Joe Castiglione on new Big XII Commissoner Bob Bowlsby

  • (OU Sports Information)

University of Oklahoma Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione shared the following comments relative to the hiring of Bob Bowlsby as the Big 12 Conference Commissioner.

“Bob Bowlsby is the right person at the right time for the Big 12 Conference. Our conference and our member institutions will benefit immensely from his proven pedigree of leadership. Colleagues throughout the profession have long admired Bob’s innate ability to build a consensus utilizing the wisdom, wit and skill that characterize his unique personal style. Bob Bowlsby’s vision, passion and core values paired with the rich tradition of our conference make this a perfect match and further solidify the status of the Big 12 Conference as a premier destination for the pursuit of academic and athletic distinction.”

  • What I like about the Bowlsby hire is that Joe C. will remain at OU. Joe C. has done a lot for OU since he's been here and will continue to do so. OU has the best AD in the country, IMO.

  • Hopefully he'll bring in another two teams. We're a good conference, but as long as we're stuck with just 10 teams we're a *has been. (As a conference).

*has been is not the phrase I'm looking for.
But it's early in the day.

  • I disagree. 10 teams may end up being better.

College football is going to a 4-team playoff. Not having a conference championship game is 1 less tough game to win.

An undefeated or 1-loss Big 12 team will always have a great shot to be in contention. With a round robin format, you'll always play the conferences toughest teams which bodes well for strength of schedule and national notoriety.

I too would generally rather have 12, just because you bring in more 'fans' from other parts of the country, but 'Blake Survivor' makes a good point, and it's a fact. If we want more revenue, I'd lean to 12 teams, if we want a better chance at a NC, stick with 10.

That's the problem. Only three or four teams in the conference have a realistic chance at a NC, so you'll have at least 6 (of 10), teams likely voting to bring in more members.

  • Having a Conference Championship game is a great treat for the fans........How wonderful that win over Nebraska in Dallas was.....that game would never have happened without the Championship Game format. There's always a risk of loss like KSU in KC but the win is a BIG win.

According to BBJ on Sports Animal, he said he has heard to watch out for Stanford going after Castiglione.

I'd hate it if they get him, but I could see Joe C making a good candidate for the now-open Stanford job.
