I am going to communicate my conversation with Canyoneer and a fellow, coach about the game yesterday. with Baylor. Dad was at the Oregon game and loved it..Very, very antagonistic crowd there..since he was rooting for the boys of troy (which he hasn't done more than twice if I remember correctly)...dad watched a taped version of the OU game at sis's house this morning and we talked a little on my break...and I will put his observations in three write-ups because I am under time constraints..and al;though fast on the keyboard I will probably make syntax and grammar errors (and get a call from him for those..he has high standards).
Canyoneers and Pauls observations..Paul is another former coach
1) The game of football is changing and it is always changing. There were periods of time when the I formation was the way to go, the wishbone, the Veer, and now the spread offense. The future (from dad's view) is for those who see that see and recruit to run a power game, and play darn good defense.
Dad is concerned that OU is trying to win with a modified Leach offense, and he thinks that is good for 8-10 wins year, but not for a serious MNC contender. OU MUST get the OL who can run block, and get away from what is considered by him and others as a gimmicky offense. I guess dad loves the apparent ideas of the former Bob Hayes (I think that name is right, former OSU coach) who stated "only three things can happen with a pass, and two of them are bad". The only way you win with "fast break" football is to outscore the other team if you" ARE PUTTING YOUR BEST ATHLETES ON OFFENSE AND NOT DEFENSE" (Canyoneers quote).....He is also concerned that, although Mack Brown isn't a very good technical coach, he has made a smart move in focusing on their running game (and he knows that is also happening because Ash and little McCoy are not good passers at this pint) and what that does is create a more aggressive team that will be able in a year or so play good tough defense and also knock people on their butts with run blocking, You are good at what you practice..and what YOU PRACTICE AGAINST". With those big running backs, and Gray coming in for tejas, combined with a full year of run blocking they could be very tough next year..even with Mackie.
Ou has 5-7 more recruits to get for this year...and he thinks that they had better focus on Bowman, Mario, Flynn and other defensive athletes. He is also sure they will end up with more kids leaving, so there may be more. he feels that OU has had great success in recruiting great skilled athletes..and they have plenty on the offensive side, but they are NO WHERE near that level on defense. he is VERY concerned about the safety play of OU, the mental errors, and the physical limitations are real. There are no real studs on the D line as well...
He thinks OU must be very focused and objective abut where their team really is now. And he feels that although DGB is great, and no one would NOTwant him, the real focus for OU should be on their defensive issues, and lack of good play at OT especially..therefor, getting Banner, Mario, Bowman and Flynn should be priories as well as TE..
Next year OU is going to be l good again, but if they are to take it to the next level they need to 1) stop the breakdowns in the deep secondary 2) Create more push in the interior DL 3) improve their LB pass coverage 4) and on offense RUN BLOCK so that the very talented Whaley and the incoming Ross can WEAR OUT THE OPPOSITION AND DOMINATE THE CLOCK....all important winning strategies in winning football games.
One last thing I never considered but Canyoneer has a lot, is that by running up and down the field on offense you CANNOT MANAGE THE CLOCK...and if that QB and the other team has great Offensive talent they can stay in the game with you,,,in fast break football if you run into the best QB in the US (and dad thinks Griffin is and should win the Heisman) you can and might lose to a far inferior team..
More in a day or so..I have an 16 hour day coming in the ER..
PS-I thought a great quote from Dad is that he felt that "these spread offenses look like intramural touch football, and when you play that you get great finesse, but you don;t learn how to attack. On defense you just are running around chasing people, but you don't use the mains components of football.....power, physical dominance and violence. And football is, a violent and brutal sport. Back-pedaling for OL teaches them to be wimps.. And OU has become a finesse football team.." Next year run Whaley and Ross (if he is ready) 45 times a game..
Still Boomer, Sooner Mark
