Latest whorn realignment fantasy.

  • From a poster on OB.com that says he's connected of course. Everyone over there is coming unglued with excitement. woot

"Texas already has a package on the table from ESPN that would send every sport to the ACC except Football.

Football would remain independent and get 8 home games and 4 road games that are guaranteed nat'l television on either an ESPN network, ABC, or LHN. 4 of the 12 game schedule would be against ACC teams each year. The contract would pay UT over $1 Billion.

    You heard it hear first."

  • I find it hard to believe that ESPN would agree to such obvious pandering. I know they're in cahoots with UT to ensure the LHN is viable, but I would imagine that the backlash from other CFB teams would be too much for ESPN to bear.

    That's a knee slapper.

  • And no path to the BCS, I bet that makes them real happy. An OU would not play them to help the SOS to make the independent bid.

  • Makes me want to root against the Horns more than I already do. I know Texas is a big state but outside of Texas-they really don't have a national following. Everyone knows they are very arrogant. I can't believe ESPN would go for this and risk making the other schools upset. Not to mention, Texas isn't exactly at the top of the football world now. Having said that, the Hitler youth at work did hear a lot of ACC talk this week though.

  • ESPN has a relationship to the ACC, and I do know that my father (Canyoneer) expects they will either go that way or as an Independent..in fact the hears that there is a deal brewing with the ACC/Tejas and ESPN as well...

And OU and OSU are as good as in the PAC..

  • Texas has a problem, which is that the institution has made the sporting public weary of their self-serving manipulations. If in fact, Texas pursues the ACC relationship, remaining indie in football, I say let them have it their way. They will face an uphill battle getting into BCS games without a major conference affiliation. That will be used as a hammer by their recruiting competitors like OU. On to the Pac-12. Let's roll.

Makes sense to me. Lots of TV sets in the east and lots of Texas ball caps at the malls in every major city on the east coast.

Young people love Country music and they think it all comes from Texas. Even ESPN's ad with the cowboy that says "Van Gundy" romanticizes Texas. We all know how arrogant Texas is, but the average fan on the east coast doesn't know what we are talking about. They all think Toby Keith and everything else that is Cool and west of the Mississippi is from Texas.

Everybody says UT would have no BCS route but ND has a sweet deal.

  • OU would continue to play UT but I wish UT wouldn't get other good games on an Indy schedule.

The billion dollars seems high to since they are already paying them 300 million. Basically, it would be like ESPN owns UT. What a piss poor choice of schools to go out and buy.

    Deep Red

  • Sorry but I think Texas number one priority is keeping the Big12 but knowing OU is fed up and wants Texas to be more sensitive to the other members and possibly leaving I can see every bit of this transpiring except the amount. Texas would give anything to have 8 home games (revenue windfall) and play basketball in the ACC. The ACC gets big 3 tier rights on games and national matchups.

ND has a sweet deal to get to a BCS bowl game but giving two schools the same exception and you are virtually eliminating half of the opportunity for non- BCS conference schools to qualify for a BCS bowl when there is extensive media pressure to provide them more access. Consequently I doubt Texas would get extended ND's deal. In fact I have my doubts with the movement to the mega-conferences I have my doubts ND will continue to have their deal with the next BCS contract 4-5 years from now. I think the pressure will be there to join one of the super conferences.

Moreover easy access to the BSC bowl games does not provide easy access to the BCS Championship game, a Texas desire. Participation in the BCS game is normally an extension of an undefeated season plus a difficult schedule which I think Texas will have problems accomplishing as an independent. JMHO.

I think it becomes a decision for the Texas administration between what they want most easy championship game access or the LHN with its $300 million revenue stream. It will be difficult for them to get both.

The problems we face today exist because those that work for a living are out numbered by those that vote for a living.

  • I think the ACC acceptance today of Pittsburgh and Syracuse drive a nail into the concept of allowing Texas in the ACC for all sports except football. Texas now definitely has to fully align with a conference. There can be no question the movement to mega-conferences is well underway.

As I see it there are 13 teams (UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, WVU, Cincy, USF, TCU, Missouri, Kansas, KSU, ISU, Baylor and Texas) available for 10 slots in the 4 mega-conferences (PAC? 1, ACC 2, SEC 3 and B10 4) if you assume OU, OSU and Tech to the PAC?.

What I think might happens is Kansas, Missouri, Rutgers and Virginia move to the B10, Va Tech, Maryland and TCU go to SEC. USF and WVU go to the ACC with UConn, Cincy and Louisville replacing Va Tech, Virginia and Maryland who leave the ACC for the SEC. Texas goes to the PAC?

That means that KSU, ISU and Baylor find a new home in the Mountain West. Just a guess and one that leave the B10 unhappy with Missouri and Kansas. Ditto the SEC with TCU.

It's being reported on ESPN that the ACC wants Rutgers and UConn to go to 16. To me, that almost certainly eliminates any deal with Texass. I doubt any of those schools want all their other sports to have to travel to Austin. They don't have Texass' money to pay for it.

  • From what I read it sounds to me like the ACC told the Whorns thanks but no thanks.

  • It appears the LHN is limiting Texas' options. I think Texas could spin this the right way, drop the network and save the conference. With the Big East falling apart, there are options for the Big 12 to remain alive.
