Kendal Thompson/ the standout winner of the QB backup race!

  • After Landry directed the first drive of the game that ended with a fg, Bell threw a long pass downfield and scored on a circus catch by Jazz Reynolds, After LJ's first series, he never saw the field again.

Drew and Blake alternated most of the day and I thought Drew got the best of that action, but neither could get their team in the end zone with the exception of BB's long pass to Reynolds. .

Late in the game, Kendal Thompson finally got 2 or 3 series and looked clearly the best of the backups. He took he team down to score on a very impressive drive where he kept the drive al\ive with some great running skill despite his blue jersey. He threw the ball with great finese and showed he had that IT for moving his team.

I don't know what is going on with Kenny Stills, he dropped 2 passes; one that should have been an easy score. Metroyer is going to be a star, he doesn't let anything get by him. He still needs to learn how to get open though.

  • Blake Bell threw the TD catch, had the better stats and was more consistent if I recall correctly.

  • Actually, the only drive Landry was in on, the first one of the game, ended in a FG. Jaz's TD catch was from Bell. Thompson did look good when he got the opportunity but the offense and defense were probably made up of half walkons and 3rd teamers.

I thought all the other 3 QB's had their moments. To me, Drew looked the best of the others. He hit some nice crossing routes.

It's hard to take a lot from these type of games but, to me, defense needs the majority of the attention.

I know right from wrong. Wrong is the fun one.

Thompson competition was against the 3's that last drive.

I think Bell and Allen really both looked solid although Bell was the only of the two that got his team in the end zone...very nice play too.

  • Thompson wasn't going against the 3's...he was going against the 2's but yes he had 3's working with him on the offense. "Imagine if he was throwing balls to the same guys Bell & Allen had all day...might have even looked better...He wasn't given the same reps all day as the others but made some great plays & if anyone doesn't want to give the kid the credit or the respect to atleast be in the conversation then so be it. He will just continue to prove most wrong. Kid has the IT factor. Just wait til he is given equal reps & opportunity.

By the time Kendall got to the D was tired too. Let's not forget as soon as a drive ended, another started so there really wasn't any rest for the Offense or the Defense which has much more impact on the D. Based on your post, you'd think Kendall was workign against a fresh defense which he most assuredely wasn't.

It's always said, the two most important things to a Sooner fan is God and who's the backup QB at Oklahoma (because they always believe he's better than the starter). In this case, the poster lept a RsFR over two really complete QBs. When will we he proclaim him better than Landry?

  • If Thompson is going to be better, it would be better if he starts next year. It seems that we are going to be fine, regardless which of the three wins the job next year.

This is nonsensical. In order to have 1's, 2's and 3's OU would need 33 quality defensive players which they don't. There wasn't a time during the game that OU was platooning players this way, they were mixing players in during the scrimmage and as the scrimmage wore on more players were getting to play and by the end the benches were emptied and everyone who suited out got to play during the day.

That being said, it would be impossible to say what platoon OU was using. It was a nice game all around for the QB's but to come to a conclusion that KT was the best of the backups is idiocy on grand scale. As it would be for the other as well. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Some thought it was clearly Allen (most of the professional prognosticators), most thought it was Bell and now the original poster here seems to think it's KT. What is clear is that Stoops says it's 1a and 1b Allen/Bell.

When I see these definite kinds of posts like KT is clearly the best, I see it for the nonsense that it is.

  • Never will you hear me jump K Thompson over Landry, but to suggest that he outshined the other backups may be wrong, but idiosy is inapppropriate. He was very poised in that last drive and showed some outstanding footwork to keep his drive alive. Personally, I was impressed. The coaches have also said that he has been giving the #1 defense fits operating on the scout team. Maybe we should not sell him short.

I agree he is just going to have to be patient plain and simple. Landry stayed,Allen stayed, and Bell still has lots of eligibility. That is not to say he can't win the job just that he is the least experienced. KT is indeed underrated by most OU fans.

I'm on board with this; have thought since he was benig recruited; he's got that "it" factor and that is what a QB needs; plus he has skills that are excellent; we could definitely win with him; I hope he gets to play some this year

  • I think he is clearly the fourth best QB of the group for the Offense that OU runs.

