Joe Paterno's famous quote about Barry Switzer...

  • Joe Paterno stayed at Penn State because he "didn't want to leave college football to the Barry Switzers and Jackie Sherills of the world."

I was at the 1985 Orange Bowl where OU beat Penn State 25-10. I'm sure Jerry Sandusky was on the sidelines. I wonder if Paterno knew about it back then - and said nothing - because Penn St was pretty good in those days. Even though they couldn't beat Jamelle, Keith Jackson, Lydell Carr and an awesome Sooner defense.

It's now a fact that Paterno knew about it in 1998 and did nothing. NOTHING.

Switzer is a Vatican saint compared to Joe Paterno.

I hope he's burning as we speak...

  • Paterno knew about it in "98" and lied. He knew about it again in 2001 and once again talked the University President OUT of doing anything. The word hypocrite comes to mind. Selfish might be another...

  • Paterno and Switzer became friends. They went on cruises with their wives.
I wouldn't wish anyone to burn for eternity.

  • Amen to that, if he knew the Lord he won't be there. God will forgive even the "worse" sins that we label. In His eyes no sin is greater than another. God bless Jo Pa even if he made a serious mistake in lack of judgement.

    That's funny.

They went on junkets together? I guess that means Paterno told everyone, including Switzer, about Sandusky and nobody cared.

    Shame on Barry...

    LTSooner

  • I wonder if there is more to the story. Paterno and Sandusky worked that close for so many years. Did Joe know before 98, but there is no record of it.

Maybe Paterno was worse than we know.

There is no such thing as a "worse" sin. I still dont know what he was thinking by trying to cover all this up.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

Paterno loved Penn State too much to see clearly. It still shocks me the whole thing. I feel sorry for Paterno's family who is helpless in all this. My son called Joe Paterno's wife for a school project and she was extremely nice. It is a shame when good people make such incredibly horrible decisions that are contrary to their self. Penn State and all the wonderful students and alums it is a sad black mark. Sandusky what a sick individual and you can't pray enough for those brave victims.

  • Some articles worth reading:

    1. Spanier is not a good person - read this: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--graham-spanier-penn-state-freeh-report-joe-paterno-curtis-enis-jeff-nalley.html

    2. Joe knew all about it and likely led the cover up - read this: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--joe-paterno-blame-freeh-report-jerry-sandusky-penn-state-tarnished-legacy.html

    3. Penn State could be facing huge liability - read this: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--penn-state-civil-suits-sandusky-victims-cost-joe-paterno-freeh-report.html

I hope Spanier goes to jail. If Paterno was alive I think he belongs in jail. I think Penn State should be closed or at a minimum football ended. They put football in front of boys being abused.

I think those commenting in the liability article about six figure settlements are way off base. I think Penn State is looking at punitive damages or the potential of punititive damages and will pay million dollar settlements to each victim.

  • The worst part is they let him keep doing it. Come skipping thru the locker room singing little boy blue come blow my horn. I wonder if the players knew also ?

    powervault

  • This is a rather recent invention and a joke: "In His eyes no sin is greater than another." Would you rather me "think" about murdering you, or actually murder you? In one you have totally cooperated with your own will and have physically given in to a great evil. In the other you consider it.... Now, Watson, WHICH one carries more culpability?

"There is a sin that leads to death...." Scripture can be a complicated issue and is rarely as simple as some would have us think.

  • Rick Reilly on Joe Paterno:

  • Paterno did apologize for the catty remark about "not leaving college football to the Barry Switzers of the world." I'll give him credit for that.

But, I also still remember how that game in January of '86 was pretty much billed - "Good" (PSU) vs. "Evil" (OU). I wonder how many of the non-Oklahoma media types, all of whom were no doubt openly rooting for the Nittanys, would like to correct their original stance on those two teams...

    NMSooner80

  • Thanks for the info DenverS. NMS, love your second paragraph. What Barry did pales in comparison, not just to Paterno but to others as well. Strange as it may seem to some, I've always had a lot of respect for Barry Switzer as a coach and as a person. I remember him as being color-blind and always caring for his players.

    bsooner93

  • What a great article by Rick Reilly. Says it all. I don't believe in Heavon or Hell. Apparently Paterno didn't either.

There is a hell for sure and Joe is the new captain of the boat that takes folks there across the river Styx, too many coaches down there and not enough players to field another team yet.

    oufisherman

  • Joe apologized, but the recent example is clearly why you dont throw rocks in glass houses. He looks more the fool now.

The PSU admin and Joe used the same logic that was common in previous generations for these problems. Cover it up...its better for everyone. The same thing happened in my church 30 years ago...the problem was covered up and the bad guy was ran out of town for the good of all. It was always bad logic but used more often than any of us will ever know in the past. Now we know better and we certainly knew better in the late 90's. Ironic how learned men in higher education seem so small and backwards now. The victims deserved better, and now nothing can truly fix it.

Peace: Agree with your commentary. Its a sad thing to watch "good people" who had done many things in the world make such a large mistake and cloud their entire life. Hopefully this sends a strong message to everyone out there about doing the right thing...would be nice if something good came from this.

  • This is the kind of thread where Christians, Catholics and all other religious zealots get to look down their nose at the rest of society. I love to see the judgement coming from you people in these situation. It only further reinforces my non-belief.

Amen. If he can forgive Peter for denying him three times, he can surely forgive anything else.

"With Nebraska trying to leave, we felt like we needed to send them out with a loss, and we did." -Ryan Broyles-

  • I'm not sure I've ever read a more scathing sports piece than Reilly's. But, sadly, spot on!!

    SoonerinTopeka

  • I read somewhere (maybe on this board) of someone wondering if Paterno had maybe obtained assisted suicide after he was fired. It's a very strange coincidence that he gets fired, develops lung cancer and dies in a matter of a few months and thus avoids all the vile details of his actions or 'non-actions'. His family is not helping his cause and they really need to stop with their public comments. So sad that someone was so consumed with self-worth to avoid doing what's right!

    TYCAT947

  • Heard on the radio today that 3 men have came forward today saying Sandysky molested them in the 70s. So I think it's safe to say Joe knew long before 98.
