I'm leaning toward Bell..*

  • My reasoning is simple "BULK/Power". Our advantage over a lot of teams including the SEC is that we have a ton of players with starting experience on the OL coming back. If we can manage to not have an annual OL crisis of injuries we have a lot of depth with incoming talent too. We have (I believe) one of the best big backs in college football in our backfield. We have a very good blocking true fullback, and a whole slew of good all around backs and potentially another large RB (Ross) or 2 (Williams is up to almost 220lbs) to pound at people. With all of that said, we need a large and mobile QB that can run behind the studs I mentioned. Bell fits the bill and if he's used right, we can pound people into submission and when they give us 1 on 1 with our WR corps, I see the potential for a lot of PA deep bombs.

Having a pound it out, clock control offense also helps a D that has it's confidence shaken and breaking in new talent and philosophy. This season may not be the high flying quick score offense that we've become used to but I'd honestly welcome some big games with some scores like 21-17 rather than 62-55 and this is why I'm leaning toward Bell. On another note it also help prevent QB attrition if we start a Jr. vs. a younger one.

This board is boring so I thought I'd start throwing out some opinions to get people talking. I'm not claiming that Bell is our best QB because we have a whole spring to see that but philosophically I think he fits more into what we need to do to help our D than the other options. Thoughts?

  • I think right now, Bell is definitely the favorite. But, I also think that Trevor Knight is a legit contender for the job. If Bell is the guy, I don't think you'll see a ground-and-pound offense, but I also don't think they'll throw it as much as they did last season. Like Stoops mentioned, you will see the QB run game a lot more this season.

  • I am for the quarterback that can win a lot of games, shows toughness, leadership, command of the offense and game time awareness. My question is how will the other QBs react if they don't win the job?

They better be preparing like they're a starter. Like we've seen before, the back-up quarterback is only one snap away from being the guy.

  • Water is wet. I think Bell can do what Tebow did, and that was tough to stop.

Yes, we need an O that can drive the ball and score while keeping these high powered offenses on the sideline so they don't get in their rhythm and sequence their plays optimally.

While we do have a lot of returning players what makes you think they can produce a power run game? The current group of Oline were recruited for there athletism and pass blocking ability more so than there size, strength and ability to run block. I think we can certainly be better at running the ball especially if we emphasize it and Josh actually calls the game that way, but to think we are gonna be able to just power over everyone is a reach as we don't have the type of lineman for that.

Nailed it. I'm not saying this offensive line can't be successful running the ball, but they aren't equipped to be that kind of offense. To do that, would require them to completely change their entire mentality on offense. That just doesn't work.

  • Maybe Dionte' Savage can help change that O Line culture a little bit! Here's to hoping! We may get to see more of the backups this year. Maybe not a rotation, but I think Bob will be quicker to put in Kendall if the competition is really close, or Kendall/Trevor can bring something different to the O.

Our OLs are plenty big enough to run the football. I do remember a healthy Damian Williams running multiple Marcus Dupree like jaunts down the field when healthy, and many of these same OLs and a few others are back.

If we don't expect to run the ball better, then our new OL coach is already under the gun of a few of our fans before he has even had a chance. This seems Kish 2.0 by these fans.

If Bob wants to run better and run some QB too, and Josh doesn't call it, I could see OC opening up after next season too.

My question is how will Bell act if he doesn't win the job. Everyone has already anointed him the job & I'm sure he had fed into that a tadbit. I hear that competition started as soon as the cotton bowl ended & they have been competing every Wed with 7 on 7 competition for the past 5 wks. One would think Bell would be running circles around the other 2 with all the experience everyone says he has but #'s show differently. Thompson 12 td/1 int. Bell 6 td/5 int . Knight 4 td/ 6 int. But players saying Thompson is shredding the defense & looks more comfortable & if coaches asked the players to make their choice today (most skill players & db's) Thompson would be their unanimous choice. I am telling most of you are just seriously under estimating this kids talents & Qb IQ & abilities. Spring will be his coming out party. Book it!

Isn't this a bit of an insult to Blake Bell. Unlike Tebow, Bell can actually throw the football.

You haven't heard Stoops say much of anything in regards to the QB's other than it will be a open competition & all 3 will have a shot but yet there are many that already have trimmed it down to be between Bell & Knight. Some already have Bell the starter & Knight #2 & they haven't even seen or heard about how they truly run the regular offense in this new competition battle. Most is based on 1 running a specialty package in games & the other on scout team plays read from a card that tells you exactly what to do without fear of being hit. blank

  • For the record & before Mule get's on here & think that I am bashing TK. I happen to like him & his abilities, actually like him more so than BB. However, I understand why BB gets media hype cause he played in the game & is actually the #2, so naturally many would just make the logical assumption that he will be #1. TK however good is gonna be just hasn't earned in my opinion all the major hype that he is given by media. Not just yet, it's ok to be excited about what he might bring, but to go as far as they have this soon when you have another QB that is capable of bringing the same skill sets & has been here longer & done at least something during a spring game & practice running the regular offense & quite honestly the same when he ran the scout team but no love, Well I beginning to see why a lot of minorities are questioning things. But as some say, this is a red state & the reality still remains that the minority QB will always have to prove he is a Qb while others are given that. So I am not doubting TK or bashing him, just the people that have hype him up & their reason for it. Sorry, just my opinion on the matter. If it bothers anyone, then just fly right by it & ignore.

In a National Championship game against OU, Tebow threw the ball near perfectly for the win. How is asking that Bell copy Tebow an insult?

Under Stoops, it seems the older more experienced QB always gets the benefit of the doubt. I thought for sure Jason White outplayed Nate Hybl in the August scrimmages yet Hybl got the start.

When it comes to live practice, if Bell doesn't just totally fail to drive the team then I think he gets first shot. However, if Thompson plays flawless and Bell opens the door, then I think Heupel won't hesitate to give him the opportunity.

I don't feel Knight really takes the job with far less experience running this offense unless he is just really too good to keep off the field. If TK shows growing pains and some freshman mistakes then I think he gets fewer reps as a #3 at least this year.

  • I feel really good about the offense next year. I know we will be breaking in a new QB but the weapons he has around him & the line he has to protect him lead me to think we should be able to move the ball. I think that Bell has an advantage but it wouldn't suprise me if one of the other QB's came from the pack and won the job. I think the longer we can move the ball and eat clock it will help us with a defense that is going to be vulnerable.

  • Honest question - can Josh develop a game plan and call plays, in the heat of the fray, for an offense heavily using the QB run game? He often struggled calling plays last season quickly enough in an offense he has a decade of experience with.....

BigL, I think that is a great question. I believe that this year is when we learn if the problem has been with Josh or with what Josh felt he had to work around. Every QB has strengths and areas where they are not so strong. And I don't know where the problem is located. But, If we have the identical issues with "in the fray" calls, with a new QB, then it may be a simple process of elimination on where the problem resides.

  • Bell's strength is his arm. That's why we recruited him. It's a bonus that he is athletic and has the ability to tun.

I missed that. I did hear Josh say that we weren't adding a QB run game. I will stick my neck out and say that I bet we have no more "called QB' run plays next year than we did last year. I think it will be a plus that our QB will have a greater ability to scramble when nothing is there, but that is not a QB run game.