    OU MAJOR

  • I can tell you that Canyoneer has seen both BB and KT in camps, although in the past. And has heard through the coaching grapevine as well.

KT will be in the QB hunt when Landry leaves. He is a quick learner, a great athlete, and although he has a "hitch" in his passing motion he is working on a better release. His footwork is superior. And he is a student of the game. Don't be surprised if he makes the QB situation very competative next year. Canyoneer thinks he wil end up starting some day, if he continues to grow and respond to the challenge.

Nice to have this problem. OU has better QB's sitting on the bench than tejas has starting, no doubt about it.

  • Hits like a double standard on these boards & with fans.. Most get excited about other QB's & toot their horns but someone gets on here and says that they were impressed with a kid that noone seems to wanna give any respect to in the future QB race...BUT they have seen him finally in some sort of action & was impressed. Heck, Stoops was by comments in his post game presser & Josh flat out said it in his & I quote. " I was very very impressed with Kendals performance today".. stated that he was smart, made good decisions & also praised him for his field management..clock, protection, runs & reads....even stated that he was put in a tough situation...what does that really mean...let me break it down for you like this...Allen has had 1,000 of reps even Bell & yes they both should be ahead of KT due to just that fact. But KT has only had maybe 25 reps in our offense prior to the game & performed the way he did.. I know coaches were impressed with that & they know he hasn't been given even a fraction of the reps as the others...Now if anyone can't give the kid credit for stepping out there and looking poised & in control then they aren't understanding the true flow of the art the position...That's what he means. He was impressed cause he knows he has some very nice potential & could -- said COULD close the gap on the 2 in front of him if given the same opportunities. I am not here to proclaim that he is better, just saying after knowing the cards he has been dealt with, which was a stacked deck in terms of reps & opportunities...The Kid merely showed that he deserves a bit of respect and a fair opportunity just as the others...PERIOD!!!

That Jaz Reynold's catch was a push-off, should have been offensive PI.

It is pertinent to the topic, was in direct response to your post and it was a push-off clear as day. Sorry if that does not jibe with your agenda.

  • It was most obvious that Bell was the class of the backups. Not sure what spring game you were watching, but Bell was clicking on all cylinders on Saturday. Thompson and Drew were just OK in their efforts.

Incorrect on both points. Your point is not relavent to the performance of the quarterbacks. I do not have an agenda. If I did, what do you think it would be?

    schooner9

  • The threat of bad weather kept me away from the game. I wish I had attended now, because the weather wasn't that bad and there is no agreement about player performance from this board discussion. Most all the comments seem to come from people who weren't even there, which probably adds to the lack of a consistent opinion.

  • I still give Drew the slight edge because I don't trust BB's arm, but it looks like it is becoming a coin flip as they are VERY even. Hopefully one of them will step up for fall camp.

I give KT credit for his abilities and attitude as well as the other intangibles. I don't think he is even close to competing against Bell or Allen at this stage of his tenure. I won't rule it out, but if I were forced to place a bet, I would short it. I just don't see it happening.

  • If God forbid, Landry went down on first game, who would be the starter base on this performance?

Thanks for the post. I remember when KT returned from the QB camp out West and Canyoneer had some very nice things to say about him. Seems like some nice comparisons were also made between KT and the kid coming in this fall. What I have noticed about Canyoneer is that he often knows of what he speaks, thus I am not going to rule KT out just yet. Did KT have a surgery over the past couple of months? Shoulder maybe?

  • As you know the coaches have said this performance is only a small piece of the puzzle, but it sounded like Drew was very efficient at running the offense, so I'm betting they would go with him. Blake sounds like he's "getting it" and could run the offense if need be. Kendall sounds like he's got a chance to compete strongly NEXT year with Blake.

    hooknladder

  • There's no need to mention KT in the QB race until Bell's senior year and that will be the race to back up Bell. As for those claiming he has the IT factor really? He's never played a down in college, but somehow has the IT factor? I'm sorry, but if your basing him having the IT factor off of high school then that's laughable, cause every QB OU recruits has the IT factor in high school. Thompson is a solid prospect and may turn out be a great one, but he's not jumping Bell and Allen on the depth chart he's going to have to wait his turn.
