressure, then the rotating of fresh bodies should have started sooner.

I saw multiple plays of 3 man and 4 man rush and most everytime Griffin enjoyed the time to burn us. This year, Griffin has shown to be the most accurate passer who doesn't throw picks. You are playing with fire if you give him time to look around or even run around. Once he got comfortable, he had a Heisman night.

Mike Stoops never wanted the QB to feel comfortable.

  • Do you not remember the problems with big plays we had under Mike? Fans were upset because receivers kept getting behind our DB's!

Things are rarely perfect or totally bad. Reality=closer to the middle. Never as bad as it seems, never as good as it seems.

  • I watched Arizona's DBs get torched for 4+ years wondering how they could be so poorly coached each game? Then I would remember all the bombs that O.U. gave up when Mike coached here. Not a coincidence.

There were some games like that, but not many and most teams that pulled it off were pretty good. I'd take the occassional Brandon Everedge getting beat deep over the frequent 500 yard games to the likes of Cincinatti and Utah St.
