  • This story is the most ridiculous thing I've heard of in a long while. While "Chink" is a slang word for "Chinaman" it is also a common word in the English language:

    chink1    /tʃɪŋk/ Show Spelled[chingk] Show IPA
    noun
    1. a crack, cleft, or fissure: a chink in a wall.
    2. a narrow opening: a chink between two buildings.

It was PERFECT usage of the word and very descriptive. NOT only this, the phrase is a popular colloquialism, also used in perfect context. This is a perfect example of how Political correctness and over-sensitivity has gotten out of hand. And now they are going to investigate and look for punitive action... next step... Thought Police.

Really??? You are over-reacting. While I find it kind of amusing, if you can't see that people will automatically see double meaning in the headline then I don't know what to say. It is completely obvious that in this particular case that the use of the word Chink should have raised red flags and another headline used. Just because it has several usages doesn't mean that it is appropriate.

This. It's comedy that it even made it through espn's system. Sloppy, and really stupid.

    .

A double entendre (French pronunciation: [dublɑ̃tɑ̃dʁə]) is a figure of speech in which a spoken phrase is devised to be understood in either of two ways. Often the first (more obvious) meaning is straightforward, while the second meaning is less so: often risqué or ironic.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines a double entendre as especially being used to "convey an indelicate meaning". It is often used to express potentially offensive opinions without the risks of explicitly doing so.

Yes by definition, but to use it when referencing an Asian, which IS A RACIAL SLUR is not ok. To disconnect the two is stupid, so lets stop playing dumb. ESPN has high-paid writers and copywriters who proof their material so letting this slip is pure stupid

  • We have just seen several racist posters--you and we know who you are. Anyone who had no objection to the insult needs to just admit their racial insensitivity and start campaigning for those two dolts who just got fired to be rehired since they, in your opinion, did nothing wrong. Put on your pointy little head sheets and grab the matches.

Lovely, just lovely, again, a perfect example of free speech only being free speech if you agree, if you do not agree it then magically becomes hate speech, thereby putting "someone" somewhere in charge of being in our heads and knowing what we are thinking. Apparently you feel qualified for this position, so when we finally finish this political correctness deathspiral and end up in a position where we do have the "thought police" you should feel intrinsically qualified to apply...

The problem with your "double entendre" idea is that in its very definition (and using the idea of double entendre to enforce politically correct positions) requires that you make an assumption of the author's original intent, and therein lies the problem. In a country that values free speech, this extra step of assumption is dangerous. There are not many racial slurs that are so perfectly innocent when used in other contexts, I stand by what I said earlier, this was perfectly used both the word AND the phrase. Firing the guy for this is unfortunate and severe.

While I agree that the ESPN headline was in poor taste and inappropriate , I find it even more disturbing that you label as a 'racist' anyone who disagrees with you and recognizes that political correctness has become a tool of the true intolerant.

Only the truly intolerant and bigoted would choose to infer a racist intent from the use of a clearly accurate, if unfortunate, use of the word chink.

And only a narrow minded idealogue with no common sense or real connection to reality would jump to the same conclusions as you have.

  • Wow! Let's hope you're perfect. Just an observation, but I have usually found the one screaming "racist" or "intolerant" the loudest is usually the one most racist and intolerant. And they usually have a political agenda to support. You know who you are........lol
