There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.
“For whatever reason we saw more people spreading us out sideline-to-sideline and that made us put more defensive backs on the field, and that was difficult on our linebackers a year ago. This spring we will work to come up with schemes to get our linebackers on the field more.”
When I read interviews like this it becomes clearer to me why OU is not beating the Elite teams anymore. Some of the things OU coaches say to justify their coaching decisions just make me shake my head. I think this is one of the stupidest responses I've ever heard a coach say. Teams running four and five wide receivers formations is nothing new so for him to act like teams were using some special never seen before formations that will take an off-season to come up with new defensive schemes to counter them is absurd!
Controlling the QB run game is all about gap integrity and discipline in the design. Then finding the playmakers to execute. The coaches understand this and they are trying to get it done.

If we make the move to 3-4 then I don't see a lack of depth at linebacker. The reason is our DE's now become LB's. I just can't imagine being able to find 3 guys to play the middle of the line with enough size and talent. Then another 3 guys to rotate out with them. Because basically in a 3-4, your two DE's should be closer to DT size. We can call it what we want but I think it will be closer to a 3-3-5 with undersized players at safety, middle linebacker and the interior line. As far as outside LB's (stand up DE's) go, the move to 3-4 will benefit them greatly.
