Forced touching?? on kick return (OSU TX)

  • Anyone see the whorns get this gift from the officials.

He was blocking an OSU defender and kicked the ball that had been punted to Texas. Normally OSU recovers and gets it. Not this time...Forced touching...BS. He no more was forced into that ball than I was.

  • Next kick OSU backed into ball...TX recovers..TX ball. LOL

  • You can't push or block a player into the ball and that's what they ruled:

"ARTICLE 4. a. A player blocked by an opponent into a free kick is not, while inbounds, deemed to have touched the kick."

And that was the correct call also, since he backed into it himself and was not blocked into it. A quick check of the rulebook may help you out.

  • I know what they ruled but he was not blocked into the ball. He was engaged in a block and slid into a ball he didn't see. A least that is what I saw. The rule is there to prevent a player from blocking/pushing a player into the ball. I did not see that happen.

Agreed. When I saw it live, I thought he was blocked into it. But, after watching the replays ... although OSU was engaging the cow and trying to push the cow backwards, the ball was to the side of the cow ... and the cow's leg went directly sideways to hit the ball (not backwards like he was being pushed into the ball).

The "into the ball" is where I think they missed it.

He was being blocked ... which is why I initially expected the call to be correct.

I'd actually like to see it again, to be sure. But, from the last replay I saw, it appeared to me that the ball was 90 degrees off of the path of the block. If that is true, then he was not blocked "into" the ball ... in fact, given more force, the path of the block would have caused him to miss the ball (if not for the sideways leg action)

The horn and #39 were engaged in a block that started 5 yards from the ball, and the horn had his back to the ball. Heads up by #39 in that he even sees the ball and gives the horn a shove into it. By the book. Maybe that's why it wasn't overruled????

Agree that this call was correct. The OSU player was not blocked into it. He just backed-up and then stood there while the ball bounced into him.

  • I agree with Boomer69, both calls were correct.

  • I went back and looked at it again (about 2:33 left in the 1st quarter) and have changed my mind. I stand corrected and agree with Boomer69 and ImaSoonergal.

The cow did step sideways to kick it. However, the OSU player had outside leverage, trying to push the cow sideways (not a straight-on block). Thus, the OSU player was pushing the player toward (into) the ball.

  • The refs have been favoring Texas the entire half. The osu re's incomplete catch. Not measuring on 4 & inches. To name a couple. I agree the forced touching call was doodoo.
