First of three by Mark and Canyoneer

  • If you look at OU's recent QB recruits ( Bell, Thompson and Knight) it appears changes are coming to the offense as all three of these young men can run the ball.

I am going to communicate my conversation with Canyoneer and a fellow, coach about the game yesterday. with Baylor. Dad was at the Oregon game and loved it..Very, very antagonistic crowd there..since he was rooting for the boys of troy (which he hasn't done more than twice if I remember correctly)...dad watched a taped version of the OU game at sis's house this morning and we talked a little on my break...and I will put his observations in three write-ups because I am under time constraints..and al;though fast on the keyboard I will probably make syntax and grammar errors (and get a call from him for those..he has high standards).

Canyoneers and Pauls observations..Paul is another former coach

    1) The game of football is changing and it is always changing. There were periods of time when the I formation was the way to go, the wishbone, the Veer, and now the spread offense. The future (from dad's view) is for those who see that see and recruit to run a power game, and play darn good defense.

Dad is concerned that OU is trying to win with a modified Leach offense, and he thinks that is good for 8-10 wins year, but not for a serious MNC contender. OU MUST get the OL who can run block, and get away from what is considered by him and others as a gimmicky offense. I guess dad loves the apparent ideas of the former Bob Hayes (I think that name is right, former OSU coach) who stated "only three things can happen with a pass, and two of them are bad". The only way you win with "fast break" football is to outscore the other team if you" ARE PUTTING YOUR BEST ATHLETES ON OFFENSE AND NOT DEFENSE" (Canyoneers quote).....He is also concerned that, although Mack Brown isn't a very good technical coach, he has made a smart move in focusing on their running game (and he knows that is also happening because Ash and little McCoy are not good passers at this pint) and what that does is create a more aggressive team that will be able in a year or so play good tough defense and also knock people on their butts with run blocking, You are good at what you practice..and what YOU PRACTICE AGAINST". With those big running backs, and Gray coming in for tejas, combined with a full year of run blocking they could be very tough next year..even with Mackie.

Ou has 5-7 more recruits to get for this year...and he thinks that they had better focus on Bowman, Mario, Flynn and other defensive athletes. He is also sure they will end up with more kids leaving, so there may be more. he feels that OU has had great success in recruiting great skilled athletes..and they have plenty on the offensive side, but they are NO WHERE near that level on defense. he is VERY concerned about the safety play of OU, the mental errors, and the physical limitations are real. There are no real studs on the D line as well...

He thinks OU must be very focused and objective abut where their team really is now. And he feels that although DGB is great, and no one would NOTwant him, the real focus for OU should be on their defensive issues, and lack of good play at OT especially..therefor, getting Banner, Mario, Bowman and Flynn should be priories as well as TE..

Next year OU is going to be l good again, but if they are to take it to the next level they need to 1) stop the breakdowns in the deep secondary 2) Create more push in the interior DL 3) improve their LB pass coverage 4) and on offense RUN BLOCK so that the very talented Whaley and the incoming Ross can WEAR OUT THE OPPOSITION AND DOMINATE THE CLOCK....all important winning strategies in winning football games.

One last thing I never considered but Canyoneer has a lot, is that by running up and down the field on offense you CANNOT MANAGE THE CLOCK...and if that QB and the other team has great Offensive talent they can stay in the game with you,,,in fast break football if you run into the best QB in the US (and dad thinks Griffin is and should win the Heisman) you can and might lose to a far inferior team..

More in a day or so..I have an 16 hour day coming in the ER..

PS-I thought a great quote from Dad is that he felt that "these spread offenses look like intramural touch football, and when you play that you get great finesse, but you don;t learn how to attack. On defense you just are running around chasing people, but you don't use the mains components of football.....power, physical dominance and violence. And football is, a violent and brutal sport. Back-pedaling for OL teaches them to be wimps.. And OU has become a finesse football team.." Next year run Whaley and Ross (if he is ready) 45 times a game..

Not to toot my own horn, but this is exactly what I said. We didnt run the ball with power at all against Baylor outside the redzone with Bell. Our offense looks like Texas Tech. We talked about being physical all off-season and then we dont do it during the season. We did against FSU early, but really havent done it since. Like it or not fellas, but Wilson is a much better OC than Huepul. Perhaps Huepul needs more time, but IMO, Wilson would have won that game against Baylor because he would have ran the ball with power.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

  • This is what I posted after the game. Ok, my horn is being put down now.

Well, there is a bit of consistency when it comes to BV this year. I dont know if its his schemes or the players. Every team that spreads us out and throws the ball has given us trouble on the back end. Mizzou came out with 4 and 5 wide and had us down early. Tech did the same and then tonight, Baylor did the same. BV has to figure this out and figure it out soon. If I was IAst and osu, I would run 4 and 5 wide all game long and target Harris, just like Baylor did tonight.

That being said, Huepul needs to pull his head out too. We didnt run downhill at Baylor all night outside the redzone. That puts amazing pressure on the passing game. We were in the gun almost exclusively and didnt give our OL enough chances to be physical. We lose a player like Broyles and he still wants to throw it around like that. When we did run, it was finese plays from the pistol and gun. Millard can run from the I back, so why dont they do it? If we had established a ground game early, we would have won this game.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

  • I agree 100%

I also want to point out that this is exactly what many people have been getting ridiculed for bringing up in the last few years.

  • I agree hat Heupel's commitment to the run game is only token. Finch is very good. He's in the class of Q Griffin who helped JH out a great deal in route to a NC. However, we do not open a game and press a run game. That would have been a good recipe for Baylor and keeping Griffin off the field.

I don't buy that our RBs aren't good enough. Whaley was very good if not special. Finch has done nothing but produce. Clay has not been healthy enough to know how good he is but he's serviceable. Williams is explosive, and of course Millard is waiting still his opportunity.

So far, it's not in Heupel's DNA to force the defense to shut down the run. As good as our passing game is, it should be as a result of fear that the run game can get it done if needed.

I also don't buy that Patton is the problem. We've had holes and we've had success, but you have to keep plugging away and wear on a defense. We don't wear on anyone.

  • I have been saying this to friends for a year OU needs more big time players on defense! I will have to disagree on one thing.. when dad said no real playmakers on defense. Frank Alexander is a big playmaker. He is consistent, dominate and is an NFL type player. Outside of him everyone else is questionable.

Look at what Saban does at Bama or LSU.. Great Defenses.. power running game, and if you get lucky like he did in 09 with WR Jones and a QB to get him the ball you win the NC. Its a copycat league lets copy a wining coach.

I'm hell when I'm well.. And, I am never sick!

  • you people that think texas is going SEC style are killing me. They are protecting bad QBs, that's it. They are still recruiting the same kids we are. They did not hire Boise OC to run Bama offense!!!!!!!!!!!!! When they get the QB, they will run that offense. They are not that smart, quit making them sound that way.

  • One important aspect this defense isn't doing is batting down passes. In our first few games I saw a commiment to it and it was impressive. Our DLs have to look for it and get their hands up. Against these spreads, it's a key cog in defending the screens and slants. We've got to get back to doing it like we opened the season.
