"...Home of the Brave!"

  • The home opener is in less than two weeks and it's time for the annual controversy regarding "...home of the brave." vs "...home of the Sooners." In the past I was kind of partial to Sooners yet this year will be different. Oklahoma's 45th Division is in Afghanistan and taking heavy loses. (And every loss is HEAVY to those who loved them!) This year, in honor and memory of those Oklahomans in Afghanistan, Iran, and other hot spots, I will go with ..."Land of the Free, Home of the Brave!"
Please reconsider for this year if you have previously championed "...Sooners."

  • No, it is absolutely NOT time for this annual controversy. I say "brave" but it's clear that we're not going to change anyone's mind. This horse is beyond dead. It has already made its way to the glue factory. Let it go...PLEASE!

  • Since it is our national anthem, I will continue to say brave, then yell Sooners as loud as I can.

  • My nephew is in the 45th. I will be saying home of the Sooners, just as he would.

Okay, then as Rosanne Rosanna Danna would say, "never mind".

  • Guys we have lost a lot of young men and women in the past several weeks who are fighting to give us the right to attend the event of our choice. I have been one of those who have said " home of the Sooners" also the brave but since so many have give so much I will from here on out sing "home of the brave" then I might add Sooners

To all of you who defend or have been a part of our military. Thank You

  • I am not fortunate enough to be in Norman for most of these games, however I have worn the uniform when fatigues were solid green (damn old olive green) and I would say "Sooners" without questioning anyone's love for or dedication to this country.

They are fighting/have fought to ensure that all Americans have the freedom to say whatever they want to say. You could argue that changing the words to the anthem is more patriotic.

They do this other places as well. I have no problem with it. Get upset about our National debt being 70% of our budgets, but not this!

  • Isn't it about time for the clothing and morality police to lay out acceptable dress for the home games, too? They should take this campaign to the print media and Kenny Mossman, since they're so anxious to regulate fan behavior.

Any word on plaid cargo shorts for this year? I'm sure Joe Castiglione will want to take a second to weigh in on these critical issues, if he can pry himself away from the next groundbreaking plan to sell stuff to Sooner fans.

  • I say "brave" - but I have zero problem with someone yelling "Sooners". I once had a U.S Army Sergeant who served two tours as a part of KFOR and tours in Afganistan and Iraq that he had no problem with it. So it really doesn't bother me, either. However, because I know it does bother some people - I just say brave myself. And actually, I usually just stand with my hand on my heart and stay silent while I reflect on the anthem and how glad I am I can watch football in a land that is still free.

Also, yep, it doesn't matter how hard we beat on that poor dead horse - it's not going to get up and be of any use . . .

  • One my best friends did two tours in Iraq and he says home of the "Sooners" so I'll stay with home of the Sooners as well.

  • I will continue to go with Home of the Brave "Sooners"!

  • At all other venues, I sing "Brave." In Memorial Stadium I sing "SOONERS!"
I was one of those who prevented Russia from World Domination on the East-West German Border in the early 70s.

(Just kidding about the world domination thing. It's my excuse for not being in Southeast Asia where the heroes served.)

I don't know about Emely Latella...never heard of her...
Yet it was Roseann Rosanna Dana that said 'Never mind'!!!

    No doubt here about that.

  • You're really bringing this up again? Let's just have another Kevin Wilson thread.

I'll honor my friends' memories by never forgetting them, not by words at the end of a song.

  • I vote for Roseanne Rosanna Danna and "...brave. GO SOONERS!"

  • The debate may rage on about "Brave" vs "Sooners" - but GX is right. Emily Litella said "Never Mind" on SNL. Gilda Radner played both characters - but Emily Litella was the elderly lady she played that was deaf and couldn't hear certain key words right when it came to her commentaries on current events. For example, "What's all this fuss about 'violins' on television . . . " When the SNL news anchor would correct her - she would utter, "Oh, Never mind . . ."

Watching SNL in the 70s as a kid was awesome . . . still the best group of "Not Ready for Prime Time" players . . .
