Looking Ahead: Linebackers

  • Yea i understand tht...but hes stuck on west coast talent...most of your talented defensive players are in the south

    soonerfan22

  • He is probably frustrated with LB usage and coaching since BV left

  • OU has no great linebakers at this time; however, the linebackers would look a lot better if they played behind a strong defensive line.

Bama's players are bigger, stronger AND faster. OU's smaller defensive players are not that quick.

  • kish has a hard nose. And he keeps it right up Mikes asss. Thats the only reason I can figure why he still has a job. Unless he has a picture of Mike poking a goat and is using it for ransom.

Can't be that bad of an idea, don't have any down votes.

I was talking about getting a coach fired, not an board poster. We can say crazy stuff!!!

  • If Millard could play LB thats where he would be. LB's make much more money than FB's in the NFL. He wasn't a good enough LB in HS or he would have been recruited as one. This is one of the dumbest arguments on this board and political sean on kref.

    OU MAJOR

  • I would say at the very least poor, a couple strong games and then nothing. What we have is a bunch of chihuahuas trying to shoulder tackle pit bulls. The difference in several loses of late is tackling fundamentals, too many 4-5 yard gains turned into 20 30 40.

  • The cupboard is about as empty as Shnellies group.

I believe he was recruited by everyone, except us and a couple of others, to play LB. However, he did not want to be a MLB, he wanted to be a fullback, which is one of the reasons he is at OU. He is plenty capable of being a damn fine MLB.

  • The English league. He probably will be a star!

  • Does OU need better linebackers? Yes. But it all starts with a good defensive line. A great D-line can make an average secondary look really good, and it can free the linebackers to roam around and make plays. Look at Travis Lewis' freshman year for example. Sure he was a good player, but he also had Gerald McCoy and Adrian Taylor up front that freed him to around and make plays.

  • people, the reason we are trying to think of a LB solution is because the coaching staff has whiffed both in recruiting and in scheme. Our whole dam defense is gone. We return 2 starters, maybe 3 if Wort stays. That may be not a bad thing since our D sucked so bad anyways. If Nelson and Wort come back and Millard plays middle LB we would have a solid LB group. I'm sure Mike will have some DB's , There the cupboard is not bare there, we actually have talent to coach. If Casey Russell meets expectations and we have another DL step up we should be ok there. Now DE.....we have 10 to pick from. Surely we can find 2 to start. Now our D would be pretty solid and Mike can scheme like a regular guy instead of trying to figure out weird schemes.

This would buy us time to recruit since we havent in the last couple of years. But if this happens again, heads must roll including Bob if he wants to play hardheaded.

Now regarding the offense, heuple has to be demoted based on his performance. Bring in a true OC that has experience and can think. I'd even take Chuck Long back. Or Bamas OC, he knows how to run an offense. but replacing heuple is not an option, it is a MUST. Patton and kittle too if we need to to get back to where we were. Kish is on a short lease. I;d probably go ahead and fire his asss. If I performed on my job like he has I can guarantee you my butt would be gone in a new york minute.

You are looking in the wrong cupboard. OU has some really good young LB talent. Shannon is going to be a beast.

    You have to be kidding!!!!

  • I believe Shannon is going to be a really good MLB.

I also think Wort would have been a good WLB.

My chief question is why Corey Nelson, 7th best player in Texas his senior year and committed to A&M when we stole him at the last minute, didn't develop into an A&M-quality LB. I've always thought Brent was a good LB coach, but maybe he could tell them where to be but not how to get there or what to do once they were there.

I will say this: several of our LBs are wonderful at kick coverage.

This year's LB recruiting suggests we were trying to get bigger LBs who were still fast. We whiffed on Mitchell and Levenberry (Brent was his Buddy) and ended up with 3 much lower rated prospects, one big ILB and two athletic OLBs - oops, then we lost the ILB. At any rate, we were trying to get just the guys everyone says we need, we just got lesser versions of them without the MLB. Let the coaching begin!

Evidently it is somehow synonymous with goal line.
