More than a few people in the world of College Football thought that Petrino would survive this because of the highly competitive nature of the SEC. Perhaps that conference is not quite as "win-at-all-costs" as some people seem to believe.
I think firing Petrino was the right decision for Arkansas.

I honestly don't understand anyone who thought he wouldn't be fired. This is not about having an affair, it's about hiring your mistress for $100,000 a year on the taxpayer's dime. That leaves the university wide open for lawsuits and anyone who knowingly allows that is asking to be fired themselves.
And it doesn't even matter if their athletic department is financially independent like OU's, it is still a university/state position and subject to all that implies. If he had left her in the Foundation job, completely separate and paid by donations, he would probably still have a job to help with the upcoming alimony & child support payments.

Arkansas football will not be making the top ten for a while even with an experienced team next year. Like Mike Leach, a lot of their success was Petrino's offensive playcalling. Look at what happened to Louisville after he left. They had an experienced team coming back the year after he left and completely folded.

Looks Like Petrino Is Out
